Don't Make Me Use The Bat
Just an FYI - in trying to keep up with the thread for Kingzrool (in his absence and at his request), we are running out of characters on the post limit on the initial posts of the thread. To combat this, I started by removing some of the albums (leaving the song name and artist only) and when this wasn't sufficient, moving some lists a bit to keep it at 2.5 lists per post maximum, which I think will work just fine. The result is some folks will have their lists split into 2 posts. I think we can all manage to follow along OK, but sorry for any confusion this may be causing. The other lists may or may not have the album names removed as well, but at this point I don't know if it is necessary and I am not going to go do them all now, if at all. I may leave some of that for the commish upon his return. ;)

hmmm...Mr. Hawk. Watch how the crafty old vet mod handles this. ;) (nifty device called copy post)

Glory Days - Bruce Springsteen - Born in the U.S.A.

So in the end this song remains just too much fun for me to leave sitting on the shelf as I head off to my island banishment. Its been described as a combination of rinky-dink organ, honky-tonk piano, garage-band guitar, tom tom drums and just for the hell of it, a mandolin solo, and everybody involved with this just was palpatably having a great time. Its been one of the great party songs at Springsteen concerts for 20 years now. But of course its the lyrics that bite, like so many Springsteen songs. Resonated for me when I was in high school and on that side of the age gap he describes, still resonates all this time later when I would be closer to the sap on the other side of the song. And I suspect would continue to resonate for me on my little island as I dreamt back to a time when I wasn't stuck on some pukey little island with a grand total of 30 songs to listen to for eternity.

Man, decisions, decisions... I narrowed this pick down to five different songs by the Jacksons, or some derivation thereof, and finally settled on:

Blame it on the Boogie - The Jacksons - Destiny - 1978

OK, time for the next instrumental.

From my last pick in Scotland, I am going to San Francisco, but only physically. Culturally, we are taking a trip halfway around the world to Japan for some Taiko drumming:

This is a song from the San Francisco Taiko Dojo:

and while featured on the Rising Sun soundtrack, the best way to hear it is live, which I have several times. Both the San Francisco Taiko Dojo and the Sacramento Taiko Dan are great - catch them if you can. There is no way any recording can do the song Tsunami justice, but I am including it on my list it anyways.

Now Taiko I enjoy, having been introduced to it at a Buddist festival in Marysville a number of years ago...

:)
My dad took us to go see it lots when we were younger, both Taiko and Kodo drumming.

I prefer Taiko to Kodo, based on the performances I have seen. We used to go to UC Davis, San Francisco, and/or Sacramento at least yearly to catch a performance. I haven't been in quite a while, but plan to go again before too long.

I had heard the song live before I saw the movie, and was happy to see some Taiko make it into a "mainstream" flick.

i've said in the past that i'm not a big fan of the newer greenday stuff.. but i still have to say that to date they put on one of the best live shows i've ever seen, they were incredible.

Alright, I need a sad song and I'll pick probably the saddest song of this decade, along with getting myself a second NIN song in a roundabout way.

Hurt - Johnny Cash - American IV: The Man Comes Around

One of the saddest songs I've ever heard in my entire life. The video only makes is a million times worse. Cash is so authentic in it and he does Reznor's song complete justice. I actually favor this version heavily over the original. Reznor seems to too saying shortly after the release of the cover,
"I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore."

Its a beautiful song and will be great for the sad times on my lonely island.

Drat. I guess I should not have waited this long. Great pick.

Pondered that one myself just because of a video. In fact if this had been a music video draft (hey....light bulb *on*...) I would have taken it.

Admittedly, I'm not as big a fan of Fiona Apple as GGG, but I've always had great respect for her talent and artistry, especially in her lyrics. Had a chance to see her live a couple of times and she's great. A lot of artists out there have a hard time convincing their audience that they truly care about their music...but you can tell that every word that comes out of her mouth and every strange gyration of her body is a genuine expression of her life experience and her passion for her music. I'm a big fan of this entire album, but this has always been my favorite track.

Pick #29, and we're winding down TDOS and the desert island drafts. Time marches on, and takes no prisoners. I may be taking a chance by doubling up a couple bands in this draft, but I typically like my mixes to include a couple songs per artist to help transition between genres. This is an old favorite that I forgot about until I went to the library this week and found Pink Floyd's Dark Side o the Moon album...

Pick #29: Time (Pink Floyd) Dark Side of the Moon

I had already considered that but was going to save it for the next DTOS......

Problem is, I have never and still don't see music videos, so I have no basis for participating. I know of a couple good ones, and that is it.....
