Tyreke & Cousins - the Workout Program?

Kingster

Hall of Famer
Just wondering, has anybody heard whether the two cogs to the Kings future are working out like they're serious, or having margaritas at South Beach? Also, any news on whether Tyreke is having a relative be his shooting coach, or has hired somebody with serious credibility in that area? This draft, and even FA, are very unimportant compared to whether these two are serious about improving their game

I don't understand why it's even optional. If I were paying someone millions of dollars to play basketball, things like maintaining a workout program, a decent diet, working with the appropriate coaches, even in the off season, etc. would all be contractual obligations that came with the job. It seems a bit wonky to me that they would be getting paid that much and have the option of not doing those things.

Not sure if you follow football, but this guy says hi.

I know a lot of the players wait til the season is all the way other since a lot of the times they work together and some of them are still in the post season.

The only thing Reke seems concerned with right now is hyping Blueprint, his brothers label, and doing crossfit training with Lamont P, his crappy trainer. Oh, he was also in LA paying video games with D Will. Who knows if he's working out.

Cousins is chilling on a beach in Hawaii.

Thornton, however, said he got antsy after a week of watching the playoffs, and got right back in the gym. Not sitting on a beach, not doing various promotions and playing video games for publicity, but sweating it out in the gym.

I'd love to think differently, but thus far I'm not confident in how seriously Reke and Cousins are taking this off season. I'm also less and less confident in Reke as a potential leader. If you want to be THE leader, you need to show it with your work ethic. I'm not seeing it, nor did I see it the 2nd half of last off season, where Reke ended up showing up overweight and out of shape. Wouldn't be surprised at all of Marcus outworks them both this summer, and comes back as the #1 option, which will of course end up causing problems with Reke, since he won't give up the ball at the end of a game.

I'm half joking, half serious.

Most players are pretty banged up at the end of the season. No doubt that Cousins was, which he admitted in a couple of interviews with Grant. And, most players usually take a vacation to some nice place in the world that has a beach, and is, in many cases, secluded. So I don't begrudge Cousins some relaxation time. Take a month and chill. But after that, its time to get back into the gym and work on all the things you need to improve. If both Tyreke and Cousins do that, then I'm fine with them.

I'd love for Cousins to go to Pete Newell's big man camp. And follow that by going to one of the top training facilities. Call up Wade and get a recommedation if necessary. I know there's one in LA that Kobe goes to every year.

It would be nice if we knew exactly what they were doing to get ready.

The second half of the season when he was injured?

Off season. He was working with Rose/Westbrook, doing 2 a days. Sprained his ankle with team usa, but then weeks later took off to China, stopped any and all updates of workouts(continued promo appearances w/ his brothers) during aug and sept, and showed up out of shape to training camp. He's young, all young guys go through it. I'm just hoping for some evidence he's learned from it, gotten more serious, and hired a new trainer and shooting coach.

Whereas when you listen to Marcus, you can tell he's damn serious, and I think confident enough to come into camp next year as THE leader, and back it up on the court. It will be very interesting(and disappointing), if marcus comes into camp next year having added more to his game and improved more this summer.

I always wondered why he didn't benefit as much from the offseason workouts as Rose and Westbrook did. I didn't know he stopped the workouts for whatever reason.

Thornton already is the leader of this team, simply from the fire he showed along with executing when it counts. When he came, the team fell in line and took on his personality. Starting fighting and scratching every game. It doesn't matter if Tyreke wants to be the leader or not. You don't get that title simply by proclaiming it. You have to be the hardest worker and back it up on the court. Doesn't work unless you put both of those things together.

I would love it if someone would give Tyreke this fan feedback constantly during the offseason, and challenge him on what he's doing on Twitter every week about how he's preparing himself for next season.

If all these athletes use social media, than use that access to our (fan) advantage, and challenge them where they virtually "live" - Twitter.

He's working with rose durant and Westbrook again.

That would be interesting if true, just in that it would explain the delay in starting things. Also could do worse than working with the 3 best young players still in the playoffs. Now all he has to do is absorb Duirant's shooting stroke and we're set. ;)

As an aside, I thought it was Evans/Rose/Mayo last year? Not Westbrook?

I have seen tweets about Tyreke talking about getting shots up a lot as of late. I don't see a problem with him getting away on vacation resting the ankle. I also expect him to come back in RekeHaVoC mode. He is a baller I think we knows he needs to improve alot he has a LONG offseason to get healthy.

They were all there last year evans/mayo/durant/rose/Westbrook. But it is indeed true, if you choose to believe me lol.

Even professional athletes need to take so time for R&R. The last time our star player overconsumed himself in offseason workouts, he wound up writhing on the American Airlines Center floor in the playoffs.

If they aren't working out once the draft is over and all that jazz, then we may have a problem. As is, let them get their rest.

Rose, Westbrook, and Love all practiced hard together at some high school in Santa Monica. I think Rose bailed on the practices with Evans and Mayo when he realized that practice would make all participants have a slump while the other one would make all candidates have career years

Well, he's really not. All of those guys are still playing ball. If he's going to sit around and wait for them, he might be sitting quite a long time. Why wait for others, anyway?

It's been over a month since the season ended. Cousins needs to get his A$$ out of Hawaii and start getting in shape and working on his game. It's not like he played 40 minutes a game during the regular season. He sat out virtually every game it seems with foul trouble. And Tyreke didn't even play for most of the season. They had plenty of rest during the season and now they've had over one month of relaxation after the season.

Its quite common for players to take off a few weeks after the season. I would think nearly universal actually. Longer if nursing injuries. And quite obviously guys still in the playoffs won't get to their offseaosn workout until June at least. Not being into the main grind of offseason workouts by mid-May isn't a huge disaster, particularly not in an offseason that could end up lasting 8 months or longer the way things are going. In Reke's case this is also a guy who struggled all season with plantar fasciaitis, which is a repetitive stress type injury that just needs rest. If we knew for a fact that these guys were sitting around on their couches watching reality TV with half a dozen crumpled up bags of potato chips around them that would be one thing. We know nothing more than what we can glean from such incredibly accurate and detailed a source as Twitter. Who knows, maybe our guys just reject the Twitter generation's conviction that picking their nose and eating it is something anybody gives a bleep about. "just did a set of 15!" isn't the same thing as announcing you are shooting a commercial or will be making an appearance.

Yeah you're probably right. I thought Mayo and Reke and Rose were practicing with McClanahan too though. I wonder if they bailed because they "didnt feel like sticking to the program" or whatever. At the same time, I feel stupid questioning Reke's work ethic when he's already put in a lifetime of work that got him to the NBA starting from like age 5. He has been tweeting about some late night work outs getting shots up and stuff so who knows. And we dont even know how long it took for him to heal from plantar fasciitis and the repeatedly sprained ankle.

Its very unhealthy to be at the plateau stage of training all the time. You have to taper down and even completely stop activity every now and then. I see nothing wrong with Tyreke and Cousins getting away from basketball for a little bit and taking a break.

Cosign.

For his sake though, he had better be getting shots up because Thorton knows what it is to being in a dog house; not getting any PT for the like of a Belinelli. Thorton wants a job and wants to be paid, so he'll work his butt off trying to accomplish that goal.

Cousins played in 81/82 games in the regular season, averaging just under 29 minutes per game. Pretty impressive considering he came into the league as an out of shape big man. At this point, i dont have any doubts about Cousins. I think he understands how good he is, and could be, and i think the intelligence is there to realize that itd be foolish to let it go to waste.

While I'm not concerned yet that they are not working on their games and conditioning and all that stuff, you have to understand its a long season and players have the right to take some time off and just rejuvenate. You can't expect them to immediately after the season start working out and doing all these things. Now, what I don't want to see in a month is Tyreke still playing Call of Duty or something instead of getting up a 1000 jumpers a day or something in that range. As for Cousins, I am sure he knows what he needs to work on and he will work on his conditioning hopefully and not eat too much bad food in Hawaii or wherever he is taking vacation.

When I played baseball, my legs were dead at the end of every season. I always took off a couple of months and did basicly nothing that required the use of my legs or my throwing arm. And amazingly enough, when I started working out again, my legs had their bounce back. Basketball is extremely hard on the legs. You have to get some rest, both physcially and mentally. Then you work on your game, and on getting back into game shape.
