UEFA Champions League

I thought Kezman's shot on goal against Spain was decent. He beat the keeper, but had to go for the far post. He will miss out the first game agains Bayern because of the yellow cards. So will Murihno since he got a two game ban yesterday from UEFA because of the whole Barca fiasco.

Well, after a long season it's time to end it with the Champions League final. FC Liverpool vs. AC Milan on Wednesday night in Istanbul, Turkey. What do you boys and girls think? Who is your favourite? Personally, I hate Italian (defensive) teams, so I wish Liverpool could make it. But to put wishes aside, I must say that Milan will win. They will kill the game and Shevchenko will secure the win in the 65th minute. Yeah talk about detail, but that's what I think. So, 1:0 for Milan and another disappointment for me. Last year was the same. I was cheering for Monaco and they lost. Then came Euro 2004, I was really excited about the Czechs and they lost to Greece in the final. Why would this year be any different.

Eh, I'm just rambling on....

As a Liverpool fan from the age of 5 (now 38) you have to dilute some of my enthusiasm for the scousers but it really feels like this is Liverpool's year.

The current squad isnt as talented as the Red teams of yesteryear, but they have key players in critical areas.

Dudek has his critics, but he's an excellent shot stopper and with Hypia and Carragher at the heart of the defence they can deal with any arial threat from Milan. The midfield energy and determination of Gerrard shouldn't be underestimated. I've seen him carry this Liverpool team on his back. He wants success and has the ability to create a goal out of nothing. Rise is a maurader down the wing, with a thunderous left foot and upfront Cisse has come back from a desperate leg injury which threatened to end his career and has show flashes of his old pace. Baros, while a little greedy has proved he knows how to find the net.

Liverpool like to play a counter-attacking game. I dont think they will go all guns blazing from the first whistle. They will create chances and have the skill to convert those into goals.

Prediction 2:1 Liverpool.

Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart, and you'll never walk alone. You'll never walk alone.:)

Hey Iggy, aren't you supposed to be a fan of Everton? :D

Kidding really, it's nice that you cheer for Liverpool in this game. But there are probably some Everton fans who want Milan to win and that's just silly.

I just hope that the fans behave in Turkey. There have been ugly scenes in the past between English and Turkish fans.

Hey people, the final starts in half an hour. I sure hope we'll see a few goals today, but something tells me it will be a slugfest with one or no goals at all.

Halftime score is 3:0 for Milan!!!!! Oh boy, I knew Milan would win, but this is quite a surprise.

What a shame, this game is over as a contest. I wouldn't want to be a Liverpool fan right now, it could get even uglier in the second half.

Yes Savo.

Its a huge disappointment. I really thought this would be Liverpool's year to lift the trophy. It's also bad news for the club that their lowly (5th) league place means its only the UEFA cup next season :(

Still, the team has done fantastically well to get this far, but i can help feeling sad at the way the final is playing out.

LK

It's wonderful. I didnt think they could turn it around in the second half.

Its the equivalent of being 30 points down to San Antonio at half time and forcing OT!!

I bet changing my avatar helped !! lol

Extra time coming up.

Wow, that is a great comparison LK!

Anyway, people with a heart condition should avoid the next half hour of this game!

I say this will go all the way to a penalty shoot-out!

EXTRAORDINARY !!

Absolutely fantastic.

CHAMPIONS of EUROPE !!

Wonder Reds. On the way we beat the champions of Italy, we beat the champions of England.

Unbelievable.....:D

Well, what can I say? This is one of the best games I have ever seen!
The Incredible Reds are Champions!!!!

What drama in the end, amazing!

I'm just happy! For the first time since 2002, I'm happy. Finally, a team that played with so much heart and determination is the winner. They defied the odds from the beginning and if anyone deserves it, it's L'pool!

I wish I could be in Liverpool right now. It's crazy out there I'm sure. I don't think there will be a lot of people going to work tomorrow :)

Like I said, the last time I was so happy, was when Brazil won the World Cup in 2002 (they beat England in the quarter-finals, sorry about that LK ;)). After that, things were quite awful. In 2003, Milan won the Champions League and in 2004, Porto did it. I didn't like the way they played. Later that year, Greece won Euro 2004 and that was another disappointment for me.

Well, this year things went the way they were supposed to :)

And I still remember the UEFA Cup final in 2001, when Liverpool defeated Alaves 5:4 after Extra time (remember LK?). That was also an amazing game. I guess the Reds have to play such games, they have to annoy their fans :D

In the end, I just wanna say that Dudek is the man! He was a stud out there and without him this would never happen. And to think that people say he is a bad keeper. Go figure.

PS: Thank you LK for your message.

**** Liverpool.

REMINDER FROM VF21 - Do NOT bypass the profanity filters. They are there for a reason. Thank you.

Come on man. I know you're a Man U fan, but there's no need to say stuff like that. Would you rather see Milan as champs? After all, they were the ones who knocked United out.

It's 21 years since Liverpool lifted the European Cup. This is the 5th time they have won it in their history. They get to keep this particular trophy forever!

Steeped in tradition, Liverpool have had many amazing nights in Europe. I can remember watching them on the tv as a kid. Certainly the Alavez game was a rollercoaster ride, but this win, tonight, from a position of despair at half time was another chapter in the sucess of the club.

The goalkeep, Dudek did excel. Two point blank, reaction saves at the end of extra time gave the Reds the chance to win it on penalties, and whilst i would have preferred a winning goal to come from open play i have no qualms about taking this win !

Tomorrow, UEFA have a decision to make as to whether or not to let Liverpool defend their newly won title of CHAMPIONS of EUROPE next season. Liverpool finished 5th in the league and only the top 4 qualify by right. (Chelsea, Arsenal, Man Utd and Everton) What a shame if they arent given the chance.

If you win something, you should have the chance to defend your trophy. That's what I think. But what can UEFA do? I doubt they will let 5 English clubs in the CL. The same thing happened in Spain 5 years ago. Real Madrid won the CL, but finished 5th in La Liga. Back then, the Spanish FA decided to send Real to the CL and Zaragoza (finished 4th) had to go into the Uefa Cup. However, can you imagine something like this in England? Don't forget that Everton (best pals with L'pool) finished 4th in the Premiership this year.

Dunno what will happen, but it will be a tough decision.

One possibility being suggested is that the Champions of Wales have proposed a 'premilinary round' vs Liverpool as a pre-qualifyer to the qualifyers. The Welsh club would get the gate receipts from both legs as their reward for the offer and if they win they go on to the qualifyers in the normal way.

We'll see...........

That is an interesting idea. I mean the Welsh team don't really stand a chance in Europe. This way, both clubs would benefit. Cash for the Champion of Wales and a chance to defend the trophy for L'pool.

That was a great match. Too bad it was spoiled by Penalty kicks. They should play till they are carried off to a morgue. Its the freakin championship game for crying out loud!.. Sheesh!

I disagee to a extent. Why bend the rules just because you aer Liverpool or any other of big clubs. THey didn't play well enough that year to qualify for CL and they should just leave it at that. Even some of their CL wins are questinable (hint goal against Chelsea where ball never completely crossed the line - the rule says the whole ball and not parts of it have to be over the line).

'm happy for them that they onebecause Benitez is a very good manager and they do have some of most passioante fans so good for them. JThey should just use it as an inspiration to play better next year in EPL and qualify.

OK that is a good argument. The whole point of the Champions League is that teams qualify through their domestic leagues. But you know how it is, in the past the Champs always defended the trophy. It's a tradition. There is no rule, but usually the respected champion qualified for the competition.

You are wrong here. This is the game of football and such situations happen. It is up to the referee to make the decision and he made it. That is the basic rule in football I believe. It is what it is. Maradona scored a goal with his hand and it counted (the hand of God). There are numerous situations like that and it's up to the referee to judge. That's how it's always been and that is the charm of football. No computers and stuff. All you need is a field, two goals, 22 players, 4 referees and a ball. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Yeah I agree. I doubt UEFA will do anything, so it's up to Liverpool to prove that this was no lucky break. They need to fight in the Premiership next year and qualify the usual way for the 2006/2007 CL.

Correct again VJ, (although i wish you weren't).

Liverpool's league form (the criteria for CL qualification) wasnt good enough and they have only themselves to blame. I think UEFA will not establish any president by allowing them to defend their title and i can accept that. (but i m sure you canunderstand my disappointment)

As for the 'goal' against Chelsea...I would feel cheated if that had been given against my team, so i do feel a bit sorry for you as a Chelsea supporter. However, we both know that Chelsea are the 'best' team in England at the moment (as defined by their dominance of the league) so you have had plenty to cheer about as well this year.:)

the UEFA [president said for Liverppol to log a protest. I think they will be allowed to defend their title.
I'm glad Liverpool won. If not Everton then Merseyside.

Funny i;ve been supporting Everton since I was 5. Born and riased in Liverpool!!!

Sorry, but I just had to post this :)

Well, Liverpool is my favorite (together with Chelsea, but that's only because of Kezman) of all the Premier league teams.
With that being said, British football blows.
