Post game thoughts 12/4

I always forget, we have Potapenko and Mo Taylor sitting over there as well, doing nothing. Why?

Is there any GM on the planet who would trade for those guys?
Why not have the two kids from training cap sitting down there. At least they'd get as many minutes and they have a future.

yup! but unfortunately there's only one, and his name is geoff petrie. ;)

Boy, I was just thinking Douby, Taylor, Hart and Potapieajf;aeiko should be getting more run. That'd surely shore things up.

Come on, now.

And the kids are better off where they are.

^The clutch thing is overrated to begin with. Plus you can't (or shouldn't) use the past two games to judge Bibby's 'clutchitude.' Yeah, he makes some and misses some (probably more than he makes) but that can be said of anyone. Jordan had a commercial about this once, if I recall.

Actually, Thomas should start with Miller. Shareef would be a great option for the second team.

Not many people have Webber's hands.

Might be too early to conclusively say about Darko, but he looked merely adequate tonight.

Only Webber has Webbers hands.

Only Webber has Webbers hands.

He's still got one of Webber's knees too. Its not playing much right now for the 20 million. We'd still miss the old Webber even if he never left. I'm more sad about the ones like gerald and hedo who might have been kept, but its all a series of judgement calls and then second-guesses.

Plus in the wake of the whole Bonzi bullet-dodging, I'm sort of high on Petrie's ability to let a player go when it looks like its time. Teams that start signing player's based on fan demand and sentimental value, blahh blahh blah, the knicks. Every move he makes can't work out, but GP has a good track record of cutting loose right before the wheels come off. It hurts when its a Vlade but it has to be done, its just business.

You rather mistake cause and effect, and in particular it doesn;t apply to Webb.

Bonzi not resigning is WHY things have gone the way they did for him. Doug getting traded is WHY he basically quit on the league. And Webb, well Webb is not what he was, but he has BADLY outperformed the "flexible garbage" we got back in return -- and for the 1000th time, we have continued to pay Chris Webber right on through for the last two years. Only now he's 6'6" to 6'7", with a fraction of the talent, and eating up 3 roster spots (1/4 of the roster) rather than just one.

I thought he looked shorter.

...

That's the problem with this whole discussion of Webber's salary. People simply do not understand the reality that we're still paying...

I don't necessarily agree on the cause-effect of Bonzi and Doug, but it's something we'll never know for sure. Doug did quit on the league after the trade; the question is whether or not his body starting to quit on him was the reason Petrie pulled the trigger to begin with.

As far as Bonzi is concerned, I think Petrie knew much more than we ever will about him. It sure looks like he made the right decision. Bonzi pre-Kings nothing but a variety of problems; Bonzi Kings acceptable behavior; Bonzi post-Kings more problems. I think there's a good chance it was another situation where there was a lot going on behind the scenes the media never caught wind of that played a major part in Petrie's decision.

I don't know how Webber came into this thread, but the worst thing about the trade(s), in my opinion is even when the two contracts are up at the end of this year, there still isn't any cap space. Sure more luxury tax space, but no chance to be a major player in any free agency. (And honestly, I don't know how strong the market will be in the off-season, and the game is starting soon so...)

It depends on whether Bibby opts out or not. If he does, the Kings will have about $13 million under teh cap. If the Kings trade Brad, SAR or Kenny for an expiring that's around $20 million. If he doesn't, there's the MLE and the LLE.

According to John Hollinger, the top 10 free agents are:

Chauncey Billups
Vince Carter
Rashard Lewis
Darko Milicic
Mike Bibby
Grant Hill
Anderson Verejao
Mo Williams
Andres Nocioni

I've been meaning to point out that Mo Taylor is a ridiculously cheap option for the Kings because the league pays a good chunk of of his salary. When veterans play for the veteran's minimum the leauge subsidizes their salary, so the Kings are paying practically nothing for him.

Here's Salary cap FAQ in it:

When a player has been in the NBA for three or more seasons, and is playing under a one-year, ten-day or rest-of-season contract, the league office actually reimburses the team for part of his salary - any amount above the minimum salary level for a two-year veteran. For example, in 2005-06 the minimum salary for a two-year veteran is $719,373, so for a ten-year veteran, with a minimum salary of $1,138,500, the league would reimburse the team $419,127. Only the two-year minimum salary is included in the team salary, not the player's full salary. They do this so teams won't shy away from signing older veterans simply because they are more expensive when filling out their last few roster spots.

Yeah, I just don't think Bibby will opt out. That is a lot of coin to leave on the table. MLE/LLE doesn't get you too far. Maybe one of the bottom three of that list for the MLE.

Darko Milicic would look good. Petrie get it done if we have the chance

Wouldn't mind a guy like Verejao either. Darko is reportedly asking to the tune of 60 million dollar contract. Way too high of a price for a guy like that.

well, the "if" part will go the other way; i don't think given the current state of the magic with an improving dwight and darko pair and they are already starting to contend for the eastern conference, they will consider parting ways with darko.

about varejao: that guy is a thug; a milder version of fortson. i would think that the kings need a hard-nosed player with somewhat of a talent. if the kings would like to acquite him despite this, i am almost certain that they would be able to. i don't think varejao deserves to be cited in the top 10 list of next year's free agents.

I think that if Petrie's not re-signing Bonzi were due to profound insights, we would have signed some good FAs instead of sitting on our hands for a month or two while Bonzi tried to squeeze a huge contract out of us. Most of the best FAs on the market signed with other teams while Geoff waited pointlessly for Bonzi. I don't think that was intentional.

I would add that "Petrie's decision" was to offer a $38 million contract. Bonzi not being here is his fault, or the agent's, not because of some grand insight on Geoff's part.
