Tyreke 20-5-5

Don't mean to rain on anybody's parade but, meh.

I think it's cool and all, and I'm happy for Evans and the Kings organization, but I don't consider this to be that big of a deal.

Try looking at it in a different way than just rookies. We all know that he is only the 4th rookie to accomplish 20-5-5. However, he is also 1 of only 3 players to accomplish it this season (Kobe & LeBron are the other 2).

Now, let's look at ALL the players currently playing who have EVER accomplished 20-5-5 in their careers:

LeBron James
Kobe Bryant
Grant Hill
Michael Finley
Kevin Garnett
Paul Pierce
Chris Paul
Tracey McGrady
Dwane Wade
Tyreke Evans

Forgive me if I missed any, but I am pretty sure that covers them all. My point being that it is a very short list of players who have ever done this, much less in their rookie seasons.

Very interesting post. Thanks.

It appears that you missed one season of Stephen Jackson.

But, yeah other than that...it's been done a total of 37 times by active players. Not a bad benchmark for a good season.

Even though I don't like the obsession over stats (especially over arbitrary decimal points) but I'm glad Evans is such elite company, and I'm glad that the Kings have such an awesome young talent. Great season by the rook.

Before all this 20-5-5 stuff began, I used to refer to that trio of numbers as the superstar starting point. The contributions in every category. Scoring, making guys better, being a physical force. Guess Finley and Jackson would belie that, but then again they were both being Nellie balled, so maybe we need some asterisks. In any case its a beautiful thing to have somehow gotten a hold of one of those guys. Its something fans literally wait decades to have happen to their team.

It is big but lets put it into perspective, im well glad that this is now over and we as an organisation, team and fan base can move forward and really work together towards the collective goal of being better on the court.

Agreed but I think it's more of a celebration in that we got a guy that has potential to be great and not just good.

So let's the celebration continue with the ROY up to draft time. Then hopefully another celebration up to FA. Then another one....and so on..:D

Yeah, no big deal...
Don't get me wrong. I think Evans is that big of a deal. I just don't think this particular statistic matters much. It was just a fun diversion and a neat bit of trivia, but that's about it. I hope you can see the difference.

I have to disagree a little bit. Your right in the sense that they're nothing more than stats on a piece of paper. But stats do matter. There is a statistical difference between LeBron James and Donte Greene.

Going 20/5/5 isn't an easy thing to acomplish. If it were, it would be done a lot more often. But add in the fact that only three players have done it their rookie seasons, and two of those three are in the HOF, and the third one will most certainly will be, its a hell of an acomplishment. Think of it as a measuring stick for greatness. Everyone thats done it his rookie year has gone on to become a great player. So far, its has a 100% accuracy rate.

His closest competitor for ROY is probably Stephen Curry. He had a terrific year and if you exclude Griffin from this years draft, and re-do it, Evans and Curry would go 1st and 2nd. Put them in what ever order you want according to your needs. And although much has been made of Tyreke's lack of pt guard skills and as some have applauded Curry's pt guard skills, their assist to turnover ratio is almost identical. Curry averaged 5.9 assists to 3.1 turnovers. while Evans averaged 5.8 assists to 3.0 turnovers. Now you might want to argue over how they got them, but to me it doesn't matter. They got them. Tyreke outpointed Curry 20.1 to 17.5 and out rebounded him 5.3 to 4.5 RPG.

I will say this about Curry. I watched a lot of Warrior games this year. And the only reason I watched was to see Curry. He's a lot of fun to watch, and like Evans, he's going to be a star in this league.

Jim Kozimor,

If you ever read this....saying that Tyreke should be a 3 on today's show is one of the more ridiculous things you've said. Do people not get that if Tyreke was at the 2, or the 3 you lose the mismatch you have right now? Tyreke is a mismatch for literally EVERY PG in the league right now.

He has the potential to be a guy that can drop 15 assists on you 8-10 boards, and maybe 10 pts one night,

Then another night drop 27 pts 8rbs 8asts on another night. People that keep saying Tyreke isn't a distributor, WRONG!!!. He's had some very nice assists nights and if he had players around him that could hit a mid range jumper on a consistent basis his assist numbers would be that much higher. Tyreke can only pass it to them, he can't shoot it for them as well.

The more you listen to Kozimor talk about basketball, the more it will make you wonder if he really understands the game all that much. He says a lot of idiotic things about the game for someone who has been on the inside of it.
