A friend of mine posted this on Facebook to honor a relative they lost in Afghanistan. I thought it was moving and incredible and well worth sharing.
"A beautiful tribute written by my cousin, David Jones, for the cousin we just lost in Afghanistan, Corporal Jon-Luke Bateman.
Jon’s Story
On May 26, 1989, I was born the son of Paul and Laura; a free American.
I was 12 when the twin towers came crumbling down and valiant Americans fought for control of United Flight 93
When I became a man, I heard the Call of Duty. Once heard, must be answered.
I was 22 when I fell, giving aid to a fellow marine.
On January 15, 2012, in Afghanistan, while fulfilling my oath to protect the United States from all enemies, foreign or domestic, Freedom and Liberty’s price was exacted once more. Heavy, always paid for with that which is most precious.
As the Lord kneels down to raise me up, I look. Behind, with sorrow, I see my mother, my sister, my brother, family and friends mourning. What was; was to be. Ahead with joy, wonderment, anticipation, I see my father, beckoning me to his arms, smiling, to embrace me. We haven’t spoken in years. It will be good to catch up. The Lord is bright, calming, assuring.
I go where others can or will not
I do what others not dare.
I am sent in first to prepare, make safe the way for others.
I fight, if I must, so that my generation and those to come will not have to.
My brothers and sisters guard our embassies. They protect our President.
I AM A UNITED STATES MARINE!
I AM SEMPER FI! (Always Faithful)
I AM CORPORAL JON-LUKE BATEMAN. A FREE AMERICAN"
