I remember telling a buddy of mine about being upset with what a journalist had to say on a topic. The friend reminded me that by and large they aren't the sharpest tool in the drawer. We're not talking rocket scientists here. You could make a case that they their "media face time" to intelligence quotient is the lowest of all occupations in our society (well, maybe politicians might be up there). This guy follows the rule..
I think it's "sharpest tool in the shed" or maybe "sharpest pencil in the drawer" or you could even say "not the brightest bulb in the lamp."
