Sometimes being pedantic can be a real pain in the arse, especially to older people with failing memories who are sharing their remembrances of times past. ;)

Before the 24 hour news cycle and the internet none of that mattered much. You got the games when they were on and you'd really have to go out of your way to get spoiled.

The Miracle on Ice game was NOT shown live on the East Coast. As I stated in my previous post, I watched the game in the Washington DC area, and the local newsperson ruined things for a lot of people by announcing the result during the break between the 2nd and 3rd periods.

Oh so nice in Alpine Men's Super Giant Slalom - American's win silver metal plus bronze metal and you probably wouldn't guess who or in what order finished. Just watched it live with Comcast online feed.

I'll admit that I didn't get up in the middle of the night to see it, but was happy to see that USA beat Russia in mens hockey. It reminds me of my ...

Great Moment in Watching TV With the Sound Off

I watch a lot of sports on TV with the sound off. I've found I can usually do without the announcers, and it doesn't drive my wife nuts. Sound is ON for Kings games and other important moments, of course.

In 1980, the Miracle on Ice game was played in the afternoon and then shown on tape delay in prime time. I was living in the DC area at the time. I made a point of avoiding any news sources so I wouldn't know how the game came out when I watched it (easier to do in those days). The USA was down a goal at the end of the 2nd period. I remember looking up and seeing the local newsperson teasing the 11:00 news between periods, but since I had the sound off I didn't hear her announce 'amazing hockey upset, details at 11:00'. As a result, I got to have the thrill of the tying goal early in the 3rd, Mike Eruzione's game winner with 10 minutes to go, sweating through the longest 10 minutes of a game EVER, and the joy of Al Michaels' 'Do you believe in miracles?' at the end. There was a huge furor the next day about the newsperson giving away the result.
I remember watching the entire game on the edge of my seat. I was 9 years old and didn't understand hockey very well, but enjoyed every minute.

Shani who? He is he most recognizable of our long distance skaters but none of them have won a medal and this is two distances by our best. They are blaming it on the suits. The suits hadn't been tested indoors. Give me a break. If someone knows how the skating suit can lead to the temporary demise of an entire long distance skating program, let me know the theory. It is a curiosity as the world's best doesn't suddenly skate like he has kryptonite in his suit.

They took Shani off suicide watch and interviewed him. He said that the suit couldn't make a 1/2 sec difference and although he didn't say it outright, very clearly blamed himself.

This is one of the disciplines I have looked forward to because of Shani. Wow!

I heard that air is catching in the back of the suit, slowing them down. Who knows. I can't believe they weren't allowed to try them out prior to the Olympics.

I'm not as down as Shani but then I haven't spent the last 4 years practicing my ass off only to not only come up short but come up WAY short. The program needs some serious introspection and I am already looking forward to 4 years from now.

Can we have some version of the Olympics yearly? There is something about the atmosphere that makes it more "noble" than other events. To a certain extent, I can drop national pride and look at the stories within the stories. For instance, Victor Ahn (sp?) can't get on the South Korean short skating team so he gets Russian citizenship and wins a gold. He even changed his first name to fit in better in Russia. That's a hearty FU isn't it? :) I hope I didn't screw up the story but a South Korean (our traditional ally) moving to Russia (our traditional enemy) truly transcends this nationalistic and even political BS to a certain extent. I throw in "to a certain extent" as my nationalism will always lend a little more volume to my screaming at the tv.

Hey, the Philippines has its first Winter Olympics competitor!! Yowza.

There were vents on the back of the suits that were supposed to provide a way for heat to escape from the suits. A number of the skaters complained that what they did was fill with air, acting as a drag and slowing them down. There was more to the report, but unfortunately I fell asleep.

Thanks. That makes sense. What doesn't make sense is any athlete valuing being cooled down at the cost of speed. It is utter stupidity that these suits weren't tested indoors. I feel sorry for the athletes. Shani is extremely good and this Olympics, up to this point, has been flushed down the drain for him. I don't know how many more events they have but certainly they can change their suits.

Interview with Bode Miller pretty tacky. Can't believe NBC actually showed the whole thing even on tape delay.
That was arguably the most uncomfortable interview I've ever seen...almost as insensitive as the Sacramento reporter years ago who put a microphone into a grieving woman's face and asked her how she felt knowing her husband had not gotten out of their burned-out shell of a home.

Where does it rank on the Jim Grey/Pete Rose scale?
Much more painful. The reporter just kept hammering away at Bode, asking him over and over if he was feeling his brother's presence, how he thought his brother would feel, if he (Bode) was communicating with his brother before the race when he looked skyward, etc. Bode slowly but inexorably lost his composure completely, walked a few steps away from the interviewer and crumbled to his knees, head down, obviously totally distraught.

“You’re showing so much emotion down here,” Cooper said. “What’s going through your mind?”

“A lot, obviously,” Miller said. “A long struggle coming in here, and just a tough year.”

Cooper then asked him about his brother a few more times as Miller became emotional and struggled to respond. He finally put his head down and ended the interview. Cameras followed him as he walked away and knelt down, sobbing, before being comforted by his wife.

It seems inconceivable that we can be so bad at curling; you would think that we'd have kidnapped some Canadians by now.

Are there any other Olympic events that we are this non-competitive at?

Long track skating. The tie breaker goes to the number of medals that could have been won. In curling, they can win 2. I have only a guess that in long track skating they could have won 30 but even if I'm wrong which I am sure will be pointed out to me the idea is clear.

I thought the interview of Bode was great. Other famous interviews like the one with Rose were a blindside and had nothing to do with the event he was attending. This interview of Bode put words to what the normally taciturn Bode was thinking and I will bet money there was a part of him that was relieved that people knew what this race meant to him. A man cries in public. Is that so awful? The interview helped me understand Bode's Olympic experience.

We will have to agree to totally disagree on this part. Once Bode was unable to speak and close to collapse, the reporter should have stepped away. She didn't and IMHO she crossed a very big line. It wasn't about Bode crying. It was about how he was reduced to tears of sorrow when he had just won an Olympic medal. Cooper pushed and pushed and pushed until she got him to break down. That's deplorable.

I knew you would disagree and I don't understand when you will admit that you are wrong. ;) That's a joke in case anyone got confused. These are opinions. It's a difficult situation and whether it went across a border or not is our difference. Anyway, I read these notes prior to sticking my nose in and and didn't realize he had won a medal. That made a huge difference as far as I'm concerned. I originally thought he was being attacked after losing. Somehow the fact he medaled took most of the sting out of it for me considering he had screwed up in his first race. People cry for a variety of reasons when they win. We just never know why.

I don't even think it is on the Grey/Rose scale and I could look at it in two ways. Grey/Rose was a tasteless ambush question while Bode's questions were at least related to the emotion of the moment. From the VF21 side, Rose could fight back if he wished. I think the difference in views of VF21 and I may be connected to the idea that Bode was defenseless and I don't think he was at all. He eventually walked away and did what a lot of winners do. He was crying. He could have walked away at anytime yet in my view seemed willing to stand there and dig into the emotions of the moment. The fact I played the questioner role on a daily basis effects my view, to be sure. I'd love to hear what he though of it in retrospect. I don't have to ask Pete Rose what he thought. Grrrr!!

We have a pretty rich history in long track skating. Who knows what went wrong this year. As fun as it would be to blame under armour I doubt that is the case.

Curling, well we've always pretty much sucked. One thing I noticed is our teams seem quite a bit older, especially on the female side where many teams are dominated by 20 somethings (very attractive 20 somethings, I might add). But why are our guys (and gals) shot %s in the 30s and 40s when others are 80+? We're like the Jamaican Bobsled team of curling except way less cool.
