World Series of Poker

I thought I'd start a WSOP thread, even though I have no clue how many of you guys even like watching or playing.

If you have been following the coverage of this year's WSOP, feel free to post your thoughts on the events thus far, and keep in mind, there's a WSOP Tournament of Champions freeroll coming up in a couple weeks.

I already know who won because I try and follow the poker world somewhat, so spoilers aren't going to bother me, however try and keep in mind that others who read this thread might not, so be kind and if you post a spoiler, give some advanced notice for your fellow mates.

I also ran across who won while searching for other info, but it's not hurting my enjoyment of the coverage. That was fun watching Chris Ferguson turn his last $1,000 chip into $200,000 before finally bowing out. It's going to be a slugfest from here on out with 17 players averaging around $1.5 million in chips each.

I'm really going to be jonesing for my poker fix when the WSOP and Tournament of Champs is over. There will still be Celebrity Poker Showdown which is quite enjoyable, but I'm really not caring for the way FoxSports covers their Superstar Invitational. I wish Comcast would pick up the Travel Channel, so I could watch the World Poker Tour. :(

By the way, I'm considering changing my username to PocketAces. ;)

i like that name too. If you want an avatar to match, lemme know.

Yea, I agree about Ferguson's final shots. That was a nice way to go out. Fergusson, unlike many of the players featured, was a total professional. Both in victory, and also in defeat.

I can't believe how many a-holes were featured this year. I hate watching players behave that way, but I suppose it's good for poker, in the long run. More drama means more viewers, means more newbs playing poker, both online and in B&M's.

Who the heck is that young guy who jumps up, runs around, pumps his fists, and acts like a total idiot, every time he wins a hand. You'd think he'd already won the $5 million bucks. Can't wait to see someone knock his butt out of there.

Ferguson is so cool. I also like...{{trying to remember his name}}...the older guy that wears the green hat. Dangit! I'm losing too many gray cells as I age.:o

His name is Mattias Andersson. He's a swede, i think. I agree, he is totally annoying. It would totally throw me off my game if he did that after beating me a pot. I would probably pay too much attention to knocking him out to spare my eardrums.

Dan Harrington is quite the story this year, though. That's the name of the guy in the green hat you mentioned. It's amazing how strong a player he is, especially since he feels he's not at his strongest level. Even more amazing is how many people entered last year's tourney where he made the final table (about 840, i think) and this year's event where they had a field around 2,500 entrants. For him make it this deep again two years in a row is just amazing. He just plays tight, solid poker.

However, I could do without Norman Chad (the announcer) getting all flabbergasted over seeing the ace of spades. "You know, Lon....the ace of spades is the PRETTIEST card in the deck! Ahhh! Ohhh!" As funny as I think his "last marriage" jokes are, I think the "ace of spades" stuff is a bit over the top.

I think the flamboyent players are kind of fun in small doses. ;) Mattias does get to be a bit much though. At first I thought he was only screaming "DA!" when he busted someone or survived a potential bust out, but as time goes on it seems like Doug Chrisitie's hand signal - he does it for almost anything.

Did you watch the Limit Hold 'Em final with the guy who had been homeless for 30+ years, Ellix? He was a trip.

I love watching the World Poker Tour. Last night's coverage of the Bad Boys featured some of my favorite players. I especially like the Unabomber (Phil Laak) and Gus Hanson. Howard Lederer is also one of the ones I really enjoy watching.

I think if I had to pick one player I like most of all it would be Gus Hanson. He's unpredictable because he's liable to go all in with anything from pocket rockets to a 2-7 unsuited... But he's an excellent judge of other players and has read guys better than almost anyone else I've ever seen.

I would love to find a place (not full of pop-ups, spyware, etc.) where we could play in a poker room, similar to some of the rooms Yahoo has available for various games. If anyone knows of a place like that, I'd be interested in joining in once in a while... But NOT for real money.

@NME: Oh, yea Elix. I forgot his last name. Yea, that guy was a total trip. His needle was pretty over the top also. I agree with what Johnny World said about it being more "good" for poker than "bad" in the long run, but it seemed a bit much. That kind of behavior is not appreciated in my book, but hey...that's poker. The kind of people who play serious, hardcore poker can be some of the most degenerate and dark personalities around.

Sometimes they say the worst things about you, your mother, or tell you they hope you get cancer. If you play long enough, you will hear some pretty hateful stuff, all just to put you on tilt and get your mind on them, and not on the cards. You gotta have thick skin to succeed, just like in pro sports.

@VF: Hush. I'm totally jealous :P As a comcast subscriber, I don't get the Travel Channel, which means no WPT. However, i just got WPT season 1 in the mail today. I think season 2 is coming out in a few months, so I'll be catching up soon.

Yea, Gus Hanson is pretty wild. He definitely has that reckless reputation. I love watching that guy play, because it's pretty rare to see grizzled veterans get thrown off their game as much as when they play against him. He's one of those guys who is completely fearless...and when he's in a hand, he could have literally ANY two cards.

I play at Pokerstars all the time. They have great software. It's nice looking, user friendly, and they have a wide variety of games. The best part about it is you can play all of their games for play money, or real money. They even have freerolls, where you sign up for FREE and play in tourneys to win a satellite to a REAL money.

I've never had a problem with spyware, and they don't use popup software either. My ID on there is "Sm4shNgr4b", so if anyone wants to play a little, I'm usually on the play money no limit holdem tables. If enough people like to play, we could set a KF poker nite.

Thanks for the info, AceKingSuited!

I'll have to check it out...later.

Right now, it's time for Big Brother 5!!!

Yeah, I like Gus Hanson too. He's a little crazy and rarely goes by the book, but he's also very smart and respectful of the game. And I just like the idea of a guy who looks like a soccer hooligan playing poker. :) It's kind of humorous to imagine him as a world class backgammon player too. In the second round of FSN's Superstar Invitational, he had everybody off balance and just slaughtered the table.

Another guy that's kind of a nut, but is great at reading players is Marcel Luske.

I mostly prefer the more controlled and cerebral guys though like Harrington, Lederer, Ferguson (best look ever) and Ivey (hey, Tiger Woods play poker too! ;) ).

You just named some of my favorites, Harrington, Ferguson, and Lederer. I appreciate Gus's skill at reading players and he is fun to watch. Luske, and his upside down sunglasses, is way weird. But, he is a good player...just a little to sure of himself for me.

I wish I had the chance to see more of the WSOP.

It'd be great to have a table of KingsFans members. I'll have to check out Pokerstars. Do they have private games that you can invite players to?

Unfortunately they don't have private tables, but if we have a full table of kings fans (9 players), then nobody would be able to sit down, besides us.

Other players could spectate the table though.

But yea, that would be great if we could get at least 6 players (NO INSTANT MESSAGING, GUYS! :) )

I play at partypoker.com....you can have private tables there

if anyone signs up with them they will get a $25 signon bonus and I will get $50
Hint Hint

I've got my monthly poker game this saturday.

Is this play money, Iggy? I'm saving my pennies for League Pass, so I can't afford to use real money...

AceKingSuited - I signed up tonight. Are there any beginner tables? It looks very intimidating for a newbie when people have like a gazillion chips...

:D

yep. the beginner tables are the 5/10 tables.

i'm assuming you're playing no limit holdem? When you open the program, on the middle left side, you'll see a button for holdem. click on that, and select the tab on the right hand side that says "play money".

from there, you'll see the table names on the left side, the amount of the blinds, bet structure (fixed, pot limit, or no limit), amount of players playing, and don't worry about the rest of the stuff to the right until you get the hang of their software.

scroll down till you get to the 5/10 NL tables. They give you 1000 chips for free, but you can only bust out 3 times per hour. then you have to wait an hour then try again. also, the players on those tables are usually extremely undiciplined, so you'll find that people tend to go all-in with rags. so, it will take some getting used to.

i hope you have fun there.

Okay, I signed in and went to a cheap table to practice. Had a fun time. We really should get together there sometime.

Hey, I found out that you can "find a name" to see if any of your friends are playing. I watched you, AceKingSuited, for a couple of hands on Saturday night. Dang! You have/had over 41,000 chips. BTW - I am DianaRigg. :p

lol, 41k? i must have just been getting started. at the 200/400 no limit tables you can sit with a 40k max, so then you build your stack from there.

when you're starting out, 40k sounds like a lot, but once you get a feel for the tables there, you'll understand 40k is not really that much. i've seen some players sit with a 500k on a good rush. you'll even see ppl sitting with over a mil once in a blue moon.

dianarigg? ok, cool. look forward to seeing you online. :)

on the front page of the program, at the top left hand side you'll see the buttons for the toolbar. click the "requests" button, then select "find a player" on the drop down menu. a popup will launch where you input a player name. input the player ID, then click "find". another popup will launch telling you what table(s) that player is on, if they're playing. however, it doesn't tell you if a player is online or not. it's possible that person is just in the lobby or if they're spectating, or checking their account.

btw, it's not case sensetive.

Speaking of spoilers....

I play at paradise poker all the time, but I thought I would download at pokerstars since some of you guys are playing there. Just a word of caution to those who don't want to know who won the WSOP yet, that information is prominently displayed on pokerstars homepage. I wanted to be surprised, but oh well...

Thanks for the warning. Fortunately, I haven't seen the home page of late.

GeraldCanFly? I hardly recognized you!!

Glad you made it back.

:D

well, that was fun. i just got killed by VF at pokerstars. i flopped a full house, deuces full of queens, and i was thinking....i wonder how much money i can get her to put into this pot. she's betting into me, so i slowplay it. she eventually puts me all in.

turn the cards over....she beats my full house with a higher full house, queens over deuces!

argh. nice hand VF. :D

I already told her I'm not falling for the sweet little old lady routine! I knew she was a hustler. ;)

I registered there the other day, but haven't played yet. Maybe I'll see what's going on tonight.

AKS - Nice taking your "money."

I left when the guy who took your spot started swearing right off the bat, avoiding the filters. Does that go on much?

I'm off to fix dinner. Maybe we could find a table later and play a few "friendly" hands.

:D

Most of the tables I have set in on have been fun. Was in one room where a couple of players got crude. One of the other players said, "Hey this is not an internet porn site." Someone else agreed. They cooled it right away and even apologized.
