Again, I'm lukewarm on signing Monta, but where is all of this horrible/bad/inept defense banter coming from? He's not that bad defensively, and probably better against PG's than SG's if that's where the Kings want to play him. Also, Malone will probably run some 1-2-2 zone (like he built at GS) and Monta would actually play well in that zone. He gambles quite a bit, but he also tips a lot of passes and disrupts. I think Malone would also light a fire under his MontAss.
Yeah, Ellis is actually a pretty aggressive defender when he wants to be. He also holds his ground against significantly bigger SGs surprisingly well. My issue is (and always has been) his highly inefficient offensive game.
But just in terms of roster fit, if Monta is signed it would give the Kings the following guards:
Monta Ellis, Greivis Vasquez, Isaiah Thomas, Ben McLemore, Ray McCallum, Marcus Thornton, Jimmer Fredette and even John Salmons if he's pressed into action as a SG.
Now clearly either Salmons or Thornton needs to be moved (or in Salmon's case amnestied) but that would still leave 6 or 7 guards on the roster fighting for two spots. More importantly only Vasquez and Thomas are really PGs with the others all being combos or exclusively shooting guards.
McCallum may not make the team but the others are under contract and Thomas, Greivis, Salmons and Fredette are all ending contracts. If PDA is really pushing hard for Ellis then other moves must be in the works.
At the very least Thomas would need to be dealt. He's a cheap and productive asset at the moment and he'd likely lose nearly all his playing time which would lower his trade value.
We'll see.
