[Game] [VSL Championship] Kings vs Hornets, 7/20/2025 7pm Pacific 10pm Eastern (ESPN)

He’s way smoother on offense than Looney though. The comp for IJ for me since he first started flashing in summer league last year is Naz Reid. Both similar sizes with similar builds. Naz has turned into a solid perimeter shooter but starting out he was primarily a paint-and-in scorer.
Obviously, there's no comparison when it comes to offense. That clutch three gave me goosebumps. That's confidence.

Carter played excellent, what are you talking about? He didn't shoot well, but everything else was top notch.

I wouldnt use that word to describe it and shooting isn’t “yeah, that was awful but the other things”. Especially if you take 16. It’s the name of the game. I’ve been more impressed with him in actual NBA games though so it’s not a big deal that I wasn’t floored by this summer league game.

The Hornets were stuck on 75 for an eternity but we couldn't execute one good play to tie the game. That's on the coach.

The passiveness from Nique is infuriating. Passed up over half a dozen open shots this game. I don't mind missing shots. I hate not taking shots. Too little, too late gave me bad LaVine memories. He's gotta do better. He has the talent but needs the killer mentality.

Tired legs all around. Mistry obviously let them have the green light and wanted everyone to keep shooting it. Carter had probably one of his better "PG" games tonight for all the doubters. If the Kings have an average shooting night he's up around 10+ assists on the night.

Eh, Clifford is more of a glue guy though. That's going to keep him in the league longer than shooting every time. He's a natural point F. Maybe he develops that, but it's kind of like Keegan or Harrison Barnes where he's probably too thoughtful to just jack up garbage.

For whatever it’s worth, it certainly felt like he was jacking up a good amount of garbage in the fourth quarter tonight but it also felt like the Kings were encouraging him to get those reps.

Eh, he's the most talented offensive player on the floor. He has to be aggressive. His role on the big club is not what we are looking for in this game.

I don't care what the score says, Isaac Jones is the MVP.

And do the Kings really think that Jonathan Kuminga is a better player by a wide margin than the guy they just signed to a regular contract?
IJ is the MVP. He kept us in the game and was the main reason we were right there till the end.

I'm not a fan on Kuminga but he is the better NBA player by a wide margin.

Well, if he is strong...he wouldn't be getting push around like that though. That's one thing I notice about that dude, he ain't strong.
It’s not his fault the coach with a time out in his pocket didn’t get Caldwell on the floor. Extremely poor coaching by Mistry down the stretch of this game.

So far, yes. But Jones only played 304 minutes last year. Kuminga played 1144.

The arc of Jones' development is extraordinary.
Kuminga is the poster child of talent mismanagement. He was not properly developed by the Warriors and yet he's able to make an impact. He could develop into a #2 guy on a playoff team under the right ecosystem. While IJ is good, I don't quite see that ceiling with him. The peak of that arc is what I'm talking about.

Will Zemerle of Sports Illustrated has this to say:

"But Isaac Jones might be the biggest takeaway from Summer League for Sacramento. He's on the Kings main roster already next season, and Sacramento has a clear roster gap at the backup power forward spot.

Jones is certainly a different player than Keegan Murray, but he's shown throughout Summer League that he at least deserves a look at rotational minutes this season. He played both the four and the five throughout the tournament, but no matter where he was lined up, excelled when he got close to the basket.

That along with his hustle and athleticism fit right into the culture and identity that Scott Perry and the Kings are trying to build next year."

Devin couldn’t find his shot but he played great defense and has 13 assists to 3 turnovers these last two games.

IJ showed out. I actually never noticed or watched him on defense. Any thoughts on that end?

Maxi showed skill but was kinda just ok as a whole in summer league outside of that hot start. I think he will look better in a normal NBA setting.

Nique was outstanding for 4 games, a non factor in game 5 and then a non factor for 3 quarters in game 6. Overall he sure looks like a rotation player day one however.

Great defense for iCraw in several games but did basically nothing on offense.

Cardwell’s defense was awesome, I hope he can stick.

Didn’t really like the coaching.

A lot of promising pieces here. We need one to really pop and couple others to stick.

It’s hard to not feel disappointed. The loss is one thing but the guys we wanted to shine didn’t the last 2 games.
Actually, given the team composition, the most important player on this roster, at least for the coming season, is IJ. And he played great.

Devin and Nique can take their time. No matter how good they are, they will not get much time during the season. A major trade or injuries can change that, but it's not easy to trade Lavine, we shouldn't trade Keon, and we won't trade Dennis. Monk is a possibility, but let's see what the market says.

DDR is a bigger possibility, since his contract is smaller. Even otherwise, there are more minutes available for IJ, particularly with Jake and Val gone, and Lyles not yet resigned.

ps: Crawford too fits the bill from a position perspective. Hope he makes a case during the season.

He stayed with his man, blocked out pretty well, but had trouble stopping the taller players like Kalkbrenner from scoring. Last season, fans here complained that he kept getting lost on defense. I did not notice that in summer league, at least in the quarters I was able to watch.

Jones only had one block against Charlotte, none against Toronto, and one against both Cleveland and the Suns. I really see him more as a power forward rather than center.

He is definitely a pf not a center.

I have something to say about this loss:
1. This game is hard to watch. Back to back game...it seems players are tired
2. Nique is not as unique as I thought when he is being challenged.
3. Coach Mistry sucks. Really? Telling Nique to purposely miss the free throw? What a stupid strategy.
4. Daeqwon Plowden sucks. I thought he was good. How can you screw up that last rebound? Laying on the floor without making effort to go after the ball. No wonder you been bouncing around the league.

Plowden really blew it when IJ won that jump ball. He hit the ball between the two Kings players on his side and instead of going for the ball, Plowden just stood there and boxed out air. The Hornets player just went around him and tossed the ball across the court for a wide open 3.
