The End of Small Ball

All-Star
The end of small ball for this team can be virtually eliminated by as soon as next season.

Let me go into detail, the Kings have an opportunity to add some "big" pieces before next season and get rid of some "small" ones.

I like Fredette as a basketball player, but he doesn't fit the mold of any particular position. He is a fantastic shooter but lacks the size to play out on the wing. So he is limited to guarding the smaller players on the opposing team. Unfortunately these players are usually the quickest players on the court and speed, quickness, and the ability to stay in front of a man are weaknesses in Jimmer's game. I think we should try and trade him before the trade deadline this year. We could package him with our other two players who supposively have good potential but have just dissapointed here in Sacramanto. Of course I'm talking about Hickson and Greene.

I think trading for another PG would be a good idea. Thomas is not doing as well as a starter than he was coming off the bench. This leads us to believe that he is perfect for that sixth man role. So what PG do we go after with that package of 3 players? I vote Bayless. He is an extremely athletic PG with great size. He is a good 3pt shooter and can distribute the ball at a 2-to-1 assist to turnover ratio. He is also a good defender who has the potential to stay in front of any man because of his athleticism. He will most certainly be an upgrade on the defensive side when compared to Jimmer.

So the deal would be:

Fredette
Hickson
Greene

for

Bayless
Magloire

This trade will give the Raptors a rotation that looks like this:

PG - Calderon/Fredette/Carter
SG - DeRozan/Barbosa
SF - Kleiza/Greene/Butler
PF - Davis/Hickson/J. Johnson
C - Bargnani/A. Johnson/Gray/Alabi

They have some nice pieces in their starting lineup already, but this trade will give them depth at every position, and with another early lottery pick on the way and the progression of their young players, they will be a very competitive team next year.

In the end if we are to amnesty Salmons, draft a big man, and sign Batum, Chandler, or Kirilenko, small ball will be no more.

PG - Bayless 6'3" / Thomas 5'9"
SG - Evans 6'6" / Thornton 6'4" / Garcia 6'7"
SF - Batum 6'8" / Honeycutt 6'8" / Outlaw 6'9"
PF - Thompson 6'11" / Rookie Big Man 6'9"-6'11" / Hayes 6'6"
C - Cousins 6'11" / Whiteside 7'0"

Our only undersized player would be Thomas and Hayes.

Darn...given the thread title I was so hoping for more. :p

I generally thought that the last of the Bayless backers had died off in the Late Paleozoic.

Setting that aside, the only part of "smallball' this would even attempt to address is IT starting, and franly givne how Bayless has played, IT might STILL start. Furthermore given Smart's preferences at SF, Reke could easily stil be there now alongside Bayless and Thornton, which means we'd still be small.

By the way, just throwing this out there -- Beno is unhappy in Milwaulkee, not producing much, and they might not mind being free of his contract. If we offered them one of our young gguys -- any of the ones in this deal for instance, I wouldn't be horrendously surprised if Milwaulkee wouldn't just give us back our guard. Be a lot less trouble than package deals chasing this unproven guy or that unproven guy.

I didn't say this season. Please read the entire post next time.

If anything you gave Smart reason to start Tyreke at his natural PF position...
Bayless, IT, MT, Reke, DMC - might be a dream come true

Might need to switch Reke and DMC there. Since DMC has the better midrange game, might as well just put Reke under the basket and have him guard center. After all, layups are all he's good for, right?;)

Would love Beno back because IMHO Beno - Reke - Thornton was a really strong 3 guard rotation that we could roll out every game. Not many teams have 3 guards that just mesh well together. Beno's beauty was that he could play off the ball and still be effective. His stop and pop was great and he provided team with veteran presence and direction. Something we are really missing this year.

I would get him back in a second but its burning up cap space and creating one heck of a mess in the backcourt which would need to be cleared.

Can we just trade Salmons for Beno and be done with it?!

We need to stop worrying about our guards and finally get a DECENT small forward. Yes Salmons backfired, yes we ran after AK47...but we lost out on Battier, Prince and a few others that would have probably rounded out our lineup TONS better than the 5-6 man SF group we have.
