Webber silence?

I didn't really want to make a thread about this, but what is up with his silence? I know he has kind of clammed up since the Final Four, but he was so vocal about the Kings staying and nothing for what seems like weeks.

I know he always alluded to working on something in the background, but I am wondering if he had another group of investors that KJ didn't choose and so he stopped being involved.

Its possible, I heard rumors he was involved with the Filipino effort. But that's still a long way from him having anything but one sided feelings on the matter.

Webber has a lot going on in ATL. I don't think he wants to get in the way. Plus it might be hard working in KJ's shadow.

I think it's a combination of things that caused him to basically remove his active support of the Sacramento efforts. He got a lot of flack for his comments on TNT (bad information) and I think he just decided to stay out of after that. It's funny when I heard his interview with Grant after that happened I wasn't happy with the way Grant treated him. But I just listened to the interview again (below) and he clearly went into the interview feeling disrespected and defensive. It's just went downhill from there with Grant's lack of tact. I don't believe this one incident alone caused him to stay out of the picture, but it certainly didn't help.

Wow...

Chris Webber has been very vocal in his support of Sacramento during this whole ordeal. I am truly astonished that some seem to be questioning his heart and how he feels about our town and our team. The man doesn't send a tweet and people assume he's some kind of pariah?

Is it really necessary to try and find a reason to badmouth one of the players whose jersey hangs in the rafters of our arena? Seriously?

As far as him staying out of the picture, that's not true. He has made several statements on TNT that made it abundantly clear he did not want to see Sacramento lose its team. He still maintains a lot of ties with the city, including the loan of a great deal of his personal black history memorabilia to the Crocker Museum. He just might not want to muddy the waters, especially since it's not a secret that there is no love lost between Webber and the Maloofs. He could easily figure his presence could cause more harm than good.

Give him a break. He isn't one of the bad guys.

I doubt if anyone is badmouthing him. Perhaps some aren't clear in the way they are writing their notes. I certainly am not badmouthing him. I am just curious as to what's up as he seems to have disappeared. That could either be for good reason or maybe something bad has happened to him. I don't watch TNT so maybe I have missed something.

With a face like mine, can you honestly believe I would be mean to anyone?

He has been quieter recently. But having shared memories of "that team" with Chris Webber, I'll always love him. And he has been such a vocal supporter and promoter for our city. I couldn't possible ask for more from him.

Sorry VF but I feel you're overreacting here. I don't think anyone has badmouthed him or painted him as one of the bad guys. But like you said, he has been very vocal in his support of Sacramento during this whole ordeal. I don't think it's wrong for people to wonder (innocently) why he hasn't as much as tweeted some sort of congratulatory response. If Carmichael Dave didn't post anything on the matter people would be the wondering the exact same thing - that doesn't make him a bad guy.

Why is everything so dramatic with you when you think somebody is badmouthing a player you like? If you read the OP (who has a Chris Webber picture as his avatar), he's not really criticizing CWebb. He's just putting it out there and wondering if there is something up and I don't think he is out of line for thinking that could be a possibility.

I'm sure C-Webb would love for the Kings to stay here but he definitely has not done anything even close to what Mitch Richmond or many others have done. I do appreciate him saying the positive stuff on TNT the last few years though.

And no, there has been no behind the scenes C-Webb stuff btw. He has not been involved at all.

That's CWebb in my avatar btw. Just stating that in case anyone wants to say I don't like the guy.

Thank you.

...Webber told Feigen that while he’s happy, he knows the situation still has room to play out and it’s too early to completely celebrate:

CWebb not quite ready to celebrate Sac win.”It’s not over. I’m cautiously optimistic. I remember Horry hit a last second shot against us.”

It might not be the celebratory quote many had hoped for, but as we all know, dealing with the Maloof family isn’t exactly an easy process and it’s doubtful few know that more than Webber.

Hopefully, the cautiously optimistic Webber will have more reason to celebrate in the coming weeks and months and will finally have a brand new, state of the art complex where his jersey can hang uninterrupted.

I hope that calms those who had questions, concerns, doubts, etc.

I think it's a reasonable question. He doesn't have any obligation to do anything. I'd love for Peja and Vlade to show up and have a press conference with KJ to announce that they're joining the investment team but I'm not going to question why they haven't. It's awesome that Mitch is involved but we can't expect every star player that's played for the team to pitch in a million dollars or whatever. A celebratory tweet or quote is nice because it shows that they still value Sacramento and their place in Kings history, but they don't need to say a thing. The thing with Webber though is that at one point he was actively involved in this, supposedly. Several times he referred to mysterious people he was working with but never really explained who they were or what the plan was (correct me if I'm wrong). Whenever that plan didn't materialize, I think it's reasonable to wonder why he didn't join KJ's favored team. If Burkle had dropped out entirely with no explanation, everyone would've wondered why. Not only has Webber not been involved (to our knowledge) but he's barely had anything to say on the subject. It suggests that something really soured him on helping the cause. But it doesn't matter at this point because the potential ownership group has met the NBA expectations and there will be plenty of opportunities in the future for Webber to re-insert himself into franchise if he desires. He'll be back in the picture at some point.

He works for TNT and is not actively involved in the arena negotiations. I have no doubt that if he was in the TNT studio when they discussed this he would have come out in support. This is really a non-story, everyone knows he loves Sacramento and has supported the region. There's nothing wrong with exercising some discretion and not 'dancing in the endzone' as KJ put it when there's still a lot of hurdles and Maloofery to get through

I dont think Webber deserves any criticism here. If anyone believes he does then we should ask, What has Vlade, Peja, Pollard, Bibby, Doug done as well? Certainly no more than Webber during this situation. I don't EXPECT any of these guys to cough up $$$. It would be nice if they did like Mitch, but I am not going to hold it against them. Its their money and investing in a basketball team is not exactly a cash cow.
