Signs good for Miller, Jackson

Geoff Petrie hopes they will be on the Kings' playoff roster.

Injured Kings players Brad Miller and Bobby Jackson received good news about their potential return to action after being examined and tested Tuesday.

Geoff Petrie, president of basketball operations, said he hoped both players would be on the Kings' 12-man playoff roster.

"That's a decision for another day," said Petrie, whose team has four regular-season games left and will not have to submit its playoff roster until a few days before the postseason starts the weekend of April 23-24.

"I don't anticipate anything," Petrie added. "Neither has been released. Neither has practiced. We'll have to make that decision once they start doing more basketball-related activities. But I'm hopeful they are on the roster."

Miller's fractured left fibula was judged clinically healed, Petrie said. The center, who was hurt March 12 during a light shooting drill, has been swimming and riding a stationary bicycle, Petrie said.

Before the fibula break, Miller missed six games because of a calf contusion suffered Feb. 27 against the Washington Wizards.

The Kings want to add Miller to the frontline group that includes centers Brian Skinner and Greg Ostertag and forwards Kenny Thomas, Peja Stojakovic, Corliss Williamson and Darius Songaila.

A hamstring injury sidelined Stojakovic for four games after the Feb. 23 trade that brought Skinner, Thomas and Williamson from the Philadelphia 76ers, so the entire group hasn't yet been available.

"Brad's X-ray was much improved," Petrie said. "He's clinically healed, and that means he can start to significantly upgrade his activity. Now that doesn't mean he'll be running up and down in any scrimmages. But he'll be able to run on a treadmill unassisted and gradually increase his speed. He's on an as-he-feels basis."

Jackson hasn't played since a Dec. 21 game against Washington because of a torn ligament in his left wrist. He underwent surgery Jan. 3.

The backup guard has been increasing his activity gradually. During the past month, Jackson has been doing a lot of spot shooting and working out against Kings assistant coaches T.R. Dunn and Elston Turner. After practice last week, Jackson was playing full-court one-on-one against the two former defensive stalwarts. However, he hasn't been cleared to scrimmage.

"He's got another week," Petrie said of Jackson, "and if everything progresses as expected, he could be totally released. He would be cleared to do anything. That would still put Bobby a week ahead of the initial prognosis. He will continue to try to increase his flexibility and strength during this next week."

Petrie cautioned that a player's rehabilitation period is just the start of his comeback. Miller and Jackson will need to regain rhythm and timing before suiting up again. "Especially with Brad and a weight-bearing injury, there is nothing really to compare to running up and down a floor and competing in the NBA," Petrie said. "It's not the same as playing badminton in the back yard. What's good for one isn't good for the other."

maybe it was a reminder that he needs to stop doing layups and dunk the ball?

They both suffered injuries against Washington...all i have to say is THANK GOD that the Wizards aren't in the Western Conference and that they aren't gonna be our first round match up...

I can see however EVERYONE closing their eyes and/or covering them, if and when Brad comes back, everytime he goes to jump up for the rebound to tip in a put back or something...and god help us all if he actually decides to dive on the floor after a loose ball (without thinking about it first)...I know I might go into cardiac arrest

Get Better boys!!

Brad is going to dive for them. You can count on that.

I miss him setting some nice picks:eek:

God help him if he DOESN'T go diving after a loose ball without thinking about it first -- I've seen enough wussiness from our boys to last me a lifetime and I'm about ready to smack someone (the sad part being that I have this sneaking suspicion that they'd let me).

Don't you guys think Brad probably fractured his leg when he smashed into a bench. I think the layup drill was ancillary to the injury. He had to have done the damage when he tore up his leg on that bench. Did I miss something, and everyone already accepts that theory?

Speaking about Brad's picks, did you read the quote in SI from Harris on the pick Brad laid on him in the Mavs game? :) Nice to get him back to set a few more of those....

Funny part is, his teammates never called out the pick to him like they should. Nobody to blame but his team for that little incident.....

I took a real walloping against Sacramento in February. In the third quarter I ran into a pick set by center Brad Miller, the hardest pick I've ever run into. He knocked me on my butt, my neck snapped back, and I was stunned lying on the court. I went to the locker room and wanted to go back in the game, but the trainers had me sit the rest of the night as a precaution.

I heard a doctor call into 1140 when they were discussing Brad's injury. The point was raised that Brad may have not had an x-ray after his "bench" injury and that is in fact when the fracture may have occurred.

The doctor stated that an MRI may not pick up a bone fracture and apparently Brad did have a MRI but no x-ray.

So, you may be on to something!

Well as I heard it, he was kicked in that calf during the Wizards game. And they said they had both MRIs AND X-rays done and they showed nothing. I'm still suspicious. Either that or that musta been one helluva layup. (Really defines "freak" accident, tho.)

We can spend all day speculating on what might have caused the break, but it is NOT unusual for teams relese "cover stories" to protect players/team immage. So a black eye from a fist fight was caused by being hit with a ball in practice ect. Since it is rare for anyone but team members to be present at practice anyting could be true from undetected break from the calf injury to falling out of his truck drunk the night before.

The important thing is it looks like he may be available for the play offs and if the Kings are to have any hope of success Brad is necessary for that.

The most athletic person I ever knew ruined his back getting out of a car seat, ending his athletic career.

Freak accidents happen. ESPECIALLY when your body is somehow comprmised already (the "contusion")

Yeah.. just like how people stretch their leg muscle while laying down in bed... now that HURTS.

oh my god! that hurts SO BAD! when i first had that, i didn't know what to do. i was sleeping but the pain definitely woke me up. i just started crying like a baby and called my mom cause i really don't know what to do. my leg was hurting like hell and i thought i broke it or tore a muscle or something!

well, back to the topic: i think it's great that brad and bobby are really progressing well. :)

lol...sounds painful!

Definitely good news to hear both Brad and Bobby are making significant progress with those injuries.

You guys were talking about Brad diving for loose balls - I was reminded of what was on my sig. :D

I have had a lot of broken bones, x-rays and a few MRIs. Doctors and x-ray technicians miss stuff all the time. It's just a two-dimensional photograph. Maybe if they would have turned his leg a bit one way or the other between x-rays, they might have seen something.

It was clearly the bench incident. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. When he hit that bench, I was surprised that he walked away.

Apparently I was asleep or on another planet during this "bench incident" that some of you have touched on...I don't know when that happened or what exactly happened...

fishgirl-that is one of my favorite Brad quotes of all time
