Don't Make Me Use The Bat

Autumn in the Northeast

Obviously inspired by another drafter's recent pick, but while I like winter, and it is my second favorite season, nothing beats Fall. And to get more specific, I went with Autumn in the Northeast, to distinguish it from those sickening displays down in SoCal or the tropics. If its 80+ degrees on Halloween -- move the hell out of there and leave it to those Flroida kooks. So anyway, while I said the Northeast to be specific, really anyplace where Fall is Fall -- where the leaves change, there is a nip in the air, a crisp little breeze in the mornings, the rains pick up, and you might even get a light snow once or twice. Someplace where you break out the jackets and blankets, step out the front door, and take a deep breath to drink it all in. And best of all for all you younguns -- school! :D

P.S. I went with a pic of my old school's famous Locust Walk in the fall, but if you prefer something more rural/parky:

Bozzwell has timed out, atxrocker has gotten far enough behind that one of his make-up picks has been forfeited (and one will continue to be forfeited each round until he either makes them up or officially drops out), and SacKings7 is up. PMs being sent to all.

I know I'm up, still deliberating a bit and may not be back until after 5 Pacific.

Just a friendly heads up :)

Ok... I pick Nurses.

I honestly didn't know a thing about nursing before I wound up in nursing education. In the past year and a half since not only do I interact with them daily I've had my first child and had my first major injury and grown to appreciate them in all aspects of the medical profession. They are probably the least appreciate members of the medical community but in many ways the most critical, especially since family practice and primary care has fallen out of favor with so many doctors. Somebody's gotta hook up my morphine drip when I'm old, so here is my tribute.

And while its totally bad form to propagate the sexy nurse stereotype, on Fantasy Island they will all be of this variety.

CALIFORNIA'S NORTH COAST

I love the entire north coast of California...and Oregon for that matter. Love the rocks, the rugged landscape, the tough surf, the great tide-pools, and the tiny unspoiled communities that line highway 1 above San Francisco. The picture above is from Irish Beach, about 25 miles south of Mendocino. My grandparents have a cabin out there and I can't get enough of the place...very peaceful. It's also my summer getaway...it can be 110 degrees in the valley but only in the 50's over there. I love that!

I just retook my first overall pick from the babes draft (and darn glad to have) so now I think I'll right a wrong that haunted me from the car draft and take what probable should have been my first pick there. My next pick is ...

The Delorean

And to be clear, this isn't "A Delorean". It's "THE Delorean". As in "88 mph, 1.21 gigawatts to the flux capacitor, where we're going we don't need roads" Delorean.

Back to the Future was my first ever favorite movie and retained that title well into my preteen years almost exclusively because of the utter awesomness for the time traveling, flying alternative sports car. I cared nothing for cars and still really don't to this day, but I still dreamed of flying off to another epoch at 88 mph in my gull winged silver beast.

And as Doc famously said, "if you're going to travel through time, why not do it with some style?"

I already picked time travel and even used "THE Delorean" in my selection.

I say this is just a Delorean.

I don't want a Delorean. If that is the case I don't want the pick.

... and no you didn't. You picked the broad choice of "Time Travel" and used a movie poster of Back to the Future, consisting of Marty and a blurry photo of the Delorean's front left tire (which makes sense considering it's pretty hard to illustrate time travel with a picture otherwise).

I honestly see this in the same regard as you picking a band and me picking a hit single from that band.

To be fair, I picked California and the very next round California's Northern Coast was taken and I'm perfectly fine with that. To me, that's well within the spirit of the draft you designed allowing as much freedom and imagination as possible as long as we don't utterly duplicate another choice.

And considering how all encompasing the first several selections of the draft were, I've gotten overlap for every single one despite my committment to being rather specific (Summer Vacation & Christmas/Holidays, Surfing/Outdoor Sports, Calvin and Hobbes/Books, Marisa Miller/Every Selection from the Babes Draft). It honestly surprises me that my first objection came from you.

Picking "Time Travel" and then in effect picking a time machine which happens to be the same time machine I used in the picture for my pick directly encroaches on my pick. I don't really see it the same as picking a single from a band. I think the fact that it is a fantasy pick is an important distinction from the other examples you cited. Also since its been 10 rounds or so someone else may have skipped the Delorean thinking it was off the table since I used the picture in my pick. So all I'm asking for is a second and a ruling.

The moment of first attraction

You the know the time when you see that girl across the room and you heart literally skips a beat. That feeling when you have that first kiss.

Right a wrong? Hrm... I thought that part of the draft worked out exactly as it should have.

"Time travel" is a broad term. It's like "flying".

I think G3 defined the parameters on this pretty well in the OP:

Person A can draft a band and have their entire catalog, and Person B would still be able to draft an individual album or song by that band; Person A can draft a video game console and have all of its games, and Person B would still be able to draft a specific game or franchise; Person A can draft a restaurant, and Person B can still draft a specific menu item...

If someone chose "flying" and then posted a picture of "The Spirit of St. Louis," it would not mean the plane itself was off the board. So, AFAIC, if you choose "time travel" the picture you use to illustrate your selection of the term is just definitive in nature and not restrictive, especially since you made no mention of it at all in your post.

And that's fine, I just wanted a ruling. IMHO a lot of this draft is self policing the lack of rules and some people have been really cheeseball about this and this pick was more borderline since there is a distinction. But I did pick "Time Travel" specifically because I didn't want to pick the DeLorean and have someone turn around and pick time travel which to me would be the only reason for picking such a hideous car :)

I personally like the filet mignon but usually I want a larger portion. Its like a tease... so having an unlimited supply is a good thing.

Aha, and thus you capture my dilemma. "A" Delorean represents to me an extremely dated stainless-steel, beastly yuppie-mobile with impractical doors that helped bankrupt a coke-fiend nut-job.

But "THE" Delorean is the quintessential fantasy "magic carpet ride" from my childhood that evolved into a character all it's own. If I saw a delorean today I'd think "someone's stuck in the 80s." But if I saw THE Delorean I'd probably wet myself and sob uncontrolably.

Didn't mean to encroach on your pick at all. Just nabbing something that still makes me smile today.

Next pick coming up.

This may seem like a copycat pick after the Heast Castle selection, but this particular castle holds some very special significance for me:

Schloss Neuschwanstein

I'll write more later, but I will say a water-color painting done by my grandmother as a 21st birthday gift hangs in my bedroom as a celebration of my heritage and I cherish it.

And no, I would not want to live there.

Thanks to VF21 for stepping in as arbiter on the Delorean thing, by the way. For a few reasons that are now irrelevant, I wanted nothing to do with that decision.

You're welcome, G3. :)

Löwenherz - Go to www.webshots.com and search under castles. You'll find two more pictures of your castle. I've got them as part of my rotating wallpaper. I think it's intriguing that someone here has a connection to the castle that looks like it stepped right out of a fairy tale.

:)
