Realistic PFs for the Kings

#1
Some of the trade threads here have tried to work on scenarios where the Kings could get players like Kevin Garnett or Tyson Chandler. I really don't think either of those will work. Garnett's not getting traded unless someone makes a huge offer to the Wolves, the Bulls might be able to with all of their first round picks and young talent, or the Wolves start out the season very poorly. Even then he's not getting traded for a combo of Miller, Thomas, and change. Chandler at his current level of play is too pricy for the Kings, unless Petrie really thinks he will blossom.

However, there are some realistic possibilities out there. Most of them will probably dissapoint people since they are not flashy choices. However, we do not have the ammo to get an uber-star like Garnett, Brand, Duncan, etc. Here's a list of several players I believe are either undervalued, duplicated on their teams, or could become available if their teams struggle who we could get:

Likely

1 - Charlie Villanueva

The Raptors already have Chris Bosh and if they do not trade down in the draft will take Bargnini (sp), Aldridge, or Thomas. Considering they would have three bigs with similar games and no swingmen outside of MoPete, a trade would make a lot of sense. With Bonzi, Garcia, and Martin we should be able to make a trade that would appeal to the Raptors. CV would be a nice gamble since he's young and athletic and would provide us with some scoring and defence, including those much needed blocked shots.

2 - Andre Biendres / Ike Digou

The Warriors like both of these players. However, they are both PFs and the Warriors also have Carbakaba, Murphy and Taft. They also have a lottery pick and are rumored to like players such as Shelden Williams and other big men. Eventually, they will need to dump one or two of these players and they would be in our price range. Garcia + pick/change for Biendres seems reasonable.

Less Likely, but still possible

3 - Pau Gasol

The Grizzlies just got swept again and may start having second thoughts about some of their core players. For example, is Pau Gasol a franchise player or a nice complimentary one. If the Griz start out slowly in an improved Western Conference, the Griz may decide the latter. I'm not sure we would have the ammo for Gasol, but if the Griz valued cap space or some combo of Bonzi, K-Mart, Garcia, Thomas, Miller, whoever we draft at #19, and future draft picks, it is at least possible.

4 - Jermaine O' Neal

Already the subject of many trade rumors, a poor start by Indiana could convince them to trade their oft-injured center piece and start over. If this happens very publicly, another team would likely have a better offer. However, if Petrie is working the phones and Indiana avoids a loud display after the Artest fiasco, several of the parts listed in the Gasol scenario could make a deal work.

JO/Ron - No.

Chandler for Miller is semi-realistic. Chicago fans and media are positive and enthused about him through out this season, couple times most recently. While not the organization, still shows something.

Pau isn't getting traded and JO+Ron doesn't work. Villanueva doesn't solve our problems(he plays SF right now BTW) and the GS guys aint even that good.

Raptors have Joey Graham at the 3, but I think he could end up in Milwakee for Magloire. 06/07 is Mo Pete's last year, so the Raps would need to get something done at the 2 spot. A three team deal possibly.

Gasol and O'Neal aren't real possibilities. We don't have anything to offer those teams except players we poached from them. Villanueva isn't quite the PF we want. He's too similar to the guys we have right now (3/4 type).

Very few realistic players out there for us. Taft might be a possibility, but he’s a question mark talent wise. Stromile Swift anyone? Marvin Williams might be in the same category as Villanueva), Nene, Ethan Thomas, PJ Brown (getting old), Robert Swift (a bust so far, and might not even be what we want). If we’re lucky maybe Chris Wilcox or Gadz might be available.

and dont we still have rahim? why in the hell do we need another pf? we need a center and a point guard.... thomas aside we are good at the 2,3 and 4... if we could somehow trade for chandler, hope full ywe could have darius thrown in as well... then trade thomas for anyone.... i mean anyone.... we just dont need him...

We need 1-2 additions and subtractions in the FC. Brad/KT/SAR/Potapenko - will not be our PF/C four guys. You need some athleticism and defense in there, and the only guy with any certainity is SAR.

Griffin/Elson/Ely/Wright/Magloire/Chandler/possibly Hilton Armstrong... obviously starting and bench apply.

I'd love to get Magloire at center, if the price was right. However, I'm concerned that he has only one year left on his contract and the rumors that say he wants to head to Toronto when his contract is up. I'd hate to trade Miller, who I think still has value around the league, for a one year lease on a player who'd leave us at the end of the season.

I wouldn't be disappointed with Chandler either. He's a defensive-minded center, which is what we need. Oh ya, and the 9 rpg in about 27 minutes a night is intriguing too! Him being only 23 is a bonus, even if his contract is gigantic. Of course his FT% is discouraging, but look at the success Detroit has had with Ben Wallace. The guy is lousy from the charity stripe, but is still worth his weight in gold for the blocks/boards. IMO Definitely worth a gamble…

I'm with you on this one. SAR is about the best available PF we can afford right now. Lets get the 5 taken care of and pick up a back up PG. *cough* Bobby *cough*

because we still have Rahim. ;)

Its like having a new Wayman Tisdale as our PF -- scores, but are you going to win a title on scoring alone?

in my mind the BEST case scenario is one where the Kings bring in a new big man (call him a center if you like) who can rebound blck shots and play low post, while keeping Brad (call it shifting him to the 4 if you like). I have no clue how Petrie can pull it off but if he can Im for it. If Muss contenues with his more traditional offensive style and stresses D, Brad is just the wrong guy to have at the 5.

If it's true the Bulls are going to draft Tyrus Thomas, a trade Brad Miller-Tyson Chandler could be possible.

If we keep Brad, I don't expect more tran a Skinner or an Etan Thomas for the defensive 4/5. Forget Chandler, Nene or Magloire, it's not easy get any of them with Kenny Thomas or with Potapenko.

Ely

Melvin would be a great pickup. So would Joel Pryzbilla. He's a free agent. What do you guys think about him???

By the way, if we still had Skinner, this wouldn't even be a topic. I STILL don't know why Adelman didn't play that guy more. He seems like a Musselman kind of guy to me - blocks shots, plays good defense.

Indeed! I was puzzled.

Etan Thomas is my guy. He would be perfect. Even better than Skinner in what we need. Skinner is probably better overall, but Etan is a guy that knows his role, box out and protect the rim.

I am looking for a Danny Fortson for Kenny Thomas trade or something where we bring in staight hustle guys. Muss loves his hustle guys like Boykins, Fortson, Cardinal, etc.

Fortson? I dunno, I'd rather go after guys like Elson/Griffin/Ely for PF first. First two have legit jump shots, all are athletic, 6'10+, can play center, and effective without the ball.

I don't know if he's the complete answer, but a Etan for Kenny Thomas swap would definitely be a start.

I like Cato, and will be rehabbing that ankle over the summer.

looking in your sig. i am with you on the first 2 I hope one of them is available at our pick. I could care less about a point guard as much as everybody else is around here. We have mike that is playing 40 min a game. i think we can handle Ron, K-Mart, or Garcia combining for 8 min at the point

Almost forgot about Cato. That could be a good pickup, he is a guy I can see Musselman getting the most out of.

Another good pickup that could come very cheap is Michael Olowokandi.

Hey, why did Detriot stock up on all these quality big men, i.e. Dale Davis and Kelvin Cato, to make things tough for Shaq and then hardly use them?

Extra fouls, size, and experience. Purely if Dyess/Sheed/Ben got into foul trouble. Dale was used some in the Heat series, Cato barely because of his ankle.

I agree about Kandi, seems to of cooled down his act and is very big, a rebounder/blocker, can score down low.
