Welcome Misters Patterson, Aldrich and Douglas

Bricklayer

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Or as Bobby Hansen would say "Welcome to Hell!"

In any case, while it doesn't fit the mood of the fanbase after such a move, its tradition as well to welcome in the latest batch of poor saps...er...exciting new talent with a welcome thread, so here it is.

The brief rundown:

Patrick Patterson
Age: 24 (in three weeks)
6'9" 235lb

Undersized PF (although no more so than TRob). Plays with energy. Has quickly stretched his range to become a true stretch 4. Even hits threes form the corners. He's an effiecient .519 shooter with 3pt range, which gives the advanced stats guys a joy joy. On the flipside despite toughness rep, is one of the very worst rebounding PFs in the league (a great swap for one of the league's worst defensive teams), and just as apt to be overwhelmed inside on defense as TRob. An x-factor is this: was Boogie's teammate in at Kentucky. Its hard to imagine that is entirely accidental. He'll hit open spot shots created by Cousins or Reke, and maybe just maybe he was brought in to help control DeMarcus as well.

Cole Aldrich
Age: 24
6'11" 245lb
Large lumbering type center, who I distinctly recall 1 or 2 people suggesting we should have drafted instead of Cousins that year (he was taken #11). :p A shotblocking/rebounder type, but like almost all the other players of that ilk Petrie acquires, its not clear if he can do it at the NBA level. Has been strictly a spot/mopup duty guy in his first three years, having played in 71games in 3 years, and averaged all of 7.1min/gm.

Toney Douglas
Age: 27 (in 3 weeks)
6'2" 185lb
I hardly need describe this guy. He is an amalgram of Marcus Thornton, Jimmer, Brooks, IT and every other undisciplined chucker we have collected. Athletic, aggressive, never bothers to take time to plot things..ooh! The basket! Shoot! Can bomb from long range, and will certainly try. Had one awful year from deep, but normally about a 38% guy and took 383 of them 3 years ago. Had a rep for putting in a good effort on defense in is early career.

Squint hard and you have an efficient stretch 4, a shotblocker/reboudner to clog the middle, and a long range bomber/defensive pest at guard who may replace another chucking guard in our followup trade. Squint hard. Squint REAL hard. I now pronounce you Petrie. :p

In any case, welcome guys.

It is likely two of them will not be with us next year so welcom Patterson and thanks for stopping by for the cup of coffee you other two. Not sure I should learn your names. My disappointment with our owners is affecting my mood about you three. Sorry.

Douglas is just a mixed bag at a player. This is his game, in a nutshell: he hits threes and prevents opponents from hitting threes. And he doesn't attack the rim but he lets opponents get to the rim against him. Oh, and let's also throw out that he's a relatively inefficient shooting chucker, and a 6'2" SG (not even a combo guard). Just the sort of player we seem to love (and Keith Smart seems to love).

Patterson fits right in with our team. Atrocious defense--in particular, he seems to have a ton of mid-range jumpers hit over him (watch any Houston game and you'll see that). Of course, the lack of defense ties in with the lack of rebounding/shotblocking, and being undersized. There's a reason, despite the superficially good offensive stats that saw over 50% shooting, he was easily trade bait. Also, he's soft--he has an incredibly low free throw rate, and rarely plays around the rim. Largely operates as a soft jumpshooter. A soft jumpshooter wtih atrocious defense. Really good mid-range jumpshooter, but at the end, they are what they are--mid-range J's. And he gives back a ton of mid-range J's back the other way. We'll love him as well. Sigh.

Aldrich was largely operated as a scrub, and there's not much to report on him. He's big, can rebound, and block shots based on limited time, but he's always been ignored on offense, has no range or any handles at all, but a lot of bigs have carved a space in the league just for being able to rebound and block shots while neglecting offense. Not sure if Aldrich has the mental makeup or dedication to see it through that he can be a defensive roleplayer, but there's potential at least. By far the most intriguing player in this deal for us, which is sad, since Aldrich can easily be a lottery bust, but the other two are overrated and horrible.

Now, let's get to Robinson: if you followed me at the college prospects section, I've long hated Robinson: I thought he had no offense in college, and largely lived off this space of rebounding, and that's about it. He was an able defender and was very athletic in college, though, but still, a Paul Millsap without the offense: what's that lead to? That was my initial assessment of TRob. I had him as a late 1st rounder, and for a time many of us were saying that he was playing like a late 1st rounder, which is about right. And if you look at what he's done with us: offensively, he's a mess. He can't finish around the basket at all, despite getting a ton of offensive boards off our guards' bricks, he gets blocked a ton, he's sloppy with his handles at times, and he doesn't stretch the floor that well.

And believe it or not, considering all the lowly defenders we had, TRob was our 2nd best defender. Behind Chuck Hayes. Oh, he was flawed--all of our defenders were--but at least T-Rob guarded the mid-range shot very well. It's just that when you got a step on him, it was over--he couldn't defend the rim at all, especially with his size. Still, having some semblance of defense with rebounding is something our team could have used, and we're replacing him with Patterson--who brings zero defense and zero rebounding. Congratulations, Maloofs.

And think about how often have lottery picks been traded halfway through the season? Doesn't happen. Usually they're drafted because invested in for at least 3-4 years, usually 4 years. Even Hilton Armstrong, Adam Morrison and Cedric Simmons got that opportunity.

Just a completely foolish move. Talent downgrade, and trading a lottery pick arguably at their lowest value point (T-Rob at the least can improve from here, and likely will at Houston where they'll actually use him properly).

They are all NBA players, it's just that is pretty much how this team was constructed. A lot of guys who belong in the NBA, but not on the same team.

Every team could use a 7ft #5 big to soak up fouls and contact.

If you started an NBA team and had Douglas as your 5th guard, you'd be doing all right. Young, and the upside to become a 3rd guard. Too bad this team already has Brooks, Jimmer, Thornton, and IT, who all share the same upside.

Patterson is a great compliment to Cuz, especially with JJ at SF. JT off the bench makes much more sense for balance purposes anyway.

The team didn't get any worse. But it's hard to see any sort of plan here.
