Another OT game! Am not able to watch this one how were the last few possessions of regulation? I saw some 24sec violations on both sides and some missed shots. Was perkins open for her tying 3? I hope we still win this. I hope our players aren't tired.:(

well, i'm here editing this post: My worse fears have happened again. It seems that our players ran out of gas in the end again. Perkins had a MONSTER game. who was guarding her? The five which finished the game seemed to play the 2 straight OTs again (except for that Kara-Sho substitution). Maybe Chelsea should've tried to defend her again since she's relatively fresh. Well, it's 84-90 22 sec left....not much hope on this one.:(

I should've used perkins on the pick one fantasy game tonight:mad:

No Brunson was guarding her & just the little bit of space, gave her the chance to launch...3. She didn't do much wrong last night, off the charts.
I feel like I just played double OT;) So I'm gonna let this one go & get ready for Minn. Sunday.
Excellent seeing Donna Orender, a class act & very funny.
 
Weird game...may have more thoughts later, but that's what comes to mind now.

No, Perkins had a hand in her face most of the night. The 3pt shot she hit to tie the game? Not many people could have hit it, she was twisted awkwardly in air and had a hand in her face (which she was twisting away from) and was fading away from the basket. Honestly it was a prayer shot that OF COURSE went in as hot as she got last night. I chalked her night up as someone going INSANE, she was inventing shots to hit unlike the Fernandez lay-up line. I mean for goodness sakes, she had double digit assists, so she even was sharing the ball and making her teammates blow up just like she was.

It might have been hard for Newton to guard her, she left the game at some point in the 4th I believe and never returned. Given that this team needed legs and bodies on Perkins, I'm not sure coach had a non injury related intention to sit a defender that long.

Not really....anyway here are my thought from last night.

This team was flat tired come second overtime. No legs, no arms, no shot.

I thought the key play of the night, and I believe we were up, but it was the last possession of the first overtime and the Monarchs got a stop on defense with less than 24 seconds left in the game. Instead of calling a time out on the rebound or after the bring up, they continued to play (WHICH I AGREED WITH). Then Ticha began to run a set and nothing was happening. Boucek with seven seconds left on the shot clock CALLS A TIME OUT!!!! I was absolutely horrified. Of course we get nothing, and Dupree comes back and lays the ball in to go into double OT. That was poor coaching, and I thought cost us the game.

Adrian Williams was good on offense, very poor on defense. She seemed to be out of position all night and her help was extremely poor which left a gaping hole in the middle.

I thought Ticha was sensational last night in spite of shooting what...2-14. I don't care what she shot, she kept the Sky defense on it's toes. She controlled tempo, and was in total command especially in the fourth quarter. For the first time in a long time she was a complete difference maker wen she had the ball in her hand. IMHO her best game of the season.

Did you see the burn marks left on Newton and Lawson. Man....I don't know who Perkins is, but she was unbelievable. The fifth best scoring night in WNBA history. My only question is when Chelsea and Kara could not check her, why Coach did not go to Ticha to check her.

We missed Yolanda in the middle. 'Nough said.

For the first time this season, I questioned Jenny Boucek's coaching. She kind of looked like a rookie. I thought she played the rotation 'Bekkah, Williams, Powell, Penicheiro, Robinson a tad bit too long in the first and second OT. I understand she did it for defense, but they were not stopping anybody, and come second OT no strength to score. No Newton, no Haynie, not much Atkinson.

Oh well, sorry I went too long see you Sunday. NEED A WIN:(
 
Tanty would have fouled out trying to defend Perkins. Coach rotated everybody she had available - an equally decent perimeter defender in Atkinson had no success. Ticha was busy checking Price, who had it not been for the aforementioned blow up by Perkins, had a decent night of her own. We might have given up he career high last night too. It was another problematic defensive Hobson's choice, you move TP to Perkins and *HOPE* some of the shots Perkins was pulling out of her proverbial.... stopped falling despite wearing a defender in her jersey and create a defensive mismatch on the freakishly athletic Price.

Artest was sideline last night, he might have slowed Perkins down....I mean seriously, Perkins was NOT getting off a lot of uncontested shots. The only thing we could have hoped for was her not touching the ball, but since she was running some if not all of the point, it was hard keeping the ball out of her hands. She had double digit assists, so it wasn't like we were slowing down whomever she was passing the ball to either.


No Haynie? We didn't miss her in the latter portions of that game. Newton I HAVE to believe was hurting and that's why she played less than 20 minutes last night. She barely played in that LA game Weds - she sat with a heating pad draped over her shoulder most of the night it seemed. Williams was all we had on the bench who could play appreciable defense in this system. Frohlich struggled defensively too, she was a foul magnet in her minutes despite doing something offensively. I might have finished the game with Brunson, Penicherio, Lawson, Robinson and Powell and saw where that got me. If Newton was hurt, coach was screwed with her defensive lineups the longer that game went on after Chicago erased the lead the Ms had in the 4th.

WORD! On the unfortunate decision to call a timeout with 7 ticks left. If this team EXECUTED anything good with a short shot clock I might have seen the concept behind THINKING calling a time out would be good then. Actually CALLING one is another story altogether. 6th came over to me afterwards and suggested that either coach saw the Monarchs %$$%ing something up with the play they were running SOOOO badly one HAD to be called to make it right, or coach just screwed up by calling the time out. No other explanation would make sense. Except that the refs got stupid again like the ones in LA did and screwed us out of a decent possession by misinterpreting JB's gesture for a time out call. I was sorta hoping that had happened again - because an intentional time out call didn't make sense. The outcome we got from it? Seeing the shot Ticha had to resort to made me instantly LOVE every other "shot" we try to hoist when we are under 5 seconds on the shot clock, even the ones that never draw iron. That she GOT a shot off should make me appreciate that and the fact that she hit something with it, but if I NEVER see that shot have to happen again, it would be too soon. Coach in still in learning mode..I chalked that up to that.

Agree with this definitely. I would have thought that after the previous double OT game where the same 5 played the last few minutes of regulation and 2OT...and obviously had no legs left, she would have adjusted to this. I mean, no sense having your "best" defenders or players for that matter if they don't have anything left in the tank. We have one of the deepest if not the deepest bench in the league. For her not to use this in this situation, is, in my opinion not good coaching. :mad:

Her rotation if anyone notices is "almost" scheduled, i.e. she puts in people almost at predetermined times regardless of performance. This is in contrast to Whiz, where he looks at their leg movement and pulled you out if you didn't move your legs, looked tired or obviously if you played bad.

I'm saying this with all due respect, but you would have had to have seen the game to understand. Perkins was "anointed" last night. This was beyond a box score from across the country. It was an unbelievable display of outside shooting off of the dribble that has not been seen in this league. Part of me wish the game was on TV, and the other part of me was glad that it wasn't. Taurasi would have been impressed.

I love Maiga-Ba, however I think Robinson is comparable to her defensively. But the only thing that would have slowed that girl down was a hard double team. BUT SHE HAD TEN ASSISTS!!!!:eek:
 
Just a short note...my mom and I ran into Coach/General Manager Whiz & wife today at the movie. We had a brief discussion on the game. He mentioned how tired the players were from playing so many games, in so many nights.He said the defense was terrible. So we left it at that & went into seeing a sad love story...(Evening)....nice to feel sentimental about something other than a Monarchs loss.

Because this team "Hangs it's Hat" on playing Defense. That has been the Excuses why our offense and taken a back seat.
Annointed players are not suppose to happen to This ball club.

The White Line is suppose to stop all of that.

I know my imput has little value since I didn't see the game.

However I keep waiting for the light to come on with this team. We always seem so close. In looking at the boxscores if you had told me Adrian Williams and Bekkah had Double Doubles, Nicole and Kara had 15 and 14 respectively And Ticha's line is what it was, NO WAY do I think we could lose. On paper that is great Stuff.

I still contend that I would have put Shooters on the floor at the end of the game when the Time Out occured. I know that is an unpopular decision, but that is what I would have done. Then again, I probably wouldn't have called a Time out either. Even still I think we have alot more to contemplate if we cannot execute a play with less than 5 secs on the clock.

Maybe we just aren't that good of a team. Maybe we have overacheived up to this point. I don't know. I know we have won ugly, and lost close games. I know we have gotten some good efforts here and there, but this team has not put a complete game together yet.

I would love to believe that if Yo was healthier maybe we have a different outcome. But I am not too convinced that having Yo available would have made a difference. It is frustrating as Hell.

Maybe this is a Storm we have to weather, That we have no place to go but up.

I think the up side is that Adrian did give us good Minutes in her Start. Fro seems to give a couple of decent minutes. And Ticha Filled the Stat sheet in a meaningful way. That is me looking at the glass half Full.
 
I'll echo Reign...Maiga-Ba made ZERO difference last year when we were being eaten alive by the record setting two headed monster that was Taurasi/Pondexter.

I was only half being facetious about Artest...Perkins was pulling shots out of her $$$. "Annointed" is as good a word as to describe it. The shot she hit to send it to overtime was as well defended and as much of a prayer as anything and it went in with little left on the shot clock. If Maiga could have done anything with that she would have been superhuman.


About the rotations? I actually feel Whiz was more routine and Boucek is more random.
 
I guess there's a disconnect with me at the point where you seem to be suggesting that Gia F. Perkins and Diana F. Taurasi are on the same level, to the degree where you seem to be saying that Maïga-Ba not being able to stop Taurasi is some kind of evidence that she couldn't stop Perkins. In my opinion, Perkins and Taurasi are not at the same level, and to me, saying that Maïga-Ba couldn't have slowed down Perkins because she didn't slow down Taurasi last year is kind of like saying that, because Artest can't slow down Kobe Bryant, then he can't slow down Raja Bell.

But, I tell you what, if you want to say that Atkinson is an equal defender to Maïga-Ba, that's your business. My point is that I feel like, if I need a perimeter stop to win a game, I'm taking Maïga-Ba over Atkinson a hundred times out of a hundred. I may not have seen last night's game, but I've seen just about half of the games the Monarchs have played this year, and I feel like I've seen enough of Atkinson to make a judgment: Atkinson has definitely showed some potential, but nothing to the degree that I feel comfortable with her being on the team instead of Maïga-Ba. You may feel as though they're on the same level but, as far as I'm concerned, the smart money's on Maïga-Ba.
 
Having read all the posts, I think there's been a disconnect somewhere. Rather than try to guess where, I'll just say this.

My opinion: Perkins was unconcious and very lucky last night. No one was stopping her last night....not anyone. You cannot speak Atkinson and Maiga-Ba in the same breath. There is no comparison, neither defensively or offensively. I am not seeing the excitement about her that some of my esteemed basketball friends are seeing. She has a lot of energy and hustle and that's about it. I don't think she handles the ball very well (loses it on the dribble too easily), nor does she use good sense on the court (intead of looking for open teammates, she dribbles into a pack of defenders and loses the ball in the lane).

Not to argue but:

Kara = usually first of the bench replacing chelsea
Adrian = usually replaces Yo about halfway into quarter
Haynie = always in at about the 4 minute mark of each quarter, except the fourth where lately she has been starting it for about 2-3 minutes then Ticha comes in and finishes it (unless we need offense then Kara runs point at the final minutes)
Sho = can come in for Nicole or Chelsea but comes in for nicole in the first since Kara comes in for Chelsea, and usually comes in before haynie in the first.
Bek = before De Mya was injured would come in for De Mya, now that she is starting will be gone after nicole gets a rest from Sho i.e. Nicole replaces Bek before the end of the quarter

just a sample of the routine substitution pattern. with Whiz his substitution wasn't based on a set time on the court, it was whether they were still effective on defense "moving their feet" as he always said.

Not saying Perkins and Taurasi are on the same level. I guess I am saying, having seen Perkins as a collegian that her performance last night was well within her potential as a scorer, especially given she came off an above average performance (for her as a pro) against Seattle. I take that back...she was freaking pulling shots out of her @@@ last night.

I'll agree to disagree on whether or not Maiga would have made a difference. My feeling given what I saw when this team has been blown up by somebody, it wouldn't have mattered if Artest was on Perkins. We rolled everybody we had available...and most of them stuck to Perkins like they were the fabric in her uniform, it didn't matter. The defenders she had on her last night weren't crap.

I also stick with my feeling that if Maiga would have made a difference she would have been superhuman given the way Perkins was getting shots off with hands in her face and a defender draped on her. (We are speaking in "ifs" here because Maiga is no longer a part of this roster, Newton was only partially available, Ticha had her hands full with someone else and so on and so on). Doesnt matter to me personally if anyone saw the game or not, every one is entitled to their opinion. My opinion is it would not have mattered. C'est la vie.
 

Well since the Maiga discussion has come up...

Lets talk about offense. Anyone totally impressed of what Mrs. Ba is doing in Houston. Her offense seems to have really blossomed and she is totally filling up the stat sheet.

I am incredibly happy for Mrs. MyGOBBA. I believe that Tangie is a better rebounder than Maiga but lets bear in mind that this is her 2nd year in the league. She has shown tremendous explosion. She doesn make questionable passes, and needs to work on her handles. But all and all Tangie was a solid pick up for the M's. I love having her out on the floor with Sho.

Aside:
What I think we miss in Maiga is her temperment. She is such a classy person. (not that any of the other players aren't) But Maiga always had a mature, dignified air about her, and I believe that her personal presence is missed. She is a balance to the other personalities on the team.

I absolutely agree. And this is only part of the reason I miss her.
 
I actually am among those who were excited about Atkinson's addition here. To compare where she is as a 2nd year pro with where Maiga is now is kinda misleading and that's not where I was going with the mention. My reason for mentioning her earlier in this thread is that she is the best we have now as a perimeter defender. The similarities she shares with Maiga is that she came from a very solid defensive college program and she has tremendous length and athleticism as a defender.

I think at their same spots in their career, I think Atkinson is more offensively skilled than Maiga was and definitely has more range. Neither one of them at the same stage in their careers would be someone I wanted handling the ball.
 
Admiral, if you could drop the pic of the shot over Brunson into this thread I for one would appreciate seeing it. She shot that from my corner of the arena...when it went in I said "OF COURSE that would go in..." it was that ridiculous. She drops that shot and Kara Lawson has a shot wedge itself between the hoop and the backboard late in one of the OTs and we have to jump it up...I said "OF COURSE" then too.
 
Yeah I'd like to see that last shot as well...sorta.
I just remember it was the little bit of seperation from Brunson,that gave her the look & like most her shots it went in. When a team needs a 3 you have to be in their shorts...so to speak. Or as DeMya does, hand in the face.
Maybe then Brunson could have blocked it or maybe she fouled her...let her earn it at the line. I know we don't like to foul in that situation, but it always comes back to bite us. '' Well that game is behind us now & we gotta get ready for those pesky Lynx.
