Water Polo basics for Olympic watchers

#1
For those who are interested in watching Water Polo I thought I would provide some details using basketball and hockey terms.

Objectives: score the most goals

Time: 4, 8-minute quarters

Game flow: a mix of basketball and hockey

1) 6 field players and 1 goalie.

2) field players generally 1 post player, 5 field players. At times teams run a double post.

3) for all field players: only one hand can touch the ball at a time. Goalies can use two.

4) Teams will either enter the ball to the post or move the ball on the perimeter looking for a shot.

5) If ball put in the post, the post player will either execute a drop step spin move, snap shoulders for a step out shot, lay-out for a shot or throw a back hand.

6) if a defender sinks, pull backs or holds an opponent it results in a 20 second power play (man advantage), if clear path to goal between the posts then a penalty shot called instead.

7) Exclusions are typically but not exclusively called against post defenders. If a player gets 3 exclusions they are done for the game.

8) Perimeter players will move the ball around the perimeter to move the goalie, open shooting lanes or enable post entry passes.

9) top teams will move the ball quickly from side to side with the ball never touching the water.

10) tournament structure is two 6 team pools: top 4 in each pool advance to quarterfinals vs other pool: 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3, 3 vs 2, 4 vs 1.
