Rudy Gay - start or come off the bench?

Should Rudy Gay start or come off the bench?

They get absolutely nuked on defense. Worst SG defenders in the entire NBA. Its killing us in ugly fashion.

That's not me arguing for starting Rudy at SG BTW. Its just me making the point that our SGs have been an absolute disaster for us this year, and if we don't want Malone's head to actually explode we desperately need to put SOMEBODY in their spot who could stop Ruth Bader Ginsburg from crossing them up.

I think Scalia is more of a small forward than a shooting guard, though.

I don't know that it's the best solution, but it's one idea. A better one might be to keep the lineup the way it is, but start calling plays from the sideline so that the shot distribution doesn't heavily favor two or three (notoriously streaky) players or tough contested jumpers. Run some plays for back-cuts, alley oops for McLemore and Williams, post up Rudy Gay, get role-players who don't often touch the ball more involved with some screen and roll plays. Just anything really to mitigate the amount of time guys are standing around waiting for something to happen.

They already do plays from the sidelines. Also, unless a very streaky guy like Thornton is hot, you want the ball to go to the guys who can score - Cousins, IT, Gay. I think there is a lot of standing around now because the new guys haven't had the time to be integrated into the offense. It makes sense to me that if Gay and the rest don't know the offense, you almost have to go to mostly a very simple offense, a predetermined couple of plays, or isolation.

Seems like our guards are getting nuked on a regular basis. Team defense starts with the Guards keeping their man from penetrating into the paint, and our guards simply do not do that. As soon as the other team gets penetration, our defense collapses. Until we can either get IT and McLemore to play defense or bring in talent to play defense at one of the guard positions, the Kings will continue to lose. You cant get burned every time down the floor by penetration. There needs to be some defense played on the guy with the ball. If the Coaching staff is preaching defense, then they need to preach directly to the guards at this point. Either play defense or ride pine. Problem is our bench guards are actually worse on defense. So the team really needs to acquire a guard or 2 who can play defense. Hoping for a trade before the deadline to obtain a guard that can play defense so when IT or B-Mac are getting torched, they have someone they can go to off the bench as a stopper.

I just realized something and it is pretty funny. On Dec, 15th this baord was discussing Rudy as one of the best SF's in the history of the franchise. Check out the results:

Eleven days later we are dicsussing putting him on the bench. We too funny.
One 2-12 game erases an entire career apparently.

Was there talk of sending Chris webber to the bench 7 games into his kings career?

Well, he DID shoot 9-23 in his 7th game with the Kings... :p

More likely though the knives did not come out until Game 28, when he shot 2-13.

Yep.... I guess some people are running out of things to talk about or are tired of bashing IT or something? You don't put Rudy on the bench.. That's just stupid, and I hope that whoever voted to put him on the bench were kidding. If not then I don't know what to say...

The way I see it, the whole argument is a sideways approach to pimping IT as the #2 or (gulp) #1 option on offense. If it's a choice between benching Gay and benching IT, you bench IT. Right now, it's not only not necessary, but not an option to bench IT. If we had Toney Douglas, I would strongly consider it.

If you look at the poll results, I think it's pretty apparent the idea of Rudy coming off the bench is only popular with about 12.5% of the board. The vast majority of folks believe he should start.

It's a public poll. Click on the vote numbers and you can see who voted for which choice.

i will not be surprised if the majority of the Kings fan base wants him off the team by the All-Star break

and i'm not saying that this is my personal opinion on Rudy, it's just something i see happening

Good, I'm glad to see you agree with me.

I agree. Its very difficult to incorporate new players into a new system with one short practice. That's why they have training camps etc. to get everyone on board. Its bad enough to bring 0ne player up to speed, but to bring this many new players up to speed is going to take some time. Also, unfortunately, the word isolation, has become a bad word, and should only be considered so, if you don't have anyone capable of creating his own offense. If you have players on your team that are capable isolation players, thats a blessing, not a curse. That doesn't mean you don't run plays, or pass the ball, it means that when push comes to shove, you have someone you can go to that can score despite the defense of the other team.

The downside of isolation is when you have players like James Johnson thinking that their Michael Jordan. As long as you have a discliplined team, there's nothing wrong with running isolation plays.

Unfortunately, we live in an instant gratification society. Very little thought, just knee jerk reactions.

Not fair to the vast majority of the board. The poll results indicate ONLY 12.5% think Rudy should come off the bench.

I mean no offense to anyone, but I have a lot of respect for the vast majority of posters on this board, even those with whom I very often disagree. It's disheartening to me to continually see people commenting about how bad the board is, how stupid the comments, etc.

We are truly blessed to still have a team to root for AND a great place to come to and talk about said team. It would be pretty boring if everybody had the same feeling about every single topic, wouldn't it?

Kingsfans.com has outlived at least three pretty popular Kings boards over the years. I think one of the main reasons for that is that we do get into interesting debates. Sure, some of the comments don't really offer much but, for the most part, I'm incredibly proud of the depth of knowledge shown on a daily basis.

Thing is though, he wants to score.

That may be, but he puts up 2 less shots a game than McLemore does, in comparable minutes (in fact a few more), so his version of shot happy is one we could obviously deal with. Just a question of whether is offense is going to stay this incompent post injury.

Balderdash.

I don't know how you double down on "balderdash" but I'll give it a try. I don't have a clue as to how that thought would even enter anyone's mind.

Double balderdash. I see Rudy Gay as a major acquisition. The chaos resulting from the trade can be interpreted in many ways. It is part of the pain in acquiring a second bonefied star. Now we see if we can come up with some more major pieces and I count Ben as one of them.
