Tyreke Evans detained by CHP this evening for reckless driving

I did this when I was young. Would you have wanted me to fork out $10K as a 21 year old flying low in a 2001 Eclipse? I was EASILY doing 120, RACING a Mustang. Almost every 20 year old at some point decides to see what their ride 'can do'. This is a non-issue. Learn from it, move on. And I'm sure he will.

Were you a public figure? Were you worth $24 million? Those factors do have some bearing here.

And again, this is not about me. I'm fine with his Twitter/Facebook apology. Some evidently aren't, and as an organization that has had some issues in the past with players and coaches doing dumb things behind the wheel of a car (there are five named in this thread alone, apart from Tyreke), to take a firm stand with the centerpiece of your franchise would send a message to the rest of the team. It would also provide you with the opportunity to turn a negative into a positive, and maybe reach some young people in the process.

By the way, when I say a PSA, I'm talking "This is a message from Tyreke Evans and the Sacramento Kings. Be safe. Please don't speed." And that's it. It really is a winning solution.

Yeah...I think this is someone we should really be worrying about...a 'loose cannon' if you will:rolleyes::

Evans apologized today for speeding.

"I've learned my lesson to drive safely," Evans told a Bee reporter shortly after meeting with Kings president Geoff Petrie. "I've got a bright future ahead of me and I don't want mess it up with a car accident."

Evans said he was on his way to a barbecue near his home in Westlake when a friend reminded him he'd promised to sign autographs for children at a park on the way. It was on the way to the park that he was stopped and cited, he said.

Evans said the message from Petrie and others is that he must be careful and driving is not a right but a privilege.

I'm disappointed just hearing that someone was driving reckless. I'm sure that even if Tyreke showed up late to where he was going, people would have been just happy to see him period.

"Team Tyreke" obviously got on him:
http://nba.fanhouse.com/2010/06/01/team-tyreke-responds-to-evans-speeding-ticket/

Just a stupid, stupid things to do.
Agreed, I definitely think his reckless driving shouldn't be tolerated...but I do think that Tyreke has learned his lesson, and weprobably dont have anything to worry about him in the future. I guess we'll just have to see.

Isn't it odd that reckless driving has less of a penalty than drunk driving? In the latter case, there is the potential for reckless driving because of being drunk. But in the former case, there is the actual reckless driving. So the potential of doing something bad is given less penalty than actually doing something bad.

I don't remember the specifics, but I believe anything 20 MPH over the speed limit is considered wreckless driving (it may be at the decrection of the officer). I once came over a hill (speed limit was 45) doing 50 mph. On the other side the speed limit changed to 30 MPH (no way to slow down in time) with a officer sitting at the bottom of the hill collecting tickets. He claimed he almost gave me a wreckless driving ticket, but only made it out for speeding.

I can also remember several times driving between San Diego and LA while doing 85 mph (about as fast as my sister's Explorer would go), and barely keeping up with the flow of traffic.

I find it hilarious that Tyreke was speeding on his way to a pick-up basketball game to sign things for kids. Of all the dastardly things to do.

Yes this is a reminder that we should all watch how fast we're going. However, I don't think anyone payed much attention when Noce or Muss got arrested for DUI. Hell, even Ron Ron got more of a pass for his circus.

The point is that Reke is young. Live and let live. Now if he does this two or three more times, then I'll be indignantly angry.

Wake me up when the draft's on.

Edit: I neglected to mention the rape charges that had been brought up against Justin "Wonderboy" Williams. Honestly, I don't think anyone even bothered talking about that one.

So more details are coming out. It's now being reported he was up to 130 MPH in traffic. One thing if it was on I5 in the open, but on a high traffic highway in the city is beyond stupid. I want to know who was with him in the car. I've already heard stories first hand about some of the people he hangs out with. There was even a pic of one a few weeks ago in his ROY that's giving him a bad rep. Any real friends would not have let him drive like that.

The problem with posters like you is that you WANT to find out that things were worse off than they were. Look, he messed, he's learned his lesson. I think it was stupid but he's young and he's already apologized. I just find it frustrating that posters like you will make it so obvious that you're still bitter about rubio and just want to stir things up or hope for the worst just so you can be satisfied.

Got cited going 104mph in a 45mph zone. Ticket cost me $1776.00 but I didn't get a reckless driving.. Does not make me a bad influence either. I just like to drive fast on open roads...

No, driving 130MPH in traffic is incredibly stupid.

Well, according to that line of reasoning every dumb immature thing Tyreke does would make him that much more of a maturing influence on Cousins. I don't buy it.

Well, if Tyreke learned his lesson from this.. wouldn't you say that by his own failures he can help another rookie avoid the same mistakes?

That's part of being a mentor/leader in someone's life. You help them to avoid the same mistakes you've made. You can shed wisdom/light on certain situations because you've already lived them - AND suffered the consequences.

So, again - if Reke learned his lesson, yes he will have a maturing influence on Cuz and any other rookie that he encounters during his NBA career.

You've got to be kidding
Yeah, I suppose I am half kidding. But I'm also half serious because I want Evans to be bigger than an NBA star. NBA stars see their fans, their team and their family as the universe. But the world's a bigger place than that. My daughters, for example, don't fit into any of those three categories, but could easily be the victim of someone who drives like a maniac. So sorry if I would like to see more from Evans. And, to be fair, maybe he does see more, but it just didn't fit into his tweet.

If he wants to drive fast, maybe he should come to Germany. Most of the highways have no speed limits there ;)

MONDAY WAS A HOLIDAY FOLKS... Traffic was thin... I know, I live here... It wasn't regular traffic. Easy to get a incredibly fast expensive car up to whatever and not realize the crazyness of it...

No legit excuse for Tyreke though I agree. More than likely pushing his Mercedes, or maybe impressing a buddy in the car... he had a lapse of good judgment. Kick him in the *** and move on, he's 20. Every one of us has made bad decisions and hopefully learned from it. He will pay on this in his own way... Law, family, team, media criticism..

Posters that are making a character reference from this are reaching...

I have a question for you.

20 years old, rookie of the year, and one of only 4 players ( together with MJ, Oscar Robertson, and Lebron ) who averaged 20/5/5 on their rookie year.

Let us say you are right he just did a terrible thing.

Are you willing to let go of him in exchange for the true point guard Rubio and some goodies?:D

I know it isn't a excuse, but with most Mercedes cars sometimes you don't realize how fast you're going. I don't know if someboyd has ever driven one, but they're so insanely stable that you can go at 100 mph and feeling you're going "slow". Those cars are german, and in germany there's no speed limit. They are stable and safe even at higher speeds.

I don't know if it's Tyreke's case, but if the traffic was as thin as D13 is telling, he could have done it unconsciously. Seriously.

I don't think you do 130MPH unconsciously. At a certain point as you're zooming down the freeway, you have to look at the speedometer. And even if he didn't know exactly how fast he was going, he knew he was speeding. No excuse for doing 130.

I think most modern cars today can handle going 100mph at relatively stable manner; unfortunetly we are not in Germany and there are speed limits here.

Tyreke did an incredibly stupid thing. Period. There are no acceptable excuses for what he did. None. No matter how many people have done it, it is still incredibly stupid. Fortunately, most of us are lucky enough to not to kill ourselves or others when we make really stupid mistakes.

I know that he will suffer the legal consequences and he's having to endure a certain amount of public embarassment and criticism. Even worse for him, he's had to face people he loves and/or respects and be soundly chastised by them.

I'm not going to tar and feather him, make rash judgments about his overall character or label him for life, because of this. I just hoped he really learned something, that he gained a little maturity.

For the record, I went up to 110 MPH, in my 1966 Mustang 289 V8. It was in Nevada, back in the days when Nevada had no speed limit. It was actually a bit scary to me. A few years later, I took a Social Security death benefit claim from a couple whose young daughter had rolled her car in Nevada in a single-car accident. I was lucky, she wasn't. High, reckless speeding is dangerous and stupid.

Tyreke was stupid for doing this. And I am glad he apologizied. You even said it is not acceptable no matter how many people have done it. However, reading a couple of paragraphs below, you said you have gone 110 mph in your mustang as well. I guess my point is, many of us have done this when we were young, even me. I went 120 mph when I was 18 yrs old.

Young people don't understand until after the fact. It sounds like Tyreke has learned his lesson just as many of us have learned our lessons during our younger years.

Even though it was legal for me to do so in Nevada, it was still a stupid thing for me to do. I simply wasn't a good enough driver to be going that fast. When I said it was stupid of Tyreke and there are no excuses, I meant the same thing about myself for doing what I did. It was hardly my only youthful, stupid mistake.

Quite a few, actually:

DC13 - "Part of growing up."
joejoe - "He just got caught, that's all."
The Hammer - "Get over it. Big whoop."
r3ali5t - "In my eyes, it's not really a big deal."
Mealodon - "This is a non issue for me."
TTown Kings - "Not a big deal."
Rookie - "Thye kid got pedal happy with his new ride...big deal."
Arco Arena - "Thei should be filed under 'not a big deal'.
Andre87 - "big deal."
Gudmundur - "Haha, who cares?"

Feel free to add me to the list.

Yup I agree he has to know he was going that fast. It turns out its up to 130mph instead of 120. Throw in the fact that the CHP said he was weaving in and out of traffic, that is very dangerous.

Reckless driving is not only for speeding, but the way you speed. When you cut through traffic at such speeds on a public road with street tires, you are really playing with fire. He is 20 so he hasn't experienced enough in life to be "scared" yet. I hope he really learned his lesson.

In a way its a good thing that he got guns drawn on him right now so hopefully he really got scared and not go nuts with his benz in the future.

So did Evans make a stupid decision or is he stupid?

So did Evans make a stupid decision or is he stupid?

For those of you who make the jump to 'he's stupid,' I'd appreciate it if you would identify yourselves so I don't waste any more time reading your rants. And if you have children, my sympathies to them. Maybe you can all create your own board called STUPID KINGS FANS.

And for those of you who think Evans didn't make a stupid decision, grow up. Responsibility, accountability... those are all maturity values that I suspect you (and your parents) come up short on.

I suspect that most of the posters who said 'this is not a big deal' were not saying that Evans didn't make a stupid decision. I suspect that they were reacting to the overreaction of the he's-STUPID mongers.

wow 8 pages on a speeding ticket? really?!

130 through traffic gets to be more than a speeding ticket eventually.

As people have mentioned there is some automatic threshold where they call it "reckless driving" just because you are a certain number of mph above the speed limit, but 130 and passing other cars is pretty much reckless under any definition. If he wanted to do 110 down a backroad at 1:00 am when nobody was around and basically risk his own neck, if he weren't our franchise player I almost would not care. Stupidity of youth, and if he loses the gamble, he loses the gamble and pays the price himself. But going even faster and around other cars shifts that -- its the critical break between risking your own neck by being young and dumb, and risking somebody else's. Its still nothing more than a sit him down and talk to him moment, but at least now its noteworthy. Can't do that. Its not about you or the law or freedom or youth or anything at that point, its about the other people on the road. Nobody has the right to endanger others with that type of stuff. Gotta be smarter than that, and if I'm Team Tyreke I want to have a talk with whoever that passenger was as well, because chances are it was some whooping dip**** kid who thought this was a great idea and was treating it like an amusement park ride.

and i agree he made a mistake. but at the end of the day they gave him a citation... is it really worth talking about for 8 pages? general consensus seems to be "he made a mistake it happens all the time." everyday in fact. but because its a celeb he gets crucified for it.

Your question of whether it's worth talking about is pretty well answered by the fact that it's being talked about.

Most people here are hardly crucifying him. There just pointly out what a stupid thing he did.

In this case he happens to be "our" celeb. A whole lot of people have high hopes for this young man being the Kings franchise player. Finally some good luck. It would pretty much be devastating to this franchise to lose a talent like Evans. Whether through death, injury or prison. All potential outcomes, by the way.

Of course the Kings fans are stirred up about this. Enough to write about it. Why would we write this much in a Kings forum about some random celeb's errors of judgment that have nothing to do with the Kings or basketball? Doesn't mean we don't think some random celeb isn't just as stupid for some of their life choices.
