Tropical Island Video Game Draft -- Pending playoffs

I really enjoyed Bioshock, one of a small handful of single player only FPS games I actually played all the way through (and the "hard" way at that). But once I played it and beat it, I was done. For that reason I had a hard time putting it on my best of list last year. The art design and atmosphere was amazing though.

After seeing some good picks, I found a forgotten gem: Soulcalibur ソウルキャリバー for the Dreamcast

The fighting game to top all fighting games on the fighting game console to top all fighting game consoles... seriously, I have played loads of fighting games and this is the one I keep coming back to... and on the Dreamcast. It is just so well done; the graphics are sharp, the gameplay is responsive and intuitive... just a brilliant fighting game... it is as simple or complex as you want to play it. Just a masterpiece, pure and simple.

Pick #5 and time for a fighting game. Since the big brother Street Fighter II was taken already, I'll have to resort to bloodier methods. Known for its movie style characters, intense gore and gruesome fatalities, I bring you pick #5:

Mortal Kombat (Arcade Version)(1992)

I really like the sequels that added additional players. That would make single player more interesting on my island, but how can you argue with a classic? The rest of them are just watered down expansions anyway when you think about it. I hope I remember some quarters...

One reason I have not yet picked it up. ;)

I'm not enough of an FPS purist to be bothered by consoles, and I've got no patience for continually beefing up my computer enough to run all these games, so I'll be picking up the PS3 version when it comes out.

Great pick, probably one of the best fighting games I have ever played. But not on my list though coz i'm really not into fighting games. I enjoy it only if i'm playing against another human. Enjoyed great moments playing this game with my brothers and friends.

For my Fifth pick, I select:

Gears of War (2006) - Xbox 360

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gears_of_war

The very first game that I played when I bought my Xbox 360. Really awesome gameplay, loved the voice acting, cool cover and shooting style(I think that this is the first game to introduce this in a shooting game, but I could be wrong), and who wouldn't love the chainsaw?

But I absolutely cannot stand FPS games without a mouse and keyboard. Gamepads suck for FPS games.

While I do agree, there is something to be said for dumbing things down to the lowest common denominator the way console FPS games do. I'm not a huge fan of FPS games, yet I could jump into the properly designed ones and immediately hold my own online.

I agree that FPS games are better played on the PC, but little by little the console is gaining in this area with games that are properly designed(controlwise).Already some of the biggest hits in the Xbox 360 are FPS games. Although I would still prefer to play FPS games with a mouse and keyboard, I am beginning to like playing FPS games with my Xbox 360(whereas before I wouldn't even go near one).

There are a handful of solid games I had slotted as potential picks here, but none I would feel more pain at missing out on than this one.

Chrono Trigger - 1995 - SNES

It was a bit overlooked coming out toward the end of the Super Nintendo's lifespan, but is just an amazingly designed and executed RPG adventure created by a "Dream Team" of the genre.

Featured multiple-endings, side-quests centered around character development and beautifully rendered visuals and storylines.

And just when you think you've reached the final boss of the game ... oh, no wait, you're only halfway through.

Even if the multiple endings and ability to mix and match the seven members of your team (and get different dialogue and skill sets by doing so) didn't increase the replay value of this classic, I could still go through it over and over as though it were a favorite movie.

. If I wasn't lacking a FPS at the time of my last pick, this would have been taken. In fact, I actually had this typed in with the picture and explanation and the whole works, and changed my mind at the last minute. This rivals FFVI for the best SNES RPG IMO, with Secret Of Mana being a close 3rd

That makes twice I've lucked out duing this draft, with B-Dub letting NWN slip to me last round.

Here's hoping my luck continues :D

I can't stand the XBox 360 controller (largely, I'm sure, because I'm just not used to it), but a well designed FPS with the PS2/PS3 controller is remarkably intuitive.

For me XBOX 360 contoller is way better than PS controller when it comes to FPS games. I tried playing Halo first time before on my nephews PS2 and 20 minutes into the game I gave up. Maybe the PS2 controller is not just meant for me, I feel that it's too small for my liking, or I just have large hands. :p

I agree with the Xbox 360 controller > PS controller sentiment, but please do tell about this PS2 that could play Halo. I think that'd be worth quite a bit on eBay.

The Xbox 360 Controller is the best there is, except for the lousy d-pad. Clearly descended from the Dreamcast controller, with a handful of tweaks to put it over the top.

Play Call of Duty 4 for PS3. I'm sure it would change your stance just a little bit on that

But I don't enjoy playing FPS games with them. You cannot possibly have the degree of freedom/speed/flexibility allowed with a mouse and keyboard. You have to (generally) use auto-aim and larger hitboxes to compensate for the lack of precision of the device. I have tried several FPS games over the years on consoles of various kinds, and over and over again the controls are not optimal for that type of game.

I like consoles for other types of games, but FPS games on consoles always feel "dumbed down". Hence the reason for GGG's comment about being "designed" for the controller. I know some love the gamepads for those games (usually because they grew up using them) and hey, more power to you if you do.

I think it was PC Gamer who had a competiton between a group of M+K (PC Gamer) players vs. gamepad (console magazine of some kind, I think) players head to head and the M+K group wiped them out. The players were from their respective magazine staffs, so they were very good playing with their respective controllers.

I also just don't find playing FPS games with gamepads to be "fun". Without the degree of control and responsiveness of a M+K, the games feel "clunky".

JMHO, of course. YMMV.

I have no problem admitting that I like 'em dumbed down. I like challenging platformers, but I'm 100% button masher with every other type of game. Just let me beat stuff up, blow things up, and kill aliens into lots of bloody pieces quickly and easily.

Until they invent a controller with 50+ buttons that a human can somehow use and keep control of, I'm not sure that an FPS will ever be as playable on a console as a keyboard. Console players are good for my frag #s when they come online to play though. :D

One thing I could see changing that would be the advancement of the Wii type controllers, which obviously operate somewhat like a mouse and give precision you can't get elsewhere on a console. Point and shoot baby. ;)

In theory, yes, but the accuracy leaves something to be desired.

And this is why I like console FPS games, because I don't enjoy the genre much I don't take time to program 50+ buttons, I just jump in and play and get blown to bits by the guy that knows all the nuances of the control scheme and has remapped every single button.

For any kind of high level tournament play PC/M&K is the way to go. For pick up and play give me XBox Live and one of the four allowable button layouts any day.

I love the PS controller, and never really liked the XBox controller. I guess it's just something you get used to, because I've owned all 3 Playstation's at one point, and have never owned an Xbox

I understand, but COD4's controls could not be better I don't think.

I agree about the accuracy thing though. But, just like the preference between Xbox/PS controllers, I think it comes back to what you are used to playing.

I've been using the same button mapping scheme for 15 years now. Takes me a minute to set up, and then I am right back home in my comfort zone. Fairly unique though, and really messes people up who randomly want to play a game on my computer. :p

I'll say it again. Medal of Honor Heroes 2 and Metroid Prime 3 worked perfectly with the Wii remote and nunchuck. All new FPS's on the Wii are going to follow these formulas, like The Conduit.

I felt as comfortable with the accuracy and control like it was the mouse and keyboard (after placing the setting to advance and sensitivity to high). The nunchuck's analog stick provided more control than the keyboard could. The accuracy was not a problem (just don't play Red Steel, Ubisoft made the IR sensor too wavy and had no idea what they were doing). I guess my preference is like Warhawk though, I refuse to play FPS on with a standard control pad, probably why I don't have any on my PS3.

Maybe a little early, but I needed to be sure...

Mike Tyson's Punch Out [NES]
Game-MikeTysonsPunchOut-NES.jpg

Quick Poll - how many people can vividly remember the first time they beat Tyson? You can count me as one of that group. A simple game (like most things NES), but your 6 moves carried you the entire way...as long as you learned each fighters weakness.
