The front line development I would watch

Emma

Starter
Kings pick up Spencer Hawes (assuming they get stuck with 8-10 pick), in the draft and trade Artest and Shareef away (to help some other team stomach taking Kenny thomas off of our hands), and the other team would give us mainly picks and a good, seasoned backup PF.

The Kings start Miller and Williams, play Hawes backup C, letting him develop behind Brad (another offensively gifted center). Keep Corliss and (new backup PF) for developing Justin, and we have a solid offensive / defensive 5 and 4 duo for a long time.

In Artest's spot Francisco Garcia would absolutely flourish. I can picture him as an all star. I can see him being that good.

So basically we are drafting Brad Miller(who Hawes is compared to and plays like) to replace Brad Miller when his contract is up in 3 more years?? Doesn't help us whatsoever and, although I like Justin, I don't think he can be a starter for a full season. Good bench/energy guy.

If Corliss and Hawes are the back-up "bigs" coming off the bench we are in more trouble next year than this year.

Sigh, and while I like what Cisco has been bringing, you wake up one morning and suddenly everybody is convinced this team is just awash in future All Stars. Damn, I don't think we even need a draft pick now that we have Ben Wallace (Justin), Scottie Pippen (Cisco) and A.I. (Price) running around back there along with MJ (Kevin). We're set!

P.S. Hawes does concern me as another Miller type character -- skilled, soft, never win a title. Except he's got an advanced post game, and that's the interesting part.

Since we're talking total rebuild, I'll give it a shot.

I think we might get as high a pick as 6 or 7, but for purposes of equal pessimism I'll assume that we get #8 and that Hibbert, Noah and Jianlian aren't options, either because they're already going to be gone or for some other reason.

We trade down and get more lower picks, let's say either Thabeet or Splitter in the first round (choose your favorite, I don't micromanage fantasies), and someone like Stephane Lasme (think Justin, + a little extra upper body strength, - an inch in height, with more developed offensive skills) in the second. We hire Vlade Divac as big man coach, and tell him to bust his butt for a year making our two rookies + Justin into complete players, and learning how to be a head coach. We hire Rudy Tomjanovich as head coach for one year only, knowing that he doesn't want to stress out with a long-term return to coaching, and have him spend most of his time training Vlade to be our head coach for '08-'09 and beyond. Winning or losing games would not be a concern, just training. Any time he felt like sitting back and letting Vlade coach, that would be allowed. Almost more like a consultant position than a conventional head coach position, because that's all we'd need, and that's probably all he'd be willing to do.

We sign Corliss to a cheap 1-2 year contract, with the understanding that he joins the coaching staff when it is over. A written understanding, if that helps him to decide.

We dump what other vets we can, for whatever short contracts we can get, and try to pick up a little cap space in the process. With a ton of luck, we can afford to sign Mo Williams and have some change left over. Otherwise, we start saving up for contract extensions for Kevin Martin and the younger kids, and pick up a good PG in next year's guard-heavy draft. Any vets we can't move should be prepared to sit quite a bit. If that includes KT, we buy out his contract rather than let him be a bad influence on the kids.

I know, it's a fairy tale, some part or another probably wouldn't be feasible. But that's the sort of change I see needed on the team, and all of these personnel threads are fairy tales anyway.

I was hoping for a PF to be brought in via trade. That would be William's backup. I know it's thrusting Justin into the fire, but now or never I say!

Corliss would backup Garcia at the 3. And I compare Hawes to the big guy that used to play for Portland who was from Europe. First name Arvydas.

P.S. Hawes does concern me as another Miller type character -- skilled, soft, never win a title. Except he's got an advanced post game, and that's the interesting part.

What's most interesting about it is that it seems you can find long, athletic guys to bounce around, grab boards and swat at layups. It's a bit more difficult to find one who knows how to play with his back to the basket. Of course, Hawes isn't refined as an offensive player, but he's certainly not raw like Dwight Howard, Kwame Brown or Tyson Chandler.

If we're not going to have Brad Miller around next year, I'd like to see us have a guy like Spencer Hawes complementing a guy like Justin Williams. They're not going to win us any titles in the next two or three years, but they might be valuable when it comes time for us to trade for a major piece.

Deep Trouble

If Cisco and Corliss are gonna be our small forward combo for next year we are in deep trouble. Cisco an all star? huh? wow I love the kings but some people need to take glasses off and realize that our roster is not even close to being in the upper tier.

With what I've heard (I've never seen him play) about his footwork, Post skills and high post play he is cross between Brad Miller and Chris Kamen(without the shot blocking)

I don't want another Brad Miller...

It's good to look at why we ever got a Brad Miller in the first place. Petrie's vision of the all-passing, all-shooting team. In that context he made total sense, especially with Vlade approaching retirement, and it was a great move by GP.

Now, it doesn't make sense. SAR, KT, Justin, Corliss, and Artest don't fit well with that, and a couple of the others are uncertain. If we're going to go back to that style, we have to replace most of our roster. If we're not, then another Brad wouldn't be properly utilized. A pass-first PG would.

It's all context, and I have no idea what Geoff is planning. If it's Sac Kings 1.1, Hawes would be fine, but the efforts needed to rebuild would be huge. If it's Sac Kings 2.0, I'd lean strongly towards someone more like Hibbert.

I do like that idea as I think Vlade has what it takes to be a very very good coach. And Rudy T is as good a mentor as we could get for Vlade.

However, I somehow don't see Vlade giving up his job as a GM of basketball operations at Real Madrid to become a coach. He seems to be enjoying his time at RM and his role there. I am not sure coaching is really what Vlade would want to do.

I'm really hoping we go BPA this year, and have a hard time envisioning a scenario where Hawes is the BPA when we select.

I wouldn't have thought so either, but when he was on KHTK during one of the Kings-Lakers games, he was saying that he wanted his kids attending college in the US, he wanted to be near them, etc... he was definitely fishing for a job.

I hope he's at least asked. We really need a new coach, and one day we'll need a new GM.

Hawes is probably alot closer to Vlade than Brad Miller. But not an issue now, I forgot about Hibbert! I would take him if he were available. But now we're talking about something completely against Petrie's grain. My original plan at the top is probably likely to happen (for the most part).

But I will still defend my Francisco as an all star statement. Purple glasses heckling be damned! 30+ minutes per game and I guarantee you 18 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals.

ditto x 100

i can't take another year of a soft center that doesn't offer any protection at the rim..

Also a PG in Bibby as porous as Niagara Falls along with a soft Center.....this equals to the red carpet treatment to the rim. This should only be true of the Oscars and other movie/music awards, not in basketball. :p

I hated the Detroit Pistons at the time because I was a big time Bulls fan, but they repeatedly sent Jordan to the floor when he tried driving to the hoop, no easy uncontested baskets!!!! :p

Not now or never, I meant to say sooner than later:o, (regarding Justin starting). Oops.

BUT did anyone notice I dang near predicted Francisco's line earlier in the thread? NO...

So against Golden State he racked up 16 pts, 7 reb, 5 assists and a steal I'm pretty sure. I was just one off on buckets and steals. Iknow, I'm good. So I think that Francisco starting isn't such a problem now huh?

OK, I'll go with you on SOONER rather than LATER.

But let's let the kid grow up just a bit longer, before we throw him in the middle of the lake to see if he can swim.
