Zone D

I got free luxury box seat tickets to the Warriors-Jazz game last night and I noticed that they were playing zone defense from the get-go. GS is a terrible defensive team and Nellie is not a defensive coach. With that said, they were quite effective using the zone d scheme against the 12-1 Jazz. Of course the Jazz were due to come back down to reality, and GS might have been playing beyond themselves, but I think zone d is something the Kings should add to their repetoir (sp?).

If we learn to play zone d then we will have more versatility on the defensive end. And it might help to lead to more fast breaks. Not to mention that it could help make up for some defeciencies. And with our personell we have guys with long armspans and quick feet.

I am not suggesting that we play zone d all the time, but it would be nice to change the pace every one and a while when we are getting destroyed 1v1 down low.

Any thoughts?

Well, we have played zone in stretches in several games already, so they CAN play it, but maybe more often depending on matchups?

Actually when we were getting detroyed by the Jazz in that run the other night, Jerry Reynolds mentioned that Muss should go to a zone defense to switch things up because of what the Jazz were doing to us. Muss never went there. I don't know why.

Hey, now. Lauding anything JR says isn't all that fashionable around here. Most folks think he's just a country bumpkin without anything helpful to contribute. ;)

A zone D works better against teams that like to drive the lane. And even outside shooting teams don't shoot 45%-50% every night. It also is a big disruption when used sometimes and not others. In a way it can work like bringing in a big defender in the middle. Kings should use it more especially as mentioned above when teams like the Jazz get on a run.

Zone D won't work against a patient team with good shooters.
Exactly. How many teams have patience, experience and good shooters ?
Not that much...

I think we should use the zone defense on a more regular basis

this is what i think we should do.

switch on all picks. easy way to keep players from getting to the rim

IMHO a zone defense can only work in stretches for the Kings, just like throwing a change-up for a few sets. But eventually the other team figures it out.

If we just looked at our starting guards, they would be FAR better in a zone D setting than a man D setting. Bibby gets more "protection" and Kevin would excel getting in the lanes to stifle things. Kevin would probably overtake Artest for the league lead in steals, at a minimum, under this scenario.

However, it is the front line that makes a consistent zone not doable for our team. And that is mostly brought about by the 3-second-in-the-lane defensive rule. Since our guy in the middle of the zone in the back cannot camp out in the lane, like he could if playing under NCAA rules, it places a premium on quickness back there, and it spills over into the forward spots too. The Kings' front line is just way too slow to effectively play a zone for long periods of time.

With that said, I like using it as a change-up every now and then, for a limited period, and that appears to be what Muss has done.
