What's cookin' in Kings kitchen???

Listening to all of the "aromas from the kings kitchen" one other thing pops up: the need for a new BENCH MOB!! Remember them in 99-02?

The Jon Barry led mob who many times came in and outscored the starters and built leads on just about anybody? Barry, Pollard, BobbyJ, Turkoglu and ole instant points Funderburk.

Yeah, a bench mob who was hungry and hard nosed and who were better than most of the other benches and who relished their roles off the bench.

In rebuilding that is hard to do right now. The key word in this being "role" players. Guys who knew what was expected of them, who had the killer instincts. The players we get back from trading Bibbs and/or RonRon can be those guys with one or two fighting for starting roles.

But I kinda like the idea of Beno & Kevin, Salmons & Mikki and Brad with Cisco, Jones, Douby, Hawes and two big bangers from the trades off the bench. This bench is no bench mob for sure but Cisco and Jones could be the start plus a Pollard type and a scoring banger.

Heck, unless I'm missing somethin' Watkins may be one of those bigs off the bench.

well, the bench from 02/03 season - Jackson, Jackson, Turkoglu, Pollard, Clark - would have made a PO in the Eastern Conference. We were just that good. We could never really stay healthy

Even more funny. Wait, did you just imply that Bibby was average at best on defense? Please.

I am with trading Bibby, Udrih is a pure PG. I also agree that keeping Artest is a necessity. I like the approach of playing intense defense and shutting teams down rather than being soft and making lots of shots. You need Artest for that.

Please....what? I'm not sure if you agree with that or disagree.....

How true that was. I remember when we had pretty much our entire starting lineup out injured and went down to Texas for the 'Texas 3-Step' and beat San Antonio(pretty bad, too), Houston, and Dallas. It just sucks that THAT was our championship team, and with one Chris Webber-sized thud onto the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, all came crashing down. And with that, we were well on our way to...lots of power point presentations and bad halftime kool-aid.

and Kenny Thomas:(

Beno IS a pure PG in today's NBA. He tends more toward Nash and less toward Bibbs. A ball handler, a distributor, someone who gets others going, one who can drive and dish or drive all the way. He contributes about 13 ppg and 5 ast. The scoring load is Salmons and Cisco now but will be Kevin and Bibbs in a bit.

I agree with both of you :)

Beno is a pure PG, but has SG skills hehe.. Just because his assists aren't up near 8 a game does not mean he couldn't have those stats in the right situation. Kings tend to either;

A. Hold the ball too long after the pass for it to be an assist
B. produce a second pass after the first negating the assist from the first player to touch the ball
C. Pass to Miller in the high post and in turn Miller gets the assist. I think since K-Mart has been out Miller has been averaging about 3.5 a game in assists..

They might beat our current starters pretty often, too. And players like Songaila, Peeler, House and Evans were a dime a dozen to us then. But it's a cinch to get players when you're a contender with a rep for being a fun team that gives their bench plenty of minutes. Nowadays we can't even hang onto a Ronnie Price, but who could blame him for leaving? Low pay and low minutes; demoralized, losing team drinking Muss kool aid.

At least we got rid of Muss.

What's cookin' II >> Bibby

Seems the Cavs today are being pushed by their media to get Bibby and even take some of the Kings deadwood, KT for example. For Gooden for sure but then Kings would need to take back a bunch as well as Gooden only gets $6.4M. Unfortunately that could mean Donyell Marshall ($5.5M), Ira Newbie ($3.4M) and a 1st rounder ($2M), for example. (note: media did not suggest that combo, my smells out of the kitchen strictly).

Donyell has this year and next on his contract and Newbie is an expiring.

Cleveland media argue that can put cavs in 3 horse race with Celts and Pistons.

Your smells would be about right maybe -- Gooden is the sort of guy you get longer term, but he's not that good and he's their starting PF. Adding Bibby while subtracting Gooden doesn't move them where they want to go. Now Marshall maybe Snow and a #1 might. Two matching contracts set to expire after next year who would be out of the normal rotation there. But then the problem is us. Getting a single mid first round pick back for Bibby remains only minimally tempting. If its the best you can do, then whatever. But odds are you are taking a hit. Bibby to Cleveland really still needs a thrid team in order for everybody to get what they want out of it.

can we really afford to wait ? What if we start winning some more ? Can beggers be choosers ?

I kinda want to see a Beno/Mayo/Kmart combo.....am I crazy? nevermind a Artest/Kmart/Bibby can Beno/Mayo/Kmart with Salmons co-exist?

I know Salmons and Mayo need the ball in their hands...but.....hmmmm. mayo could give us a true future allstar!

I stand by Blake Griffin, Bayless, Mayo, Batum, Love. in that order.

I wouldn't sell short on Bibby at the trade deadline. When he comes back next year, he would be an expiring contract for us...or another trade partner. That could be the scenario. I do not see Cleveland as a trade partner unless, like Brick mentioned there is a 3rd team involved.

As for these guys on college, I'm not hanging my hat on them to get us over the hump. Not saying I don't want a guy but I'm looking at hopefully making a big FA sign after next year.

Guys in college are fantasy for now and can have no bearing on anything Kings or anyone else can/would/could do.

Kings have found some good pieces (Salmons, Jones, Cisco, Beno) who are playing surprising ball. But Bibbs and Beno, RonRon and Salmons, are not all compatible pieces with Kevin as the 2. Salmons, a natural 3, is far better as starter and shows better overall control and game and is very good defender.

Both Bibbs and RonRon will have higher value in the next 6 weeks and RonRon has an opt out end of this year that could leave Kings with nothing.

That alone is reason to trade him if it is not obvious he is major part of future plans. Bibbs can opt out after next year but Petri likely will not want to wait. One issue is with Bibbs here, Beno backs up tho' he has shown real starter abilities. With Bibbs gone, then Kings need really good backup PG, not Cisco as initial ball handler and distributor.
