Possible guards to sign

looking more and more like the return of Ime Udoka and Rashad McCants. I know one thing we could do alot worse than those two. Mo Evans is still out there as well.

At this point, I wouldn't mind Rashad McCants. Worst comes to worse, and I wouldn't mind Udoka ir McCants signs elsewhere. I still think we need another point though.

So, Patty Mills is really trying to stay in the NBA. I see no reason why Portland should keep him and have him rot on the bench. We might actually put him to good use and further bolster our backcourt with the Australian version of speedy gonzalez.

I was, and I'am a big fan of Mills. Unfortunately I think the signing of Jeter removes any chance of the Kings signing Mills. Both are similar players when you think about it. And at this stage of both careers, Jeter is probably the most experienced. I can't see the Kings with two 5'11" speedy points guards on their roster.

But Mills is a better shooter from long range than Pooh. OTH, Pooh is a better passer. Mills is really a SG trapped in a PG body

Jeter has apparently improved his outside shot. I know we tend to judge players off of our orginal memory of them. But players do improve with hard work. All I know is that his shot looked good in Vegas, and from what I've read, he's been shooting the ball well over in europe. Nothing against Mills. I wanted the Kings to draft him. It was not to be..

Is Jeter's contract guaranteed? If not, wouldn't hurt to just invite both to camp and let them duke it out for the spot then

Okay, a brief overview of who is still left:
Rashad McCants
Adam Morrison
Quincy Douby
Flip Murray
Allen Iverson
Damien Wilkins
Rodney Carney
Roger Mason
Tracy McGrady
Shannon Brown
Delonte West

Who gets a fat deal from that group????

The Kings need a trade... but who...

It's possible that there's someone currently under contract that a team will want to shed for salary savings as we get closer to the season.

Well that happened as predicted so he's out there. Still hard to see given the off court disaster he is, but he obviously has what would be a very useful skillset for us.

After the online reaction to "Red Flag" Cousins and Tyreke's speeding video, I can already hear the "OMGZ Jailblazers 2.0!!!" posts being typed.

When the Kings brought in Sean May, they put a "weight" clause in his contract... maybe the Kings should pick up West and put a similar, albeit different clause in his deal that speaks to his behavior off the court.

Instead of a "weight" clause, it's a "true love waits" clause!

Guard Depth

I like the idea of bringing Delonte West in and giving him a small contract with lots of safety clauses that protect the team. He is a better than average defender and (while streaky) can be quite the shooter.

Roger Mason Jr. is another guy the I think fits here well, if the $$ is small and short term. The last season and a half hasn't been great for him since George Hill has emerged as a darn fine player, but this guy can defend, is 6'5" and has had some pretty good three point shooting years. I think he would compliment Reke well without demanding a ton of touches. He is probably at his peak (I believe he's 28) but he could be a short term solution.

I like the idea of signing Mills of Weaver as prospects. I know mills is a much better shooter, but I am intrigued by weavers height and ball handling skills. I would be happy with either as a 4th or 5th guard. Again, these guys almost definitly won't be stars, more likely role players and assests for potential trades.

So, we're at:*

Udrih/Jeter
Evans/Garcia/Wright
Greene/Casspi
Landry/Thompson/Whiteside/Jackson
Dalembert/Cousins

With the Jeter signing, I don't think Sloan sticks, and I think that precludes Patty Mills unless we'd rather add a PG than swingman. Personally, I'm more intrigued by Weaver or even West. We have to get to that minimum salary line somehow anyway.

* I hope Garcia starts over Udrih, but I don't think he will, at least right off the bat.

But how much do the Kings need to pay to get to the salary minimum? Seems like it was more like 1.2 Mil if they waive Jackson... Weaver is not getting 1.2 million.

Why couldn't Weaver get 1.2 million? That's not even 150% of the minimum salary.

Minor point guys, but somebody looked up the minimum salary rules around here a few weeks back, and we don't HAVE to have total salaries equal that number. All that will happen is if we don't meet minimum salaries, we'll basically be fined the difference. So if you had $35mil in salaries, and the minimum salary limit was $40mil, they'd just fine you the extra $5mil so it would cost you the same either way.

You might as well spend the extra money on a player rather than just a fine, but you don't have to. If you come up a tad short, you just pay out the extra amoount and it doesn't hurt you.

Right, I remember hearing that too. But yeah, you might as well get a player for the money. Especially since I don't think Jeter or anyone is necessarily more of an answer than a Weaver or West. Might as well give them a look.

Now Roger Mason is off the list... signed with NYK
http://basketball.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/68542/20100805/knicks_to_sign_roger_mason/el/

And Brown is going to the Lakers... so here is the list now, it's becoming slim pickings... Kings might be better off just keeping Sloan and Jackson and hope for a trade or two during the season:

Rashad McCants
Adam Morrison
Quincy Douby
Flip Murray
Allen Iverson
Damien Wilkins
Rodney Carney
Tracy McGrady
Delonte West

It might be hard to pass up that Douby guy......

Should also be noted that here, today, we actually already have 13 guys under contract -- Darnell Jackson has not been waived. So we really don't have to do anything or pick up anyone at this point if we are satisified.

what's the time period for waiving a player after an acquisition?

According to hoopshype, we are at $38.973 million not taking into account the contracts of Wright, Jeter, Whiteside, and Darnell Jackson.

So, we are well above the minimum salary, but still need some back-up options for our front court.

Evans, Garcia, Beno, Jeter, Wright. That's not terribly imposing.

actually scratch that...

Just checked and the minimum salary is set at $43.533 for the 10-11 season.

We might actually be around 1-1.5 million under the minimum cap, so we have room for another minimum contract to put us at 14 players and hopefully some more depth at the frontcourt.

ShamSports has us at $43.4M, and he's usually right. That would put us about $100K under the minimum salary.

But really, what's the big deal about whether we're under the minimum? Obviously the cap is important because it impacts your ability to sign free agents and make trades. But the minimum? Sheesh, we'll sign somebody, fugeddaboutit.

more depth in the frontcourt? I am guessing you mean backcourt. Frontcourt deepest in league.
