State-of-the-Kings: one fans view :D

OK, here IS our inventory as of Monday morning, 26 September:

The Starters
Mike Bibby, PG
Bonzi Wells, SG
Brad Miller, C
Pedja, SF
Sharif Abdur-Rahim, PF

The Bench
PG - Jason Hart, Ronnie Price
SG - Kevin Martin, Francisco Garcia
C - Brian Skinner, Jamal Sampson
PF - Kenny Thomas
SF - Corliss Williamson, ???

Songaila is now with the Bulls and Barnes has disappeared off the radar.

Question marks
So we have Sampson, Thomas and Skinner behind Abdur-Rahim and Miller. Pedja plus maybe Cisco at SF leaves us a bit short for mid-long range shooters. PG, SG and C (Miller, Skinner) seem set.

Our budget is maxed out and Maloofs didn't want to pay luxury tax this year. So we have 13 contracts (all but Sampson guaranteed and not including Barnes) now somewhere above ($61M !!!). And Petrie is on record in the Bee on 8/25 saying he only wants 13 on active roster. hmmm.

Point Guard with Bibby and now Jason Hart plus Ronnie Price should be solid plus training camp adding Luis Flores.

Shooting Guard Bonzi will be the starting SG. Super K! :D and Garcia, who looked really good (awesome on defense) in summer league, will back up and both are 6-7. Plus the 6-4 Ricky Pauling, more a ? than anything.

Center is set with Miller. Skinner may be #1 off the bench and he can run and defend some. The 3 new bigs (or rather the "talls") in pre-season camp present an interesting situation. Literally 3 more Skinner types

Power Forward We now have an all-star starting PF. Seems we really need a big man, a banger-rebounder-defender who can be a 4 or 5. Skinner can do some of that but he is tall and skinny and short on offense but he could. The 3 "talls" in training camp are just like Skinner, tall and skinny as well as being unknown.

Small Forward Peja is the man. Garcia, Martin and Bonzi can all slide over depending on match ups. Corliss is a PF is a small body (he is only 6-6 tops) but cannot keep up with most SF in the west. He is a real enigma, too small for a PF, too slow for a SF but dependable, a banger and fearless but is $6M. We still need a reliable, veteran 3-pt shooter-scorer here (Dan Langhi maybe???)

This year teams will carry a minimum of 13 (max of 15) on active rosters with no IR or Injured Reserve (this year those will be "inactive" players). So one or maybe two from training camp have a slight shot. and teams may be able to "stash" a player or two on the NBDL!?

I'm starting to think there is no trade left. Because who is out there?

Training camp opens in 8 days!!!

ya know, a state-of-the-kings sticky might not be a bad idea, to chronicle any off-season moves made. cuz, while this is the state of the kings for the moment, it may not be that way next week. who knows what GP will do? and it would help if we didn't have a million threads going about each move that GP makes (and i believe there will be a few).

Although I don't know if we'll have anything to update right away, I think it's a good idea. And, since CruzDude went to all this trouble and all, I figured might as well use his as the "OFFICIAL State-of-the-Kings thread".

That's right, it would take over 26 bowls of Special K to equal the nutrition found in one milligram of new genetically engineered Super K!

Well, sorta... I was actually quoting someone else, however:

Hopefully, the real value of the thread will come once Petrie starts working all his magic. You know, so we'll be able to follow all the intricate trades, amazing free agency signings, etc. that are going to take our Kings right back to the thick of the hunt for the BIG prize.

Part of my youth was spent growing up in Southern California on the ocean. (Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, Surfaris SoCal....yes, I AM old!) Among the surfers this is where I first became aquainted with said word. (I don't know whether I should frown or smile over that one...good grief that was a long time ago!)

Here's the up-to-date roster, pending contract signing as soon as the CBA is approved:

PG - Bibby
SG - Wells/Martin/Garcia
SF - Peja/Corliss
PF - Thomas/Corliss
C - Brad/Skinner

Qualifying offers made: Mo Evans, Darius Songaila

Looks like the Kings need to add a " / " or two after Bibby's name.

The Kings also need a back-up for either Peja or Thomas, but most preferablly Thomas. Actually a PF in front of him is hte best option.

This seems like a team that will produce some exciting game, but not championship contenders. In fact with the way Golden state was playing at the end of the year, and what is likely to be the reemergence of the lakers(I'm not saying that they'll be anywhere near as good as they were with shaq, but they'll likely contend for the playoffs) - along with a healthy utah squad - it's going to be difficult to make the playoffs.

And the latest:

PG - Bibby/Hart
SG - Wells/Martin/Garcia
SF - Peja/Corliss
PF - Thomas/Corliss
C - Brad/Skinner

Qualifying offers made: Mo Evans, Darius Songaila

Looks about right, but I think it should look more like this:

Bibby/Hart
Wells/Martin/Garcia
Peja/Corliss
Thomas/Skinner
Brad

Of course with Adelman, it could possibly end up like this:

Bibby/Hart
Wells/Hart
Peja/Martin/Garcia
Thomas/Skinner
Brad/Corliss

;)

I see it like this.
Bibby....He was a great fit in the Kings system. Sorry, That system no longer exists.
Wells....Coming from Memphis via the headcase full Trailblazers.
Peja..... Good player on the right team. Is this one it. I hope so . But I doubt it.
Thomas-Skinner. Skinner, if he had a reliable offensive game, would be a really good player. Thomas...Just a chameleon(sp) A floater trying to fit into a system. Good skills, but too small and not tough enough to be a go to PF (unless you want to settle for an outside shot).
Miller....Yea , I liked him too. He brought some fight to us when we didn't have it. He was all over the floor going for those loose balls. That is a nice quality. But who knows if taht will play out in this new unknown system.
Skinner...Very tough guy...Gave it all he had...Injuries to his hands, finger, and thumb parts made him less than he could have been...However , as much as we all liked him and his toughness, he had no NBA offense.
I am just making observations based on watching my team for many years.
I am not sure what kind of team to expect this fall. I will of course watch every game possible.
But in my mind, this seems to be a period of transition unlike any other in recent Kings history.
I feel like the ownership has let us all down with the dealings of the last year or so. And we (at least me) as Kings(a) fan(s) are(am) trying to make some sense of it all in our(my) minds.

As it stands right now:

PG - Bibby/Hart/Price
SG - Wells/Martin/Garcia
SF - Peja/Corliss
PF - Thomas/Skinner
C - Brad

Qualifying offers made: Mo Evans, Darius Songaila

Might look like this now with Rick's 8 man rotations:

Bibby/Hart
Wells/Hart
Stojakovic/Thomas
Rahim/Thomas
Miller/Skinner

with brief flashes of Martin.

Actually, take out Skinner... Stojakovic will play a lot of minutes and Hart, Bibby and Wells will play together when he is out, then Abdur-Rahim or Thomas will play center when Miller is out.
