Don't Make Me Use The Bat

ratehr annoyingly lost a long post when I got automatically logged out after...30 min? Something like that. Started it, went to do some work, came back t complete it, and in the interim has been auto logged out. I'm sure that's for server load, but don't know why the sever load should be any greater iwth the new software than the old, and that was highly annoying. It can be countered just by copying the post before hitting submit just in case the software boots you, but hopefully there is a toggle to extend things to a more reaosnable time period?

BTW guys I happen to think this new look is completely hideous and has all the warmth and personality of a dentist office lobby, but as I understood the issue there was no choice but to turn things over because the older software was becoming obsolete and wasn't going to be supported much longer. I'm sure with some work -- a LOT of work -- everything will begin to look better. Probably.

I hope. :p

Will take a bit of getting used to. Not really digging the colors but I am sure the features this board adds is nicer than the last?

LOL, I was feeling the same thing. I also think there is to much dead space everywhere.

What's wrong with the smileys? They look a little bit blurry.
Yeah, they're kind of sucky and indistinct. You can barely tell that winkey-guy in winking: ;)

I seem to remember a previous software upgrade where the look was initially not so great, but it all got tweaked and spiffed up over time. I'm sure Jeremy will do the same as he has time.

The current "theme" is the default installation. There are many customizations that can be done and I'll be working on them in the upcoming weeks (probably starting with the colors). I've addressed a couple of issues so far; the Google ad was moved down below the header so that it doesn't block the site logo on smaller resolutions, and the latest threads were added back to the right column of the home page.

If you're having trouble staying logged in or having things marked as read at strange times there is probably a cookie issue (I've seen this before after past upgrades). To fix this, log in and then log out. You should see a message about cookies being cleared. Then log back in and make sure the "Remember Me" box is checked, that should prevent you from being logged out after 30 minutes. If you're having problems you have to log out to clear the cookies or the remember me box will not have any effect.

Anything else that isn't working please let me know.

Like the new look so far. However, for the visually challenged (or older crowd?) the basic light blue shade of the basic text is harder to see. I can see it but I have to work harder to do that. Keep on tweeking it. Thanks.

I'm still adjusting. It all just seems to blend together and float around a little, still, for me, but I have some perception issues that I have to wear lenses for. Is it okay to request that the boldness of the lines around the bottoms and sides of post boxes be increased or that they are darkened (probably better to darken them)?

I realize I'm just one guy, and I am really not that special, but I think it would return some of that old magic :) .

All in all, I think the change is fine, but I have to agree. My old eyes are finding it a little harder to read. Sometimes there just isn't enough contrast. That lack of enough contrast applies to the post areas, as well as some shades of fonts.

I know you are getting to things as you have time, Jeremy. No pressure from me. I think I'll like the change overall.

I've gotten used to most of the changes already. I don't mind the changes at all. I'm still stuck in quick reply mode all the time though, has there been a solution to that?

I have a question on the upgrade - I just ran into an Error 400 - Bad Request. Any page I tried to open on KF.com would give the same error. It turns out that the problem was that my kf_lastvisit cookie was moronically long. It appeared to have concatenated the info for several months' worth of visits at least. Eventually it was so long that the request could not be handled and the Error 400 came out. I cleared the cookie and it's all good, but if this happens to other people, they may wonder why the site becomes completely inaccessible for them. I don't know if this is a new problem with the site upgrade or not, but it's probably worth a look. Using Firefox 3.5.10 on MacOS 10.5.8. If it's helpful I'll be able to report on the cookie status of my WinXP PC at work sometime this week.

What's the deal with the servers? Seems like more than 500 log on the servers either slow to a crawl, or just give you a "servers are busy" message. With the influx of members and guests watching this forum it seems we have approx 200-400 people on at a time throughout the day with as much as 500-700.. Wonder how many will be on the forums once the season starts =/

Maybe time to put in my first donation to help with an upgrade? Any idea on how much something like that would cost so the site could handle more traffic? I remember a couple years back we were lucky if we got 200 on at a time and most of the time it was somewhere between 40-100 people. Now it seems even late night we have 200 people on!!

Jeremy will respond, most likely, but I do know that money is the problem. We don't even have enough money collected to pay for the current server. Jeremy has to come out of his own pocket to cover the current annual cost. I don't think he should pay evven more for a server upgrade, if we can't even get enough paying members for what we currently have. Some other people contribute more than their membership cost, too. Any ideas on how to get more people to pay are certainly welcome. :)

OOPs.. Why did I think his name was Glenn... Was that a former owner of Kingsfans, or Sackkings? Anyway, yah was just making an observation. The number of people on the site at once has quadrupled in the last couple years it seems. Not sure on the exact numbers but earlier today (and pretty much every afternoon) it seems to start to bog down at about 500-700 users/guests. Right now I am unemployed because of being laid off, but I can scrimp up some cash to help if that would be what it takes. I just have a feeling it might be bad during the season.

Does anyone else not see the "Kings news and links" sub forum or is it just me? I see the thread topics on the front page, but I don't see the forum in "Kings Rap"

I don't see it either. I know Jeremy moved the ad space down, so our banner wasn't cut off. Besides not seeing the news links forum and also notice that the drop-down menus at the top (Quick Links; Forum Actions, etc.) are partially blocked by the ad.

I imagine he may still have some tweaking to do to the site.

With the Google ad moving down I tried to limit the number of other things that pushed the content farther down the page. I added the scouting reports to the main listing and removed the other two sub-forums. If people really miss it I can add it back in or make it a main forum under the scouting reports?

I'm still working on upgrading the look a little, sorry it's taking longer than I had hoped.

One thing I noticed is that the button to hit for going to the most recent post in a thread is VERY small and difficult to hit on a touchscreen phone. Can that be enlarged?
