Given Reke and Cousins we actually should run an iso heavy offense to tell you the truth. People went Dirk crazy a few years back, but it was just that, crazy, Dirk was never an elite shotmaker on his own. If Dirk were here, you'd want to put a major playmaker next to him, same way you would with Peja. When Reke is your guy, or Cousins, its the exact opposite. In a lot of ways Johnson would fit betetr here than he ever did with Deron. And Deron would fit better with Dirk than he did with Johnson. Different theory/class of players.

What in the bloody barnacles are you talking about? Dirk was never an elite shotmaker on his own? Have you gone crazy?

Dirk, for the better part of the last decade, was/has been one of the top iso players in the NBA and I could make an incredibly strong argument for him being the best overall offensive player in the last 10 years.

But invoking Peja was probably a bit unfair. Old habit from around here.

The difference is this: he's not a ballhandler. Soembody needs ot do it for him. Unlike Peja, what Dirk did do was eventually become a deadly high post type pleyre. Get him to his spots and he was deadly. but somebody has to do the getting, and somebody has to do the feeding once he's there. You don't jsut hand it to Dirk as soon as you cross halfcourt and say go make something happen. You have Dirk get to hsi spots, then you go and deliver the ball to him. Then you clear out (hence why its unfair to compare that to Peja -- we are talking iso there, but aided iso, Peja neded to be set up to the moment he shot). By the time you reach a Tyreke you are talking about a guy who you just hand the ball too, and he takes care fot he rest. He gets to his spot, then he makes his move. I don't think Dirk in his later career truly needs a Deron, but I think a Deron can still make things easier for him. Set him up, in rhythm, in his spots. Not so much with a guy like Reke. Reke is clsoer to Deron himself than he is to a Dirk. You give him the ball, he finds his own spots. Hence a coach who likes to have players who can run isos liek that is possibly a natural fit.

That kinda sounds like Shaq doesn't it? Just get him the ball in his spots and he'll go to work. Arguably the same can be said for any dominant big man, because bigs just don't bring the ball up themselves. And even Pooh Jeter could bring the ball up and toss it to Shaq (or in this case Dirk). Not much real "setting up" required if you ask me.
