Tropical Island Video Vault Draft - ROUND 20 - FINAL ROUND

I AM STILL NOBONUS!

For a second pick he will take some high comedy. Perhaps the most rewatchable film selected so far, and a cult classic filled with such witty dialogue as:
"Who'se he?"
"I don't know, he must be a king."
"Why?"
"Because he hasn't got s*#@ all over him."

And perhaps the best line to use when describing your significant other:
"What's wrong with her? She's beautiful, she's rich, she's got huge...tracks of land"

NoBonus selects:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

To be expected that a lot of these movies are going to go quickly, but it still pains me to see them taken.........I want them all for myself! ;)

Had a different number one planned, here, but after the advice that I could probably wait a few rounds to nab it I have moved it down to pick #2. Instead, my first pick is one that was somewhat shockingly absent from the last draft (slipped my mind until the very end, and presumably everyone else's as well):

GATTACA (1997) -- How I managed to forget it, I still haven't figured out. My list of favorite movies is forever changing after the number five spot, but this one is probably pretty safely in my personal top ten. Beautifully written, acted, and directed. And absolutely gorgeous to look at (for the record, icky genetics aside, I would happily live in a not too distant future in which the architecture was by Frank Lloyd Wright and the electric cars all looked like 1960s Citroens). This is one of those movies that I instantly loved, but somehow still manage to appreciate more and more with each viewing. Further, it is my go-to example of how good science fiction CAN be, despite a total lack of both robots and aliens.
Nice pick with Gattaca. One of my favorite sci fi films. Really underrated.

I won't argue with any of those, though I am not a Cameron fan at all. For me it probably comes down to the fact that I strongly prefer the first movie that overshadows the stronger elements of the film.
I prefer the action elements to the straight suspense. I want people taking charge, not moping around in shadows all the time. Just a personal preference.

And now for that delayed first pick:

Bronson (2008) -- If I'm being honest, this is not a great movie. It's good, interesting maybe a better word, and stands up to repeat viewing, but it's a little on the pretentious side at time and its affectations can be a bit distracting. That said, Tom Hardy's performance as British criminal Charles Bronson (born Michael Peterson) is easily one of the most exciting pieces of acting I've seen in years. Special, special stuff that I will happily watch over and over, despite the film's flaws.

Are you ever right: flawed movie, sure and no where near making my own list, but Hardy is an absolute freak of nature and there are several scenes that simply haunt.

Particularly this "high school dance party" in the psych ward. Insanity incarnate and you can actually feel Bronson's psyche crumbling even through his drugged up stupor.

Re: the rule suggestion, I did not have a game changing movie in mind, I just was looking back at the last draft when there was a lot of buzz about one movie released mid draft and also noticed the person who picked appeared to pick it on the Australian release date after timing out of the draft. Well played, but do we really want the possibility of someone delaying the draft 24 hours or more just so they can pick on release day? Thought I'd throw it out now before anyone got any wise ideas. That is all :)

I think that incident was an isolated occurance from a kooky opportunist who thought he was mimicking Red Aeurbach drafting Larry Bird a year early.

I'm certain because of that silly premptive pick, he went into a movie he'd been excited about for months and really hoping to like, suddenly "having" to like it. That's some weird and unnecessary pressure heading into a summer blockbuster. So, karma has a way of balancing things.

No need to alter or re-write the rules.

*And to be fair, I timed-out due to legitmate reasons (I was stuck on an ambulance at the time) and not because I was stalling. As soon as I got home and received the commish's blessing I took it.

All well and good I was just making a suggestion to cut off what I saw as potential for abuse while we still could, and again it is more about insuring that someone doesn't intentionally stall one pick to try and time the snake on the way back. Personally I have no intention of drafting anything that hasn't had some chance to age on the shelf a little.

Well, the Matrix pick is actually a relief as it removes some guilt. My 2nd and 3rd round picks from last time (Holy Grail) have now both been taken, as obviously everyobdy was swayed to their greatness by my selecting them last time. Accordingly without that one sitting out there, and while I hate to be repetitive, I think I am going to go ahead and burn one of my "rule of 5" picks on my #1 pick last time:

The Last of the Mohicans (1992)

Some movies don't stand the test of time. In fact I think most really. This one is one of the ones that does, and if anything may be more highly thought of now than then. Still as gorgeous to look at, and listen to with one of the best soundtracks of all time, as when it first came out and starring one of the best actors of his or any generation. Period piece, war movie, a guy's romance (the type where you prove your love by driving a tomahawk through another guy's head), its passionate and gorgeous and eternally rewatchable. Its got several of my favorite movie scenes of all time in it, including a finale that if it doesn't get your blood pounding, you're dead.

I've never actually seen that movie and now that you've picked it twice I am a little curious, which is a shame as I understand the Blu-Ray and maybe even the DVD are unwatchable in the dark scenes. Maybe next year it will get some kind of 20th year deluxe remaster.

One good thing is that apparently the new director's cut substantially restores most of what the first one screwed up. Have not seen it, just seen it reviewed. Be nice to have the real movie, or something close, out there again instead of some bastardized version chopped up by its own director.

Always a headscratcher when the director's cut messes up the flow or just outright ruins the theatrical, which seems to apply at least half the time.

This is turning to be a very unpredictable (hence interesting) draft... Possible the "Rule of 5" and the self claimed restrictions make it as challenging (for participants) and surprising (for observers) as it is.

I am surprised it was not a first round pick. Especially as some might argue that Inception is a spin-off of only one of the many philosophical arguments that this movie presents (i.e. "The Dream World").

I AM NOBONUS!

Star Wars (1977)
I think it is safe to say that if everyone are eligible for voting - you just secured one vote. And I hope everyone knows who is the true star in this movie...:D

The Princess Bride (1987)
As you wish!

I love this movie!

It would be my first pick if I had joined this draft. Nice one Brick.

The Hangover - 2009

So, this is a bit of a 180 :) (And no Brick you didn't influence this, ya jerk)

I avoided this one for the better part of a year thinking it just another raunchy, mindless frat boy vehicle (in the spirit of Broken Lizard and the Farrelly Brothers) with the usual cache of gross out jokes and not so subtle innuendo.

And it is. Plus, fairly clever, imaginative and funny in its absurdity. I also love the group dynamic and their varying, flat out starkly different personalities. It's a three man odd couple stranded in the most ridiculous situation.

The movie also works as a farcical mystery, prompting you join the guys in slowly putting together the seemingly random jigsaw pieces of the night before. How the gang ultimately solves the problem of finding Doug really is a duex ex machina, but whatever. Shut up and eat your popcorn.

What it boils down to, whenever I think of The Hangover, I can't help but giggle. So it'll be a nice chaser after Ran.

I love, love, loved the Hangover when I first saw it (rare movie I actually saw in the theaters). Completely caught off guard. But I have to be honest that it hasn't quite held up to repeat viewings as much as I thought it would. That said, its a very solid choice for a flick that wasn't out the last time the draft was done.

Yep, I believe it was Slim who brought us this gift in the form of the album draft that he saw on another board. The other drafts soon followed though when all is said and done I believe the album and movie are the best of the bunch.

I've enjoyed all of the drafts I've participated in, but would generally agree. Also have a bit of a soft spot for the car draft.

I liked the car draft but the fantasy cars (which I had planned on going in) kind of ruined it for me as it started to dominate the draft.

I hope we do women and album draft. One suggestion i have though. Have you guys ever thought about trying to prearrange it so that all the people drafting agree to be online at a certain time? That would save a lot of time by not having to wait for the next drafter to show up.

I was okay with that, though for purely selfish reasons. Don't remember how my entire list worked out (am somewhat nerdily re-reading the thread at the moment), but I seem to recall not having to dip too far into my alternates thanks to the late obsession with fantasy land. Also can't get too worked up about it, since it was likely my (awesome) second round Tumbler pick that started the trend.
