The Build Your Own Kings Team Game

Bricklayer

Don't Make Me Use The Bat
I've seen this format used elsewhere. Thought it would be an amusing time waster while we wait for Gerbil to dazzle us.

Here's the simple rules. You have $15. Choose one C, one PF, one SF, one SG, and one PG from the following lists to make the best all time Sacramento Kings team you can for $15 or less. Then post your team so that everybody else can tell you why theirs is better. :)

All players based on best years as a King, not remainder of career.

Centers
$5 Demarcus Cousins
$4 Vlade Divac
$3 Brad Miller
$2 LaSalle Thompson
$1 Olden Polynice

Power Forwards
$5 Chris Webber
$4 Otis Thorpe
$3 Wayman Tisdale
$2 Brian Grant
$1 Jason Thompson

Small Forwards
$5 Peja Stojakovic
$4 Ron Artest
$3 Rudy Gay
$2 Lionel Simmons
$1 Eddie Johnson

Shooting Guards
$5 Mitch Richmond
$4 Kevin Martin
$3 Reggie Theus
$2 Doug Christie
$1 Marcus Thornton

Point Guards
$5 Mike Bibby
$4 Tyreke Evans
$3 Jason Williams
$2 Spud Webb
$1 Kenny Smith

Example:
$3 Brad Miller
$2 Brian Grant
$4 Ron Artest
$5 Mitch Richmond
$1 Kenny Smith
---------
$15

$5 Demarcus Cousins
$2 Brian Grant
$2 Lionel Simmons
$5 Mitch Richmond
$1 Kenny Smith
------------------
$15

DMC is a no brainer: young and already one of the most talented player in a position where talented players are rare.
Mitch is the second letal weapon : all-around 2 ways player and, of course, his shooting completes well with DMC.
Kenny Smith is a PG who can pass and shoot and is cheap. I don't think he is much less talented than Bibby.
Brian Grant is the physical/hustle/defensive inside player next to DMC.
Lionel Simmons at SF because... well... I had no choice ;-)

$1 Kenny Smith
$2 Doug Christie
$2 Lionel Simmons
$5 Chris Webber
$5 DeMarcus Cousins

Pretty easy team to pick for me. Could have gone a couple different ways, maybe have Mitch or Ron in there, but just too much to pass up on the two best players in our history playing together up front in Cuz and CWebb. Then you have Simmons and Christie being physical defenders on the perimiter, with Kenny being a good scorer (18ppg) and distributor (7apg) at point.

Could argue that balance is off with two best players operating in the post, but I don't care. It'd be the best frontcourt in the NBA and both are excellent passers, they could make it work.

Interesting game btw.

Divac 4
CWebb 5
EJ 1
Christie 2
JWill 3

Tis team will share the ball, EJ is a good value at SF, got the most dominant player on the board in CWebb....the toughest decision came down to Cuz and Divac.....still not sure on that

D-Fence! D-Fence! D-Fence!

LaSalle Thompson $2
Brian Grant $2
Ron Artest $4
Doug Christie $2
Tyreke Evans $4

This team isn't winning any championships. And Ron-Ron would probably stab someone with an ice skate. But that's about as hard-nosed, blue-collar as you're gonna get with an All-Kings line-up.

And I even have an extra dollar for The Animal and Keon Clark to split to come off the bench.

There's a lot of different ways to go here. Webber or Cousins is the first choice. The depth at C is pretty weak and I don't want to get stuck with one of the cheaper options so I'd start off with Cousins in the middle. Brian Grant looks like the best compliment to Cousins by far, and a bit of a bargain, so he fills out my frontcourt. I'm tempted to go with the Rock and get my scoring handled right off the bat, but Doug Christie is there for $2 and one of my all time favorite Kings so I'm investing in my perimeter D with DC. With $6 left to split between PG and SF I ran down the permutations -- offensive flash with JWill and Rudy, smash-mouth ball with Reke and Simmons, outside shooting with Mike and Eddie. I love prime Artest's two way game but I'm not rolling with Spudd as my primary point. In the end I settled for offensive spacing and went with everyone's favorite sweet shooting Serbian and the original Jet who turned himself into a pretty solid shooter as well and is probably the best bargain on the board for only $1.

DeMarcus Cousins $5
Brian Grant $2
Peja Stojakovic $5
Doug Christie $2
Kenny Smith $1

I did come up with an alternative lineup I like a lot as well though using the three All-Star front line of Artest/Webber/Miller and the same Smith/Christie backcourt. I think the first lineup is a little better balanced though and harder to stop offensively.

DeMarcus Cousins $5 (Because he is TheMan)
Brian Grant $2 (Best Value Off/Def for $2)
Rudy Gay $3 (Better than Artest for cheap)
Kevin Martin $4 (Best shooter to spread floor for Cuz/Gay)
Kenny Smith $1 (Ran out of money LOL)

$4 Vlade
$5 CWebb
$3 Rudy Gay
$2 Doug Christie
$1 Kenny Smith

This felt easy. Vlade + CWebb plus any three guys is a damn good team so this is the easy part.

Comes down to either Artest and Thornton, or Gay and Christie. I was the biggest Artest fan in Sac through thick and thin, but DC can be my lock down defender.. I cannot afford to have Marcus Thornton on any kind of "dream/fantasy team".

I have 3/5 of the prime time Kings dream team and only need Rudy and Kenny to not completely screw things up.

What do I win for getting this right?

C-Divac-$4
PF-Webber-$5
SF-Johnson-$1
SG-Christie-$2
PG-Smith-$1

Then i use my remaining $2 on Brian Grant as a 3rd big off the bench.

Cousins - $5
Webber - $5
Simmons - $2
Christie - $2
Smith - $1

This wasn't too hard for me.
Cousins has the ability to be the league's best Big.
Webber was certainly in consideration for the league's best PF.

So I go with big man domination combined with great passing, great mid-range floor spacing, and decent defense from my two bigs.

Shooting guard was also easy as I loved Christie especially with his ability to facilitate and lock down the perimeter. I'm thrilled he came so cheap.

That left me with little money to spare and I went with Smith and Simmons (though I could have gone with Johnson for some outside scoring punch...which might be the better play here.)

So I lack outside shooting punch if I go with Simmons, but I have good-to-great passing from all 5 positions as well as absolute domination in the post. I'll take it.

I have to say I'm surprised at people not just picking the two best players in our franchise's history. Grant is a better fit next to Cuz than Webber, but Cuz/Webber is still a better frontcourt.

Thing is, we've seen Vlade/CWebb work the passing big man magic. A known quantity. It is a crap shoot how CWebb/DMC would gel on the court and in the locker room. CWebb would be jealous of how DMC knocks down that elbow J for example. I do think DMC will be hanging from the rafters in the new ESC some day, but Vlade for a dollar cheaper was easy.

I should say that if I go with Cousins as my Franchise guy and then decide to not go with Webber, but to go with Grant instead which looks to be the best value for the best fit, then my team would look like this:

Cousins - $5
Grant - $2
Johnson - $1
Christie - $2
Tyreke - $4
With a dollar left over.

I've got the dominant Big in Cousins, the Slasher in Tyreke, the Floor Spacer in Johnson. I have that perfect fit next to Tyreke in Christie, and that great fit next to Cousins in Grant.
I've got great perimeter defense in Tyreke and Christie and great rebounding in the interior in Cousins and Grant.

I'd still take the Cousins/Webber combination over this one...just due to how dominant a pairing that would be.

It's really just about the prices. Webber/Cousins leaves you with limited options to fill the remaining three spots on your roster. Christie and Grant are both ideal role-player types which makes them easy picks for me at $2 each. I know I'm getting solid production with those two guys so I can splurge at a different position. Also, if I'm going to have two 20 point scorers in the lineup I'd rather have one in the post and one at the three point line where they can compliment each other. Webber and Cousins in the post is a lot of talent but they also do a lot of the same things and I could see them stepping on each other's toes as they go for the same rebounds and try to establish position in the same high post and low post positions.

Cousins - $5
Webber - $5
Johnson- $1
Theus - $3
Smith - $1

Great game. This team will be poor defensively but they will absolutely fill it up.

Too soon to put Cuz amongst the two best players in franchise history. Mitch was a great 2 guard.

I think this would be mine as well. Gotta go with Cousins and Webber to dominate around the rim. DC was one of my favorites and provides awesome D on the perimeter. After that it was just filling in the last couple spots as best as possible.

Haven't looked at any of the above picks.

My pickd are:
$4 Divac
$3 Tisdale
$2 Simmons
$5 Richmond
$1 Smith

Please enail congratulations to:

$3 Brad Miller
$5 Chris Webber
$4 Ron Artest
$2 Doug Christie
$1 Kenny Smith

I actually feel pretty confident fielding this team. For $5, it would be between CWebb and DMC. Both fit similar roles, but the PFs after Chris weren't as enticing as the Centers you could pick up after DMC. Peak Sacramento Brad Miller was actually a really great player. I picked Ron and Doug for the shutdown perimeter defense and solid shooting. Hoping for Kenny Smith just to distribute with so many mouths to feed.

I'm actually surprised Ainge wasn't on the list as a PG or SG.

True, I maybe should have put him in there for the $1 SG instead of Thornton to give a more legit option, but I was staying with big longterm guys.

Maybe making the $1PG either IT or somebody interesting like BJax would have given people pause as well.

If you had put Bobby downs as a $1 option i would have been all over that as he was my favorite player. Although i thought Kenny Smith was a very good bargain at $1. The guy was solid player who knew his role , a 2x champion, shot a very good FG% and a fantastic 3pt FG% and he could facilitate the offense. Not to mention he was a big PG who could also play D. He and Christie in the back court at $3 total is a steal.

I'd go with these 5:

Cousins 5
Webber 5
Simmons 2
Christie 2
Smith 1

C-Webb and Cuz have to be on my team. It's hard not to put Vlade in there, but I'd pick these 5.

You may be thinking of somebody else if you are accusing Kenny "The Jet" of playing D. :)
