[Game] [VSL Game 3] Kings vs. Suns, 7/14/2015 7pm Pacific 10pm Eastern (ESPNU)

2nd place.

Spurs and Kings 3-0.

The other teams with a better point differential have 2 wins or fewer.
We are second place among the 3-0 teams, but currently fifth place among the undefeated teams.

We are +38. The Raptors are +47, so if they win tomorrow, they definitely move ahead of us. The Pistons are +33, so if they win by 6 they move ahead. The Thunder are +28, so if they win by 11 they move ahead. Presumably none of them will be silly enough to throw away points at the end of the game like we did. We had a 35 point lead in the fourth quarter and let it drop to 18 at the end.

Still, any way you cut it we're in pretty dire position if we don't beat Cleveland. There will be at least one undefeated team, and as many as seven, but right now it's looking most likely that it will be 3-5 undefeated teams. So most likely at 3-1 we would be out, or optimistically if there are only 3 undefeated teams we'd have to have the best differential - our differential would be +37 or worse.

Anyway, I suppose we'll have a much clearer view of things after tomorrow.

IMO point differential is silly way to decide these things (especially with all the advanced statistics available today). But if they’re hellbent on using it, then it would make more sense to me to use the “largest lead of the game” by the winning team as the great separator.

Doing so would remedy teams having to leave their ‘A’ lineups in games just to maintain or further run up the score. Furthermore, using today’s win as an example, the biggest lead the KINGS held told more of the story of the game than did the end score — which was misleading.

If the Kings never took their foot off the gas it would have been great for the otherwise meaningless PD stat but would have looked childish. Pretty unforgivable to just quit playing with 2.5 minutes or so left and lost like 10 points on the PD though.
