With the sword of Whisenhant hanging over our heads I'm almost frightened what we'd come up with.
Its actually about a season or two too early for Avery, but its not as if he is going to sit out there waiting forever. The problem is is what we really need this year is not a great coach, but jsut a coach willing to sacrifice himself ont he altar of our rebuild. Then after this year and likely next, you bring in the great coach once its time to start winning again. It really would be nice if Reggie would just play the kids, work on his resume, and we could reaplce him after the year. But if he's not going to do that, and he's going to get canned, yeah Avery would be right at the top of my list.
Avery works for me. His former team tuning him out as a screamer is scary, but how many coaches who have taken teams to 67 wins seasons and the NBA Finals do you really see laying around? And can we afford any more of this amateur hour stuff?

Highly touted this offseason as perhaps the best defensive assistant coach in the league, Thibodeau hasn't gotten anywhere near enough recognition for his role in helping win the Boston Celtics' their first NBA championship in twenty years. Their suddenly stellar defense was key in clinching the 2008 title, and Coach Thibodeau had everything to do with that.
He did the same thing during his time with the Houston Rockets, pushing them to the top of the league in defense three years in a row. This specialty has started to get his name mentioned whenever a head coaching position opens up, but he hasn't quite gotten the clout necessary to nab one of those openings. Still, without him, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce all might have lighter ring fingers.

Nope in fact he is still Rick's top assistant in Houston. He will be a head coach in the next 5 years.

Anyway assistants aren't "available" they can't take on another team or come close to putting together a staff during the season. So as far as right now is concerned. those you listed earlier are our only shot unless you get a good coach from the WNBA. LOL that sounds hilarious doesn't it. Shame is, it could become reality.
People really need to forget about Yoda. He's RETIRED and he's not going to come back.

Tom Thibodeau actually interviewed for the Kings' job back in 2006. The Maloofs, in all of their wisdom, decided to go with Musselman instead

It's KG's fault they (Boston) play excellent defense. Sure he can teach them how to play it, but they gotta want to.

This is in no way a Dig at the WNBA. This is a Dig at an NBA franchise getting a coach that has never coached an NBA player. Don't try to spin this into a male shovanist thing. I have respect for the WNBA. I also like high school basketball but, I don't want a high school coach either.

I think if Reggie is fired, they'll use an interim coach and then go after someone like Shaw in the summer. I really don't see Brian Shaw leaving the Lakers (even if they gave the Kings permission to talk to him) while they're in the middle of blazing a path back to the big show...

thing is, I think this is the time to land a new coach
He would get 1.5 years of settling in and when 2010 hits and we (hopefully) get a big star, he would know the in and out's of starting the team's engine.

Just a week ago I was against firing Reggie Theus. Now, not so sure. I am very dissapointed that he does not have the guts to start his young performers. Which coach would be the best developmentally? Probably a guy like Jeff Van Gundy, an old timer with lots of experience and commanding of respect.

Shaw and Thibideau are both going to get shots this offseason. But that is the problem -- they won't be available until the offseason. If something happens midseason, best two names out there are Avery and Flip.

I could see Shaw coming to us, but I do have to wonder if the ship has sailed considering that we passed on Shaw for ! Reggie Theus. As VF said, not sure he wants to leave the Lakers' blazing glory path.
As for Thibodeau, I really like him, especially with all those defensive credentials. I keep harking back to Mike Brown with the Cavs, who was considered one of the architects of the Pistons' defensive scheme--he came to Cleveland in '05, made them a .600 winning team, transformed them into a defensive juggernaut and for the most part got all the players to buy into the system. Seeing how awful our defense is (not surprising, the writing was scrawled all over the wall with Artest leaving), it's the coach now that has to instill those fundamentals to our players now--Thibodeau is a really legitimate option for that, even though, as one poster said we seemed to have somehow went for ! Muss over him

The only thing that turns me off of getting a new coach at the end of the season, is the fact the its only gonna take the rebuilding process that much longer. If we have to get a new coach then get one ASAP. In my opinion we should stick it out with Reggie, I mean c'mon guys he's actually gives a damn (up until these last two games) about this team. We are an injury struck, mediocre team in the best conference and he's still talking playoffs. I know this is a rebuilding team, but this guy wants to win. And if we keep this guy until we become a playoff team again, we will be pretty special. I am in no way a supporter of Reggie, but I am a big optimist, and also one of those guys who is having a tough time with this whole rebuilding stage.
I want us to hire Flip Saunders. He did a good job in Detroit, and he'd be the perfect guy to teach our guys an offensive system. He has his own system that's a lot like the Princeton O. Reggie doesn't have any system. If Flip could use KMart kinda like he used Rip, running him off a lot of screens and stuff, put one of Thompson/Hawes down low, and use our shooters like Cisco, we'd atleast be better on offense. We still wouldn't be a great team but we'd be better and atleast watchable on offense.

Thompson had 6 minutes played after three quarters tonight.. Hes a rookie hes going to make mistakes. Reggie pulled him directly after two made mistakes tonight. What do you think that does to Jasons confidence? We are getting nowhere playing Mikki & B Jax 25 + minutes a night when we have solid young talent in Brown & Thompson that should be getting ALL of those minutes.. No disrespect to Bobby Jax because I love him to death andeverything he has done for the organization. But he is a mentor now.
Mikki should not be starting. Hawes & Thompson have clearly both outplayed him by a wide margain either one deserves the spot.
Reggie is TERRIBLE at calling time outs. he lets the other team go on 7-0 & 9-0 runs tells the Kings to keep pushing the ball? If he was Phil Jackson I wouldnt be so hard on him for this but hes not.
What happend to the triangle offense? I have not seen any such offense being played.
I don't even know whats going on definsively for us, but we are not utilizing double teams like we should be and were not playing ANY perimeter defense... ahhhh im so frustrated right now I could just go on and on about Reggie and his coaching style all night. god help us all.

I have mixed emotions about Avery. He's not going to come here in the middle of the season without some kind of guaranteed contract for more than a half a season. He'll probably want a minimum of three years. Not sure I would want to jump into that without the option of looking at everyone else available at the end of the season.
For that reason, I would be inclined to appoint one of the assistants for the rest of the year. Hell, appoint BJax for the rest of the year for all I care. Just make it clear to whoever it is, exactly what you want to see from him. The rifleman would be the most obvious choice. I mean, whose going to argue with him.
When a new coach comes in, he'll want his own coaching staff. Thats pretty hard to do in the middle of the year.
At the moment, with whose available my choices in order would be:
1. Turner
2. Thibodeau
3. Shaw
4. Saunders
5. Van Gundy
6. Johnson ( if I could just get him for a year and half, I would have him
higher)
