Salmons

Kingster

Hall of Famer
So who are the teams that need a 6'6" wingman who can drive to the hole, plays pretty good D, but can deal with his over-dribbling?

I'm already looking to the trade deadline...

That's tough.

Salmons' ball-stopping habits aren't really desirable anywhere, IMO. And we all know he doesn't like coming off the bench.

But, there are teams that could still use a decent swingman. Toronto and Memphis come to mind...Toronto actually made a play for him in free agency back in '06.

Maybe Washington as a backup to Caron Butler if they're willing to roll the dice. Other possibilities: Cleveland, Milwaukee, Indiana, New Jersey...all which could use upgrades off the bench. Just depends on if they think Salmons is that guy, which to them I say YES! but truthfully feel otherwise.

Ball stopping aside, I already mentioned him as a possible fit in Cleveland, where they need a starting full sized OG who can defend. Pavlovic is a considerably lesser player, and is apparently out of favor. Wally gets lit up whenever he steps on the floor. Everybody else is a PG.

But Salmons is talented enoguh this is not as hard a sell as the current Salmons-o-phobia amongst the Sacto fanbase would make it seem. He's got talent, versatile, cheap. If we want to move him, there is no reason to think we wouldn't have mutiple suitors. Maybe not making offers we love, but suitors nonetheless. The complicating factor is not his ball stopping -- somewhat overrated and partially curable on a top team, but ratehr his inability to play off the bench, where otherwise hehas the build of a strong 6th man. Be a bit foolish for anyone to pick him up thinking of him as anything but a starter.

^^ I agree, Cleveland would be a possible destination for Salmons. A trade that makes sense for both teams would be Szczerbiak for Salmons+Thomas/Moore.

Cleveland won't offer much if we move Salmons to them.

However, Indiana might be a better partner.

Dunleavy + Hibbert = Salmons + Mikki

Dunleavy will be a much better offensive and not undersized as SF. His outside touch might just ease up those scoring deficits we currently have.

Salmons is also better than any SG in Indiana right now. Granger is already their appointed SF. So Dunleavy is a bit of a high priced back-up.

Hibbert will be a tricky part. But if the trade will go through I think he'll be a much better upgrade of stonehands Mikki. Young, cheap, and big. Mikki has a possible buyout for next season, so he won't really bother Indiana's cap.

The point wouldn't be to get a dubious piece like Dunleavy -- the whole point of a trade to Cleveland would be to get Wally's ending contract, and dump either KT or Mikki's contract along with it, ala what Detroit just did when they got Iverson. Its winning the financial game so that we can get well under the cap and make runs at big free agents.

And Salmons' value is probably highest to a contending team like Cleveland (ESPECIALLY Cleveland because they have got to do something to convince LeBron to stay). To a poor team Salmons is just what he is to us -- too old to be part of a rebuild, and not good enough to get them back to contention. But to a good team with a hole in the lineup ala Cleveland, he can be a versatile patch.

I think Salmons might hold the ball too much to be a good fit with Cleveland. They're smart to go for guys like Mo Williams who can catch and shoot. Unless they were bringing in Salmons just to be a defensive stopper, because I think he might struggle offensively.

I agree in general though that if we wanted to trade him we could. I don't think an ender alone is worth it though, because at this point we can just be patient and they're going to be valuable on their own. We'd need to get a young player that's worthwhile.

if his defense can be alot more consistant on stars.....you really want to trade a 6-7asts guy that can lock down the other teams best player??

Wonder if Spurs shall be interested. Manu is out for a long time, and they are looking bad despite stellar play from both Duncan and Parker. Salmons could step up as a starter there (particularly if they trade someone like Bowen in the process. His contract runs an year shorter than Salmons, and hence the advantage).

I do agree though, that it might be relatively easy to move him. Challenge will be to either dump someone like KT with him, or to get something really useful (like an expiring plus kids/picks).

That actually is not the worst thought in the world -- the Spurs do need a Bowen replacement, as well as more offense. Thing is that the average age of that team is soiemthing like 103.8 yrs and they are not exactly stocked with young assets. Also true that they may be coming to the end of their run now, and may want to keep the few young assets they have for a rebuild. But if you could construct something involving Tiago Splitter and a pick (which should not be as late as it has been in years past), I think you might have something.
