Tropical Island Video Game Draft -- Pending playoffs

Except that Mario Paint is an actual game, and was actually marketed as a game by Nintendo. It seems clear from Apple's website that GarageBand is not considered a game by Apple, and is not marketed as such. So, it should not be considered as such for the purposes of this draft.

Pick #11, again. So since GarageBand was vote down here's a pick in a different direction. Since I haven't picked a racing game yet, and I'm lacking in console games, I'll kill 2 birds with one stone with this pick. Apparently, this is the top selling playstation game of all time.

Looks like the consensus is Jespher needs to re-pick that pick... Jespher, if you are too over-whelmed with anger, I can make a pick for you...

Since this thing is moving so slow, and since dukeswh hasn't been online in a couple of days despite being sent a PM after Jespher's original pick (he would have timed out if we were going with this time instead of Jespher's second), I'm going to PM Lowenherz to get this thing rolling

Plenty of critically acclaimed and uber-popular juggernauts still on the board.

But I'm not passing up a little simplistic, light-hearted adventure with my favorite aliens from the planet Funkotron.

ToeJam & Earl - 1991 - Sega Genesis

This has an insanely simple and goofy premise with a really basic and somewhat repetitious gameplay ... and you know what, I could play it forever.

It's not really a platformer, it's vaguely an action/adventure, more of an explorer/collector game; it's not really anything actually: you wander around looking for presents and peices of your ship while avoiding weird enemy earthlings.

Seriously, that's a receipe for a killer game?

Yep!

Like Tecmo Super Bowl, the simplicity of the game is an attribute. And even being layered in light-hearted silliness, this game is actually really hard. I've only ever beat it using an emulator and saving practically every step in the later levels.

That combined with a Diablo style new map generator with each game, the replay value is fairly high.

I even think TJ & Earl's barbs in the elevator don't get old.

... for a while anyway.

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones

I enjoyed this game immensely. The follow up to the Warrior Within's second ending. You return home, your girl is kidnapped, the city is in ruins, and you get thrown overboard from your ship. Then you realize that you pulled a Marty McFly and screwed up time. You can guess what happens from there.

This one is specifically a 'ME' pick...It is very much a niche game...You either love it or hate it.

Dynasty Warriors 5 --- PS2 --- (2005)

Well, the point of the game is to KO wave after wave of hostile enemies en route to the specific mission goal. Some say its nothing more than ferocious button mashing, but get up into the Chaos difficulties, and youre dead in 4 hits from a general.

The game takes place during the Three Kingdom Era of China, and you get to take your choice of one of 48 characters (My favorite? Cao Pi) to go on your rampage. This game had every character with a (give-or-take) 5-stage musou (story) mode, giving you a long list of things to do. Add in the horrendously difficult task of finding fourth (ultimate) weapons and every single one of the 48 characters having their very own moveset you may not have the classic of all classics. But you have a game that will keep you more than occupied on your island.

I'm making this next pick a bit earlier than I ideally would, but after seeing both of its sequels taken... figure waiting any longer would really be pushing my luck.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time -- PS2 (2003) -- This revamped version of the PC classic may not have made as much money as any of its bloodier sequels, but it is my favorite of this version of the series. By far. The puzzles are hard enough to present a legitimate challenge, but not so hard that you feel the game is ****ing with you (I'm talking to you, Dahaka). The stylized visuals are great. The voice acting is... well, cheesy, but enjoyably so. The level design is impressive. The combat system, though, is what really got me hooked -- at the time it came out, the smooth animation and ability to seamlessly jump from enemy to enemy was unmatched on the PS2.

Two quick picks here because we are heading out of town for the day and I need to pack stuff up and hit the road.

I need a racing game, so Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit(PC) fills that need (1998). Used to play this on the LAN at a friends house all the time (with his wife as well on a third PC!) - maybe not the best racing game out there, but lots of fun with a cop trying to chase you down.

I think I am going to throw in something here that may hopefully not bite me before my turn comes back, as there are still several games I'd love to take. But I love this game, and in fact am playing through the expansion pack now.

I think here I will take another dungeon crawler that takes quite a while to work through, with great flexibility in the party system and types of characters you can build. Not nearly as in-depth as NWN, etc., but personally a lot more fun, is Dungeon Siege II (with the Broken World expansion pack for PC). They were released in 2005 and 2006, respectively. It added some strategy elements and many more options to outfit your party than the original. The addition of "pets", enchantable items, better graphics, a skill tree, and "powers" all tops the first game.

The expansion pack adds a few more things:

An additional act (campaign)
2 hybrid classes, based on existing classes
Dwarf as a playable race
Recipes (crafting system)

I can see myself playing through this again when I'm done to explore some more possibilities here....

My next game is, again, one that I probably wouldn't take so early but feels like it may be more threatened than some of the others on my list, so...

The Simpsons: Hit & Run -- PS2 (2003) -- There have been a bajillion Simpsons games made during the show's run, but this was the first since the original 4-player arcade game that didn't completely suck. It's also the best, and most logical, version of Springfield that has made it into a game. The bonus of bringing this one to the island, even more than the gameplay (open world, mission based, with driving... picture a Simpsons/GTA mash up), is that this game is a Simpsons nerd's dream -- it's got an original script voiced by the show's actors, in jokes and show references everywhere you look, and almost every side character you can think of shows up somewhere. In the downtown section, you can climb up to the top of the broken down monorail, hop in the front car, drive it off the track, jump the escalator that goes nowhere, pass the popsicle stick skyscraper (on fire, of course, due to the placement of Springfield's 50' magnifying glass), and head to Mr. Burns' Casino. Fun, fun, fun.

I think its about time for some of my sports games to be picked up.

ESPN NFL 2K5 --- PS2 --- (2004)

IMO, still the best football game to ever be made. IT had animations that Madden still hasn't caught up with. The graphics engine was completly real looking compared the PS2 era Madden's cartoonish look. The game that scared Madden into buying the exclusive rights to the NFL because it was such a threat.

Such a shame...There were so many little things still not in football games today. Interactive sidelines, refs on the field move to avoid contact, run into the goalpost and actually fall and not run right through it. The Create a Player still had more features than the games today...Im a CAP nerd who loves uuber-customizing my character, so its big to me.

The game interface was also the best. Including amazing pre-game and halftime reports with actuall ESPN 'talent.' Post game interview's with Suzy Kolber. Playing a game had the feel of playing an actuall ESPN broadcast.

And it has one of the more unique features in all football games. First-Person mode. Play from within the helmet. must say that it was one of the hardest things I have ever played, and SLAB the Corner Back was picked on time and time again.

Best football game ever.

Wow, Simpsons Hit and Run. Me and a good friend of mine played that game probably 100 hours combined multiplayer during junior high. That game was great.

For some reason that game made me sick when I played it. I puked the first time I played.. It's funny because GTA didn't do it to me.. This is the only game to ever make me puke when I played.

Sorry, I wasn't able able to post my pick. My internet at home is down for a total of 4 days now. And since i'm working in the mid east, the weekend here is friday and saturday, so I'm expecting the repairman today. by the way, how many picks did I miss? Will post my pick/s later.

Just one so far, but you have a second coming up after Bdouble and I pick.

I needed some more old school cred. Where to even start? One of the great old arcade games (this version complete with a hit/miss ratio and bonus levels).

Life was so much simpler back then.

The predecessor and sucessor of my next pick have both been taken.

Luckily for me, the one with the most personal nostalgia was left practically screaming for an island home.

SimCity 2000 (Special Edition) - 1995 - PC

Everything I could say about this game has already been said with the last two SimCity picks.

But for me. it's more sophisticated, visually detailed and enthralling than the first (and out of respect, iconic) of the series, while not being overly complex and cumbersome as the latter games in the series sometimes appeared to be (especially for us simple-minded folks).

Add on to that terra-forming, the urban renewal kit and the extra scenarios and real-life towns of the Special Edition, and this has unlimited replay value.

Now if I could just master deploying my fire fighters ...
