You're going to like John Brockman

I think a lot of Kings fans are going to love this guy. Evans and Cassipi are getting a lot of deserved attention, but don't underestimate Brockman. He may actually turn out to be a great team leader. The kind of guy we need who sparks the team. We don't really have any motivational leaders on our team. I think Brockman will be one of those guys. Scott Pollard with a lot more fire and hustle.

Good comment from above seattletimes reader feedback

Height and jumping ability are not the only key characteristics of a great rebounder. Positioning, quickness, timing and heart are perhaps even more important.

Although he was listed at 6'8" to 6'10", Dennis Rodman was really 6 feet *6 1/2* inches tall. So a guy shorter than Brockman averaged 13.1 rebounds per game throughout his carrer with a high of 18.7 RPG during the 91-92 season. Rodman was also a *great* defender and it wasn't because of he could jump and block shots. (Brockman should watch film of Rodman if he can find some and study both his rebounding and defense.)

Charles Barkley was/is 6'5" tall (some say 6'4"). So another guy shorter than Brockman averaged 11.7 RPG during his career.

Brockman's game against Purdue was his best ever, especially his relentless and powerful rebounding. He went up another level that game against tough inside competition. Right now, he is capable of outrebounding most power forwards in the NBA.

Great rebounders are very hard to find. The taller guys don't know or can't execute the finer points of getting position. If he plays like he did against Purdue (he's capable of playing even better) he will do well in the camps and he should make the NBA.

I think he'll be a fan favorite, he's pretty awesome...when he layed out for that ball in the first clip, gotta love it!

I saw a clip last night which now I can't find when a guy drives and John blocks the guy and levels him, I want to see that more...hopefully it's more hard fouls and no more of this put a hand on a guy and they get an easy two points plus 1.

I like him already. It's that kind of heart and hustle we need from our big men. I LOVED that first clip. Thanks for the post.

Barkley and Rodman had great length and elite athleticism. According to draft express, he only has a 6'7 3/4 wingspan and that's including a pretty wide chest.

People need to seriously stop with the Barkley and Rodman nonsense. Those guys were elite atheltes, all time athletes. One could jump out of the gym and the other bounced around like a pogo stick. And they both could play the game in a lot of ways beyond their rebounding.

Brockman has absolutely NOTHING to do with those guys. You want to make an argument maybe he can stick, make it on the back of guys like Chuck Hayes and Reggie Evans.

I think he's more like Wes Unseld than Rodman as far as style. Wes would just get his fat *** around and MOVE people to get the ball. Now, he won't be anywhere near the level of player Wes was, but he can bring that physical, 'freight-train' mentality to the game. The guy is 260lb, which is the weight of most of the big centers, yet he's a 6'7'' PF.

I did like this part, though:

I'm always impressed by players who actually position themselves to have a chance at a board...and those are too few and far between.

I bet my friend 5 bucks that Brockman makes the reg. season roster. Here is why; 1st, money, he is a hungry young man who will earn less than the veteran minimum. 2nd, money, the current fiscal crisis in America does not allow us to get another Abdur-Rahim with the MLE. 3rd, he is the type of player that can make petrie look like a genius.

Brockman is what he is. I don't see what's a matter with people getting a bit carried away about Brockman. I mean isn't that what discussion boards are about. Optimismn and hope isn't a bad thing. Even if it isn't very likely to happen.

As far as I go, I enjoyed this post and will cheer for this young guy to do well here in Sacramento

I really cant believe that Rodman was only 6 6. Granted his long arms might have made him seem taller. Id have to look back at a team photo.

He is not like any of those other NBA dudes. He is his own unique self who appears to be a rebounding fool who can score down low. A tougher, bigger version of a David Lee maybe but again he has not yet played a minute in an NBA game. Sure gotta love the press and remarks about him tho'. Can't remember Kings ever having a 2nd rounder like that and the only first round pick who comes close was Brian Grant.

Jordan was 6'4" (NBA height = 6'6"), and Pippen 6'6" (NBA height = 6'8"). Rodman's usually said to be 6'6.5" (NBA 6'8"), which is consistent with the photo. But the Rodman and Barkley comparisons always seem to fail, don't they? They usually end up like "Daniel Artest weighs the same as Shaq, therefore..."

Michael "The Animal" Smith comes to mind. I see Brockman as a bigger (slightly in height, but moreso in bulk) but somewhat less athletic version of Smith. I'd be willing to be that he makes the roster. How much he actually plays in the regular season I couldn't tell you. But every team needs a scrapper, even if he's undersized.

This hardworking player better make it to the roster. It will certainly make the Kings' games a lot more bearable to watch than last year.

I hope Evans, Casspi, and Brochman work their a**-out and play with intensity everytime they get PT. It is kind of sickening already having to watch the softies play almost without effort, especially defensively.

Thank you. I hope Brockman can contribute and give us some heart and toughness. But Rodman and Barkley he is not.

Yeah I've heard pretty much everywhere that Michael Was 6'4 without shoes.

Look how he turned out ;)

No way im saying Brockman is a Jordan, not even on the same universe. But with his heart and hustle, I think he can be a decent player here in the NBA.

The upshot is that he develops as an all-out hustler in the Reggie Evans role (although I think he'll need to lose some weight just to at least gain some mobility to "defend" some fleet of foot PFs). One-dimensional rebounding machine, but for a team that needs it and his energy to ignite things he could be of some use, but strictly utility player. His defense in the NBA will really, really concern me, even more what I think will be merely average/poor finishing/scoring ability.
