Thats funny, I don't think people are picking up on the sarcasm in your post!

Apparently he's atheletic, only 23 years old, is a tough defender and can spot up from midrange or for 3.

We could use more shooting with our current squad, so that sounds good... although behind Artest/Garcia/Thomas/Corliss he'll probably never see the court.

Then again, he's 6'8"... so he might get the start at center if Brad goes out. :D
~~

i have no knowledge of sergei monya whatsover...but if he develops into a solid player, he could be a permanent backup at the SF (something the kings haven't had since hedo). he's strong, athletic, and young...and he likes to play defense. could be a steal. could be a bust. either way, GP took no real risk with this trade, given brian skinner's very limited minutes

as for potapenko...w/e. he's a big dude who can clog the lane, though one without tact or timing, making him a poor shotblocker. nothing special. he'll receive about as much time as skinner did.

Does that make him a poor man's Ostertag ;)

Welcome Sergei!!

basically, yeah. tag had personality at least...

:)

Why couldn't we have kept Tag??? He single handedly turned the game around in Utah with rejecting KMart's dunk and then put Ron to the floor twice and gave him his hip pointer.

i heard monia is a poor mans kirilenko

I don't think thats right. The Blazer's other russian player, Khypra, is the poor man's Kirelenko, or thats what people were saying during the European tournament this summer. Still what I've heard about Monia has been good, so I'm open to this move.

Always good to see the Kings acquiring a Ukranian and a Russian in the same trade.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they the first representatives from their respective countries to play for the Kings? We've covered a lot of geographical ground before, but this is a lot.

Well, Sarunas and Songaila are Lithuanian, so I think we are now working on filling up all of the former USSR nations.

I don't mind getting an unproven 1st round pick in a trade for a guy that we didn't play. Portland never gave this guy a chance, and it's obvious Petrie likes him or he never woudl have traded for him.

Welcome to Sacramento and the Kings, Sergei! (I hope you don't have to paint your shoes.)

Grant is saying he talked to Petrie and supposedly Petrie extensively scouted Monya. Should be interesting. Not too much risk here and it looks like we get Skinner's salary off the books sooner. Potapenko and Monya's contracts end with 06/07 season and Skinner's was thru 07/08 season.

I think that last part is only partially correct.

Deal is that Potapenko and Monia both have contracts ending after next year. And so does Skinner effectively -- there is a TEAM option for the year after that (07-08), so obviously we could have just chosen not to exercise it, effectively making Skinner's contract end at the end of 06-07 as well. Basically all the contracts are 06-07 enders.

In any case, if the kid has potential (and I do not opine having only seen him play a handful of minutes) then I still think this is a decent move. Give up nothing we were using, and get back a young guy to develop. Those are normally good moves. Little downside, much upside, even though we did give up the currently best player in the transaction.

Welcome to the Kings, Sergei!

From what I remember, this guy was pretty highly regarded but on draft night he lasted until #23 because of concerns about his contract and when/if he'd ever come over. Not that draft position is that great of an indicator, but the general consensus was that he was going in the top 15 and I seem to remember rumors that the Jazz were hot for him at #14.

If the word on him is that he's got good size, is an aggressive and dedicated defender and a good athlete then I think we're going to like the kid.

You are right. I just checked and was coming back to edit. Team option for 07/08. So it is effectively a wash time-wise
