Pleasantly surprised by Jimmer.

Sorry dude, but your going on my ignore list

How devastating.

I watched just about every game Fredette played in the last two year on the mtn channel, and on the BYU channel. Sorry, but you have no freaking idea what your talking about. Your arguing against the very player that at the beginning you said you were surprised by. What Italics said was fact. Do you honestly want to compare the players on BYU to Ohio St. or Kentucky. Your nothing but a troll, and I'm done with you

I am very happy for you! But I am not sure why you are upset. I am not arguing. All I have ever said is I dont think he is a PG. You may not agree but so what. What did I say that you think I dont know what I am talking about. I watched plenty of BYU games myself. I dont doubt that their bigs dropped a few passes. All I said was all their bigs shot around 50% so its not like they were horrible.

Sorry, but shooting % hardly tells the story of how good or bad the BYU bigs were. Davies was the only big man at BYU who had enough talent to shake a stick at. And if you put him on KY, NC, or UConn he would have gotten limited minutes off the bench.

I agree to a point. I think Hartsock is pretty solid and would be start on lots of teams better then BYU. Not the elite teams but plenty of others. He took 250 shots last year and hit 50%, this year he is hitting 56%. You dont make that high of a % of shots while taking that many shots unless you can play.

jayfly have you watched both preseason games? if so i can't believe you still think jimmer can't play pg, he literally finds the open man practically every single time and has shown he is clearly a very willing passer.

Yeah i have watched both games. I will admit to questioning myself a little lol. He has done so many good things. I still have concerns about his ability to handle good full court pressure (and he will see a lot of that) and how he will do when the rest of the league "gets a book on him" so to speak. But yes, he has shown a lot of things I was not sure he had.

the force is strong in this one. his instincts on offense are great, hes only played two games for us and i already feel most comfortable with the ball in his hands.

his shooting is already at such a high level, just imagine how lights out he will be once he adapts to the speed of the nba, and nba defenses. i think he can be a hybrid of jason terry and steve nash once its all said and done. i trust him with the ball more than tyreke at this point.

Just watched the reply. Wow Jimmer had a literal ankle-breaker on Steph Curry. LOL!

He kind of lost a handle on the ball, otherwise that would have been one heck of a highlight. Imagine if he pulled up for the looooong 3 right after Steph rolled his ankle. That would have made the top 10 for sure.

I've been surprised at his poise on court and how well he sees the floor. He hasn't shown to be the shoot first ball hog many thought. In fact, he seems to distribute the ball well and take the shot when it's there. He hasn't been forcing much and looks very comfortable on offense.
I think he's going to be a very good pg. in a couple of years. He looks good right now.

I was very happy with Jimmer last night. I didn't get to watch the 1st game (Living in Eastern time can do that to you). Hopefully things can work out with him.

What surprised me the most about seeing him in person was his build. He's a lot bigger in the arms and upper body than I expected.

so what would make him a PG in your eyes? Jimmer himself says hes a PG.

So? He can call himself whatever the hell he wants, it doesn't mean he's right. I'm not saying he is or isn't, but calling himself that doesn't really mean much. A 6'2 player is always going to call themselves a PG.[/QUOTE]

i am 6'2" (almost) ... and i call myself a power forward :)

You're fighting a losing battle here, man... "it's not like they were horrible." Yes... yes, they were. I've been a life-long hardcore BYU fan, TRUST ME on this one, please. The fact that Jimmer carried a Davies-less BYU team to the Sweet 16, and that he even carried them to the tournament to begin with in previous years... it says a LOT about Jimmer's ability to carry teams.

Had the ball not been knocked away, I guarantee he would have at least SHOT the 3. I've seen that move dozens of times... when Jimmer does his crossover (or sometimes a double/triple crossover) it means he is either driving or shooting.

Who's fighting? I completely agree with what you just said, except Davies and Hartsock are not horrible, they are good big men especially for their conference. Hartsock especially has stepped up his game this year.

Davies didn't come along until toward the end of Jimmer's career at BYU, however, and he was mediocre at best his freshman year... it wasn't really until Jimmer's senior year that Davies took off. And while I agree that Hartsock is a good player, I don't think he'd start on many other school's rosters... most of his points are scored off jumpers. His inside game is above average, but nothing special, he is often times way too soft on the inside.

Have to say, Jimmer's been pretty solid in these first two preseason games. I hope he REALLY works on his defense though. His offense isn't a problem. He's been hitting spot up 3's, pull up jumpers, and has managed to create for his teammates. If he trains to improve his defense, he can become a real wrecking force.

The biggest thing he needs to improve his defense is to play. People forget that the college and NBA rules are different. He played 4 year under college rules. It will take time for him to adjust to the NBA rules.

As an example, in the last game he was caught on a defensive 3 second violation under the basket. He was asking the coaches and the refs about why he got it. I still don't think he understood after the explanations. But basically, he was on one side of the court and moved to the other side as a double team then back to the same spot. The rule is if you double you have to go all the way to the player. You can't go part way then back.

If he can be on a defensive level of Bibby or Nash (not hard to do!) then he'll be fine if his offense is as good as most think it will be. He's already a better defensive player than JWill ever was...

I get the same feeling watching Jimmer in the NBA that I did with Reke. You can just tell he belongs in the league.

Totally unscientific and illogical yet I agree with you. :) He's interesting to watch. He may very well be a steal considering in the process we also ended up with Salmons. One thing I will say about our FO is that they have courage on draft day and do very well. Heck, if our two second rounders make the final roster and get ANY minutes, it either means they are pretty darn decent or the Kings aren't as good as we thought. :( I already like Thomas as a 4th guard (whatta ya want?) and not sure about Honeycutt. Might be a lot like Cisco - except cheaper!

Honeycutt is more athletic than Cisco, and in short order will be a better defender. He comes out of the UCLA system, which leans very heavily on the defensive side of the ball. Personally I'm not a big fan of Howlands, because I don't think he fully develops players. But no one can argue that most of his players come out of college playing good defense. Honeycutt is a very good passer and an underated shooter. I had him projected at the bottom half of the first round. So I think he's a steal where we drafted him. He has a very good feel for the game. He always seems to be in the right place at the right time. I think at worse, he'll be a solid rotation player off the bench, and at best, he could end up being a starter down the road.

There are always going to be physical limitations that will keep him from ever being a truly good defender. But he doesn't have to be truly good in order to contribute. He just has to get to the point where he's not an affirmative liability that opponents zero in on and attack when he comes on the floor. There's probably an inbetween class of tweener type guards he can hang with already. His challenge is going to be figuring out how to handle both the jets on one end, and the bigger two guards on the other. We've given Reke the assignment of checking the other team's best perimeter scorer which should help, but on the other hand that is also going to leave Jimmer on some larger guys sometimes.

I could care less what Jimmer calls himself. My concern is that Reke, Thornton and Salmons may never give him the ball so he won't reach his potential. I can't even imagine how we will ever know if Jimmer can play point on this team.

I don't expect much from him defensively for many of the reasons Brick just mentioned. So for Jimmer to have value, he has to score like crazy. I think he can, as soon as we learn to pass the ball on this team.
