SAR coming to the Kings discussion (merged)

ESPN says the reason why the Nets cancelled the trade is because he FAILED THE PHYSICAL. Acquire a PF with health problems on top of the negs everyone else has said bout him? Not cool... =/

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.-- The New Jersey Nets on Tuesday rescinded their trade with the Portland Trail Blazers for forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim and acquired forward Marc Jackson from Philadelphia.

The Abdur-Rahim trade was put on hold last week after the nine-year veteran failed a physical. The Nets didn't disclose the nature of the medical problem, but team president Rod Thorn said it was something neither Abdur-Rahim nor the Trail Blazers knew about.

"Obviously we weren't aware of it, and after all the conversations back and forth, I don't think the player was aware there was any problem," Thorn said. "He hadn't missed any games regarding this. To my knowledge, [Portland] wasn't aware of it."

The Nets had planned to use their trade exception to acquire the 29-year-old Abdur-Rahim, who has averaged 19.9 points and 8.1 rebounds in nine years with Vancouver, Atlanta and Portland. With the trade exception scheduled to expire at midnight Tuesday, New Jersey was forced to scramble to make a deal.

"We had a list of guys we had interest in, and he was at the top of our list," Thorn said. "We thought he would fit in very well with us."

New Jersey quickly set its sights on the 30-year-old Jackson, acquiring him from the 76ers for cash and future considerations. The 6-foot-10 center-forward averaged 12 points and five rebounds in 81 games for Philadelphia last season. He has averaged nine points and 4.7 rebounds in five NBA seasons with Golden State, Minnesota and the 76ers.

"He's a good shooter, he's a force down low and draws a lot of fouls," Thorn said. "We feel he's a player who can play in our rotation and help us."

New Jersey had agreed to a six-year deal with Abdur-Rahim, who was acquired earlier this month for a 2006 first-round pick and the Nets' trade exception.

"After consulting with several noted specialists, we felt that rescinding the trade is our best course of action," Thorn said.

Abdur-Rahim missed 22 games with the Blazers last season after undergoing surgery in mid-January to remove loose particles in his right elbow. Thorn said that the Nets tried negotiating a different deal with Abdur-Rahim in recent days, but that he didn't want to change the agreement that was in place.

"We were notified by New Jersey this afternoon that they were rescinding the sign and trade for Shareef Abdur-Rahim," Trail Blazers general manager John Nash said Tuesday. "They cited some concerns after a physical examination and believe that rescinding the trade is in their best interest. The contract that was agreed to with Shareef becomes null and void and he is now a free agent."

i think SAR signing is a decent enough talent acquisition, but in no way makes us anything close to a contender. he is undersized for the west and has never been a winner. but i maintain that no 1 move (a realistic move) can change our prospects. so at least we've added a piece, and ill stay optimistic like others on this board that it leads to further moves. one concern though, i don't think we can trade shareef right away, because what kind of message will that send out to FA's in the future considering sac as their home?

Deadline my friend, its all about the deadline. Remember last season. Except this time, we have A LOT of pieces.

I know the plan of attack against the Dirk's, KG's, Duncans, etc. of the league!

We send out Reef for 5 minutes. He punches Duncan in the face, he is ejected. If Tim took that punishment and is still standing, we send out Jamal. He kicks him in the groin as hard as he can. Tim out. Plus we still have Miller, Corliss, Kenny, and Brian to play. We win the game.

See, depth is a good thing. :D

Seriously people if we land Shareef, and even if we don't, we are a contender. At least on paper. It is up to the players on the team now to improve in the areas where they were lacking last season. Chandler won't make us a defensive stalwart, hes a good player, but c'mon, COME BACK TO REALITY!!! If we need a defensive PF to come in and bail out the other guys than you might as well sign back Vlade to a max deal to make Peja happy.

Petrie knows its time for these guys to step it up big time. Its the ONLY way. And at least our bench looks to have some pretty good defensive players on it so :p
You still forgetting the point that DOUG made the former incarnation of the Kings into much better defenders by giving them a leader. In fact the last successful team Geoff was a part of became so when they brought in Buck Willaims to key the defense for another group of softish offensive players. You ALWAYS need a leader over there. Somebody to build around. Its like saying a group of mediocre scorers will do just as well without a PG.

Well, you got to figure that if we do infact sign SAR, and he has a good season with us, than that is more "trade bait". I am assuming it will be a sliding scale starting at the MLE which would be attractive to teams if SAR were to play well, and we were to make it at least to the second round of the playoffs. Perhaps this could be the beginning of a bigger trade down the line once SAR gains a bit of value for the contract we sign him to.

Defensive role players

if the kings sign SAR, which i think would be a very good move by GP.... i would then concentrate on trying to make the bench more defensive minded... i would try to acquire a big, tough guy like PJ Brown from the hornets... the hornets are going nowhere fast and PJ is 36 years old, so they are willing to trade him for some younger players... but he is still one of the toughest SOB in the NBA...

now the hornets are having trouble getting anyone to sign with them... so they will be forced to trade players to get players... therefore, i think if the kings offered up Thomas and Corliss for PJ Brown and George Lynch (ending contract), the hornets would bite....

this would give the kings a tough defensive SOB to come off the bench and give the kings an ending contract (lynch).... the kings also gets rid of thomas bad contract (5 year, $35mil) for two shorter contracts... the hornets will get a very capable Power forward (thomas) to replace an older one and a very good SF(corliss), who could possibly start for the hornets...

Kings line up... more balance overall...

PF Abdur-Rahim / PJ Brown
SF Stojakovic/ Lynch (or FA Christie or Barnes)
C Miller/ Skinner/ Sampson
SG Wells / Martin / Garcia
PG Bibby/ Hart / Price

Oh, and I think that in getting SAR, it is allowing Thomas to come off the bench at SF and Skinner off the bench at PF, rather than both at PF. I think probably solidifies our line-up a bit more than most people think...and remember, not to compare us to anybody or anything...but a TEAM in a midwestern city won an NBA title a year ago with a couple of ALMOST superstars and a bunch of pieces on the bench. So dont discount anything...we are alot deeper than most teams in the NBA by getting SAR...and whats upcoming in the way of a trade, probably involving Corliss and a draft pick or something like that, whoever we get with that will make us even more deep, and pretty damn good if you ask me.
AMEN

I get a kick out of people having the temerity to raise even the ghost of that Detroit team to try to justify our approach -- as if you could get ANY more reversed in your approach to winning.

Defense wins championships. Very old mantra. Reason it has survived so long.

Give me 4.5 mil a year and I will take all the criticism you guys can throw at me! Hell, I'll even do it for half that.. But not any less! :p

Don't know if Thorn is just being vindictive, but things sort of add up. Rahim's agent, probably trying to protect his client and doing some damage control, came right out and said it was just the scar tissue in his knee and that Shareef has not had any problems with it in the NBA. Now Thorn is saying their concerns weren't about the scar tissue, and that he didn't think Portland or even Shareef knew about this issue.

What could the Nets have seen in their examination that scared them into rescinding this deal?

I don't know -- its very weird. Can't recall anything like this happening before. I've generally been less concerned with the Nets blundering then with how SAR would fit on this team even if healthy, but I would like to know what exactly we are talking about here. Something smells.

But seriously. I think he is a "pickup". A good one or bad one is yet to be seen.

I would love to see what winning does to this guy. He has lost his whole career.

*Webber was a perrenial loser until he came to the Kings, and then the Webber=MVP talk happened every year he was with us.

*Christie hadn't been INVOLVED much in winning anything his whole career, than the turned into an all defensive team type player.

*Bibby all of a sudden had ice in his veins and was clutch.

*Vlade turned into a team captain and rallied the troops for 7 wonderful years.

SAR has the potential to be great. He can put the numbers up, we already know that. He was a 20-10-3 guy at one time so we know he is a talented player. Before we judge him lets welcome him, and see what winning does to him.

Well, maybe the Nets had Shareef x-rayed and saw with their own eyes that he was without a doubt made up of Charmin. :D

I think Reef would be a good pickup, unless there is some serious health issue. Talented guy with something to prove now. We still wouldn't be contender material, but a hell of a lot better that the latter half of last season. Then we bring in some more defensive minded roleplayers and I think we would have a very good lineup.

i really am a bit surprised u guys arent more excited about this possibility....

SAR is a better talent than u could realistically could hope to get given the circumstances....

most agree hes a better player than the typical MLE guy....

hes a quality PF....those dont exactly grow on trees....

to add bonzi and SAR is no small accomplishment in my eyes....now while they are both rather risky moves, given the circumstances and what you have to work with it seems pretty good....the upside/potential is the key....both players have the potential to be very good...

uve basically added two starters without losing a starter....thats no small accomplishment...

Plus we didn't have to give up much to get them. SAR for the MLE is great.. If it works out so be it, if not than he can always be trade bait (with what he signing for he would be great trade bait with his abilities + low salary)

That my friend is a great post. You have just said what a lot of us have tried to say in this thread.

If this goes down, and at this stage its still an if, then Petrie would have done a great job in the off-season.

Considering the state of the team that ended the season, and the pieces we had to play with, if we end up with Bonzi AND Shareef, then GP would have done a very good job.

So far this off-season he hasn't put a foot wrong and if he signs SAR then IMHO, he took another positive step forward.

Shareef to the Kings?

By Eric Pincus

The New Jersey Nets' loss looks to be the Sacramento Kings gain as Shareef Abdur-Rahim is expected to sign a free agent contract with the Kings in the coming days.

The Kings are reportedly discussing sign and trade options with the Portland Trail Blazers; however the Blazers are said to have no interest in any available Sacramento players.

The New Jersey Nets possessed a trade exception which made the original deal possible. They backed out of the trade when Abdur-Rahim failed a physical. The Kings are said not to have the same concerns regarding scar tissue in Abdur-Rahim's knee.

More as it develops . . .

Frankly I think you're missing the point of WHY we aren't more excited about this possibility. DEFENSE. Toughness. Your team doesn't lack it. Ours gave up 102ppg.

And please don't conflate the two moves. Bonzi was a step in the right direction (if he stays sane). He actually has a pair. Shareef is another question entirely.

And the clock hasn't been reset by either of these moves. Our starters will all be closing in on 30. If its going to happen for them it happens now in the next three years, with maybe 1 year of fading contention after that. Shareef helps replenish our depleted talent base in the wake of losing Vlade/Webb/Doug for a grand total of KT/Skinner/Corliss. But he's the wrong type of talent himself, and if we're going to contend with ANY of the curent group, then either he or one of the others has to be moved in the immediate future. Wait even two years, and basically the whole crew is over 30 and its too late for anything other than desperation moves.

Well you have to remember, I called the SAR move even before the summer began. Along with the Cisco move BTW. (the third leg of my own little unholy triumvirate is Peja's impending max contract). So I've been anticipating this resolution of the "plot" for some time. Comes as no great shock to me -- I'll live. ;)

However, call it the traditional Penn/Princeton rivalry if you will, but I think the curtain has very much been pulled back on Geoff for me. Not the great and powerful Oz after all, but just a smart guy with an M.O. and weaknesses like anyone else.

My quick take on this deal, I think it's a winner. Is it as big as the Webber deal? Definitely not. Does it make us a contender? Probly not.

Simply put, however, is this team better with Kenny Thomas as its starting four or SAR, clearly I take SAR. Especially if we are able to land him at the MLE or relatively cheap as it looks like we will I think this is a steal.

Yes, Brick, and Yoda and all the naysayers are right in saying our frontline still needs drastic changes if we are to be more than an average team, but the simple fact is SAR is a cheap improvement and makes other front court players *cough Peja cough KT cough B52* much more expendable since we got a guy who arguably can play the three if Peja is moved, or the high post soft 4 if Brad is moved.

I don't see how you can be angry about adding talent for cheap, even if it is the type of talent we already have. Im happy with this move, although still awaiting the "flexibility" the Webber trade gave us to rear its head. This sign means we're overloaded at the 4/5 and perhaps the three and I fully expect its only the first of a few moves, or at least I hope.

well...i guess im not sure how to respond to that....

the team is potentially much better than the team that finished the season...especially given the fact mobley was a goner...

if u go on the assumption that the team was losing mobley, adding SAR and Bonzi potentially make this team far better than what was realistically possible...

now if u choose to compare these moves to the dream concepts of KG or anything else, then i guess i could understand a little disappointment....

but then again, this is real world....and the kings were faced , not too long ago, with being a below average team....a team with 3 very good players and not much else....now theyve potentially got a quality starting five with a couple of solid reserves....quite possibly a solid playoff team...

is this a championship contender??? no...but given the situation, that was highly unlikely....no cap room, no highly tradeable pieces doesnt make for any instant gratification moves....

there is no one reasonable move that can be made that suddenly lifts the team to championship status...

however, if the team gets better....and adds better pieces....then theyre closer, and in a better position....and then, quite possibly only one move away from being a contender...

bottom line is, the team has definitely moved forward....and theyve potentially move dramatically forward, albeit with some risks involved...
