Payroll question: Are we paying Mikki Moore?

Superman

All-Star
Hoopshype has him on our payroll this season for $2 million. I thought he contract and all options and all that junk was up after last season? No?

My understanding was when the contract was signed in 2007, it was a three-year deal with the first two years at the full mid-level exception amount and the last year as a partial payment of $2 million.

You're right. I thought last year was the third year. This year is the third year. No matter, as we'll have him completely off the books at the same time SAR and KT come off. Now if we could do something about Beno and Nocioni, we'd be sitting pretty.

................ Now if we could do something about Beno and Nocioni, we'd be sitting pretty.

But why do something about Beno and Nocioni? They are working out fine. It is only 5 games in so everyone is trying to get in sync. Beno and Noce are key pieces with all the kids and until Cisco is back and 100% they will get big time minutes.

Well, if you listen to the "experts" on this board, we shouldn't be playing ANYONE who won't be a member of the Championship team in 2023. So we should give all the minutes to Tyreke, JT, Casspi, Donte Green, and any promsing elementary school kids we can find.

Fixed. Not all the board "experts" feel that way. ;)

I don't think that, if we ever are good again within the next three years, either of them will be huge factors on the team, and together, they represent almost $50 million in salary, for average role players. I have nothing against either one of them. I applauded Beno's contract before last season (I was wrong). I just think they're overpaid, particularly for the roles they are playing/will play for the team.

[thumbsdown]Not my point of view.[/thumbsdown]

And since we waived him in Feb 2009, the Kings owed him nothing for this season.
incorrect. The Kings waived MM last year, but since no team picked him up while he was on waivers, the Kings were responsible for his entire contract last year, about $6M. Boston picked him up after waivers, so MM got his entire Kings salary plus what Boston paid him for the remainder of last year.

Since the Kings didn't pick up MM's option for this year they have to pay him the $2M that was guaranteed. But, since he signed with GW, the Kings don't have to pay him the entire $2M. But, the difference is minimal, within $1.9M to the Full $2M.

SAR's salary came off the books last year. His salary is paid by an insurance policy thru the NBA office. And, it isn't counted against the Kings Salary Cap.

Might be mistaken, but I believe it does count against the cap until his contract ends.

Edit: Nope, you're right. http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#Q53
There is one exception whereby a player can continue to receive his salary, but the salary is not included in the team's team salary. This is when a player is forced to retire for medical reasons and a league-appointed physician confirms that he is medically unfit to continue playing. There is a waiting period of one year following the injury or illness before a team can apply for this salary cap relief. If the waiting period expires mid-season (on any date prior to the last day of the regular season), then the player's entire salary for that season is removed from the team's team salary. For example, in March 2003 the Knicks were allowed to remove Luc Longley's entire 2002-03 salary from their books (and since the luxury tax is based on the team salary as of the last day of the regular season, the Knicks avoided paying any tax on Longley's salary). This provision can also be used when a player dies while under contract.

That's what I was saying. We paid him for most of last year. It was this year the person was asking about and the Kings owed MM nothing this year. So why do we owe him anything this year? He was only guranteed this year if he was still on our roster as of 07/01/09 and he wasn't. He was on the CEltics roster as of that date.

Well, I won't speak for any "experts," but I said two years ago that Petrie should get rid of every single player on this team over the age of twenty-five, until further notice. I will add two years to adjust for the ages of the players that were twenty-five at the time I made that statement but, otherwise, I stand by it one hundred percent, with the following modification:

I want to see everybody above the age of twenty-seven off the team next year, with the possible exception of Garcia.

Substituting Salmons in my original statement with Garcia.

And my opinion on Greene is the same as it has always been: ****, or get off the pot. I really don't give a **** whether he's the star in-waiting that some people think he is, or the scrub that other people think he is, it's unforgiveable, in my opinion, to sit a twenty year-old on a lottery team in favor of a thirty-something journeyman. Play him, trade him, or cut him.

We may need to define working out fine here, but the deeper problem is of course the contracts. If they both had ending contract themselves they'd be totally expendable but there'd be no push to move them. But they both have stupid long deals at considerably more $$ than their value on the court. Adn especially gong into an offseason where every team in the league is trying to accumulate every extra dollar of capspace they can for agreta bidding war, having ours wasted on players of the caliber of Noc and Beno is galling.

The experts are right.

That's why we're experts. :D

P.S. You forgot about Hawes.

No, we owe him 2 mil. He wasn't on the Kings Roster. It was 6 mil if he was on the Kings roster.

He was getting 2 mil this year no matter what.

Absolutely dead right on. We owe him 2 mil for this year. It was a team option on his last year. Hey, its better to be stuck with the 2 mil than with him and 6 mil..

Like kennadog, that's the part I'm confused by. If it was a team option, and we simply did not pick up the option, why would anything be owed? Where does this 2 mil come from? Was the option that, "hey, if we don't pick up your options, we'll give you 2 mil anyway?"

Sorry for being confused. A partially guaranteed amount for the 3rd year does sound right to me now. I blame it on the distraction of real work. :o

yes. It just adds the guaranteed money a player gets when signing.

I know its a little confusing, but to put it simply, Moore was guaranteed his full salary for three years. The Kings wanted a team option for the fourth year. Apparently Moore wanted something guaranteed for the fourth year and they compromised on the Kings paying him 2 mil in the fourth year if they didn't pick up his option for the full year.

I hope that clarifies it for you. It was one of the more unusual deals..:)
