What about Ed Davis?

I saw a mention of Ed Davis on another board and wanted to see what the basketball minds here think of him.

He's a young defensive minded PF, block shots, and takes few shots at a high FG%. He's a role player.

Everyone wants Derrick Favors next to Cousins which is obviously not happening. Davis is not Favors, but I was honestly surprised to see their production be as similar as it is. Here is a link to basketball reference comparing the two:

For those who have watched him more, would he be a good sidekick to Cousins? How is his man to man and help defense?

Proposal would be a Davis / Patterson swap with possible candy thrown in from our side.

Why for Memphis? Davis played a 19 minutes total in the last 9 playoff games that Memphis played so he obviously was not considered a key to their championship strategy. Memphis is also coming right off of a bitter sweep to the Spurs where they struggled to score 90 points. Patterson could provide scoring off of the bench for them. Patterson/Davis were taken one after the other in the same draft so their salaries are almost identical.

Why for us? With Landry on board taking up shots I just don't see Patterson doing much at all this year. My guess is his value will go down as he puts up the worst numbers of his career and we let him walk for nothing next summer. Similar to the Hickson situation.

A Cousins/JT/Landry/Davis crew up front is a lot more well rounded than a Cousins/JT/Landry/Patterson group.

Seems like this could be helpful for both teams. Thoughts?

Davis is one of the best guys to have next to Cousins. He is a flat out excellent defender-on ball, in the post, blocking shots, you name it. And not only that, but he has a well-rounded offensive game. His per-36 stats last year were 13.8 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks.

with pleasure, but Memphis is not trading him for the sake of trading someone. They have 4 legit big men on their roster, which is perfect for max depth.

Correct so Gasol/Koufos are going to cover the C spot 100% of the time I would imagine. When Randolph comes out, would they want Patterson's ability to score (with a defending, shotblocking center behind him) or Ed Davis providing more defense/shotblocking? That would be the question.

problem with that is that in the wake of Hollins' departure, his unwillingness to play Davis, whom Hollinger et. al appear to be quite high on, was cited among the reasons for not extending his contract. he's probably pretty hard to get and I'm not sure Memphis would want a player with so little defensive talent as PPat. would love the swap from our end, though.

Yeah, I would cheerfully try Davis out at the spot, but I don't see Memphis moving him for anything less than a great package. The stats geeks over there got him on purpose, and then one of their disputes with Hollins was that he didn't play him enough. So hard to see them parting with him before he ever gets the minutes they envisioned for him.

Didn't know that. Thanks

Maybe we can woo Hollinger with IT's PER to convince him ;)

I would love Davis next to Cousins. He has the size, athletic ability, and does everything we need at that position. In fact, I have come to terms that Davis and Udoh would be the most "gettable" bigs that would be great fits next to Cousins.

The thing with Memphis is that they need shooting. It was obviously a weakness that the Spurs exploited in the playoffs last year. Lets first take a look at their current roster makeup.

Conley/Bayless
Allen/Pondexter/Wroten
Prince/Greene
Randolph/Davis/Leur/Reed
Gasol/Koufos

Patterson would be a good backup PF who can help spread the floor with his 3pt shot when he is in. They could even play him at SF in the right matchups with Randolph and Gasol on the floor. Unfortunately, I think Davis is much more valuable than Patterson so I think we would have to sweeten the deal. Thomas seems to be a logical throw in, but they already have Bayless. Would they be willing to play Thomas with Bayless at times? Maybe in the right matchup, but who really knows? I think value wise Patterson and Thomas for Davis makes a lot of sense, but knowing they have Bayless makes it unlikely that they take such a package. I think we would have to begin throwing picks in. We received two 2nd round picks from the Evans trade. We could include both of the picks and Patterson for Davis, or we could even throw Thomas into the mix if Memphis sees him as someone who can contribute. This trade makes a lot more sense if Conley or Bayless goes down with a serious injury near the trade deadline.

If we pulled off this trade, our lineup would be:
Vasquez/McCallum/Fredette
Thornton/McLemore
Moute/Salmons/Outlaw
Davis/Landry/Hayes
Cousins/Thompson

Again, I don't think Memphis is a very good trading partner with us so I don't see this trade happening. Milwaukee, who has Udoh, doesn't seem like a very good trading partner either. They need help at SF which we cannot fill. I've been trying to scheme up a 3 team deal that would send Evan Turner to the Bucks and Udoh to the Kings, but unfortunately, I am still exploring this opportunity.

When was he ever slow-footed or less than impressive offensively? Those are the two biggest parts of his game.

I'd love to have Davis, but I suspect it will take more than Patterson to woo him away from the Grizz. His blocked shots per 36 minutes come out to 3.1 blocks per game. Of course we've only had a very small sampling, but on paper, he looks like the perfect fit next to Cousins. And your right, he's a very good athlete.

I've never watched him play, but I'm pretty sure that he won't impress me as much as Jeff Withey did.

If we are targeting anyone from the Grizzlies it should be Quincy Pondexter as our starting SF, don't need Davis

As you know, I'm a big Jeff Withey fan. Have been for a couple of years now. Unfortunately, water under the bridge now. Perhaps later!

How about Tyrus Thomas? Now that were out of the Oden race he seems like the only shot blocker left.

You can't be serious! There's no way in hell I'd ever want him on our team. He has never accomplished anything, and he's been in the league more than a while.

It is frustrating that two centers were involved in the Tyreke deal and neither one ended up on the Kings. Robin Lopez and/or Jeff Withey would have looked pretty good in Kings uniforms. I understand those picks from Portland where turned into M'Bah Moute, but still it would have been nice to get a serviceable 7 footer to play goalie.

My first option is asik but if we can't get him if love a young player with upside like Davis. With Memphis being contenders and I'm sure they don't wanna pay him a lot since it would put the over the tax we could swing a deal with them.

Memphis has Rudy gay trade exception of 7.4 mill which can be traded for thorntan straight up and has to be used by season end. We follow that up with Thompson,Isaiah for Ed Davis, green, Franklin, and Reed.
So basically it is Ed Davis for Thompson, Thorntan, and Isaiah. Memphis gets much need depth at pg and pf also getting a scorer of the bench in thorntan which they sorely lacked in the playoffs

We get a solid young forward who could be a great defender and good shot blocker and is a nice fit with cousins

I like Davis but that's way too much to give up for him.

Come on now. Ed Davis might be useful, but he hasn't even proven he's a full time starter in this league, and we're out here shipping out every tradeable piece on the team for him?
