Austrailia - I like the main actors and the scenery is beautiful, but the movie was just too long.

Australia I just got done turning this off midway -- it was AWFUL. Embarrassingly bad. A complete and utter rambling melodramatic mess. I have no idea what they were thinking. the basic story could have been told straight, with a complete rewrite, and perhaps made interesting. But they made an utter pseudo comedy/pseduo artsy/pseudy spirtually, badly edited, terribly acted complete mess out of it. Avoid at all costs. That sucked.

Let's put it this way -- this reveiw comes from someboyd who went in expecting something at the level of Far and Away, and came out extremely disappointed because it was nowhere near as good. Or good at all.

Been on a bad streak recently. Saw The Governess the night before, and it was wildly bad itslef. Anachronistic, unfocused, badly directed, featuring an erratic nonsencisla performance for Minnie Driver and erratic characterizatrions of the peope around her that made no sense whatsoever. And to top it off at the end its clear that the amateurish director, who also wrote the thing, has been constantly manipulating things because she thinks that her "heroine" (an alleged 19th century slutty virgin who lies around talking to her sister about wanting to taste semen (sorry)) is in the right, when all she has done since the beginning of the movie is lie, steal, seduce, and in the end destroy a family while neglecting her charge and fundamentally failing to fulfill her duties.

The night before that I tried an old Harrison Ford flick called Frantic, which I vaguely remembered from back in the day (just the name, never saw it). Was even directed by Roman Polanski. And yet was awful. Terrible performance by Ford, ridiculous narrative (the main character is an idiot who constantly does nonsensical things), no chemsitry whatsoever between any of the characters, and about the least "frantic" movie you could possibly make about this supposedly Frantic situation.

Its just been a week of suxors.

Robot Holocaust -- cool! after some recent bad luck in movie watching, I stumble across an absolute classic of its genre just sitting right there in the On Demand free movie section! For anybody jonesing for some killer robot action while they wait for Terminator Salvation to hit DVD, an absolute must see! :D

Not available at Blockbuster, unfortunately.

"sitting right there in the On Demand free movie section"

If you've got cable...
Nope - live in the country - no cable, DSL, sidewalks, corner delis, or other modern conveniences.... ;)

It's Dish Network, Blockbuster by mail, and fortunately we are close enough to town to be able to get wireless broadband instead of having to use dialup or satellite service. We have this, and it works great.

I watched Gran Torino last weekend. Classic Eastwood character, but he does play it well. I really enjoyed it. Well done.

I'm thinking of going to see Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, tonight. I really liked the original a lot, so its a risk.

Went and saw this with my Dad today. He really liked the original and this one as well - a rare occurrance for him. Other than dropping way more F-bombs than really necessary and the occasional plot hole, not bad at all. I liked it overall.

Good to hear that the movie was good because I will be seeing it right after work today.

Dad and I both guessed certain plot points before they were fully revealed, but that didn't diminish our enjoyment of the film. I think Travolta plays the part just a slight bit over the top, but he usually plays a pretty good bad guy and does not disappoint here either. Denzel is always good.

Taking Pelham 1 2 3. This was a good movie. John Travolta sure plays a good bad person and I have always liked Denzel Washington. Although, I could have done without all the F bombs, it was a pretty good action movie.

The Proposal was surprisingly decent, quite funny...straightfoward and slightly predictable, but still enjoyable. It's a great date-flick, and Betty White steals the show.

Transformers 2 yesterday evening.

Shows were sold out where I was. Movie is long, almost 2.5 hours, and I almost started feeling it towards the end. LOTS of action, a feeling like they felt like they had to add new characters (while removing some old ones - including adding a couple stupid characters ala Jar Jar, but not quite as bad), and the story felt kinda hobbled together a bit and a little hokey in parts, but we all pretty much enjoyed it overall. Optimus Prime is a bad mofo when you get down to it. :D Ending felt a little rushed (final battle) compared to all the fighting done previously.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. I saw this movie at the IMAX theater and man I really liked it. Lots of good action and the fights scenes were pretty awesome seeing it at the IMAX. Although, it was 2.5 hours, it didn't feel that long to me.

I didn't see it in IMAX, but same here. Great action scenes and of course amazing special effects. I didn't like some of the new characters though, and some of the dialogue wasn't necessary. The first one was better

I watched Hancock today, though I found it extremely predictable there were a few good laughs and I enjoyed it. Was a bit disappointed with the quality of the effects though.

One of the best lines in the movie came from those new characters though:

Skids: Ouch, that hurt!

Mudflap: It's an ***-whoopin', it's *supposed* to hurt!

For some reason that just cracked me up.

I also went and saw Transformers .. I heard some pretty bad things about it, but being a new Transformers fan I didnt really care about the stuff the die hards didnt like about the movie .. Special Effects were great, Some of the new characters were annoying ( 2 autobots and 1 human ) but overall I liked it. Gotta love Optimus.

This made me laugh for a good 3 minutes. My wife thought I was being stupid, but that was classic!

Other than that, seeing Devastator was cool. Movie gets only a C+ from me. looked like a giant GM advertisement.

Yesterday I re-viewed Starship Tropers.

That crazy mix of sci-fi fascist society, "Saved By The Bell"-like characters and the enough quantity of gore is incredibly crazy and genious. It's a masterpiece.

The Day the Earth Stood Still -- eh, okay I guess. But the combination of absolutely idiotic people in power (and the very strange decision to make the sum total of people in power in the entire world a single woman -- not even the President, but the Secretary of Defense?) and a standard Hollywood annoying kid you hope will die horribly were constant aggravations.

Slumdog Millionaire -- tad overrated, I think due to the subject matter, but a good flick and a window into a different world. Of course if I was Indian I might have mixed feelings about my entire country being portrayed more or less as one giantic garbage pile/slum.

Slackers -- not to be confused with Swingers, Hackers or Singles, and not to be watched under any circumstances. An alleged comedy, I lasted 18 minutes without a laugh. Long enough to see James King and Laura Prepon share a lesbian kiss in some geeks fantasy world however.

Hot Shots Part Deux -- following the complete failure of Slackers to scratch the comedy itch, back to a dependable oldie. Still pretty funny 15 years later. Certinaly better thna the juvenile trash which preceded it.

I actually have this sitting in my living room right now from NetFlix. It's been sitting there for about 2 weeks now, and I can't really get myself to watch it..

Save yourself the aggravation. The only thing at all interesting was the decision to cast Keanu Reeves as an emotionless alien here to warn the world to either change the world or be destroyed and he ruins the performance by actually showing emotion... Not well, mind you, but just enough to make Michael Rennie roll over iin his grave.

Do yourself a favor and find the original version somewhere. It's a much better film and the robot doesn't look like some escaped comic book monster.

Cool thanks for the advice.

A couple months ago I know they were selling both versions together at Target. I almost bought it but had never seen either, so I didn't. But I'll definitely go see the original now.
