Kingsgurl said:They face people like this on a regular basis on the road, true. But you EXPECT that from opposing fans, having your OWN fans turn on you is a whole different ball game

For the record, Webber WAS hurt when he was booed by fans at Arco. It was pretty well documented and discussed at the time. Arco has ALWAYS been known for supporting the team. The people who booed AND especially those few who still boo to this day are an embarrassment to the rest of us.
There are ways to discuss your team and its shortcomings without resorting to player bashing, name-calling, etc.
bozzwell said:It's very simple. Boo or not, Webber and Pedja and Cat or whomever else is next to be called out are still great players and they must know that. It may hurt them that some of us are down on them right now, but...
Our standards have been raised so high that any player on this team _should_ get butterflies in their stomach every night. So, it is part and parcel of bieng a Kings player. I am sure they are cool with that part.
Our standards have been raised because they have been great team and great players for so long.

gangdogu said:What is really embarassing right now is that ARCO isn't the loudest arenas around the league anymore. Man, I got to watch a couple of games played ARCO ; I thought in first place my TV Set speakers were broken. Then I checked and realized that my speakers were fine, the ARCO crowd was quiet. How strange is that?
It seems that the crowd only gets into the game when it's a close one or whenever Kings are being blown out. Sounds like the old Kingfan spirit has vanished, sounds like the ARCO crowd turned into a bunch of VIPs like those in the luxury box. Don't get me wrong, we've great people on this board like VF and I know whenever she goes to ARCO goes out loud but still it doesn't cover the whole place.
I think throughout the years we've got used to the fact that the team was one of the top squad in the league. I remember, back in the days when Webb, Vlade and J Will arrived in town. The ARCO crowd was something different at that time.

Bricklayer said:Of course we mean a lot to them. Its no different than popularity for anybody else -- if eveybody is bagging on you, whispering behind your back etc. its got to be an incredibly uncomfortable feeling. And as public figures, not as if they can just take their money and run off to a desert island somewhere to avoid the humiliation. Human beings, remember? Working on the same emotions and same motivations as all of us do.
jeffjcalweb said:i don't think that's quite true when talking about professional athletes... most of these guys have been the center of their world since they were teenagers, by now they have a pretty thick skin and a very different way of looking at the world than you or i do. of course they would rather be cheered than booed, but do you think webber stayed up late night when he was booed at arco? or maybe he did and you were there to prove (jk ... jk!)
seriously, pro athletes, especially ones in the public as much as NBA players, just have a different reality & what would make you or me upset just isn't the same for them.
Bricklayer said:Actually I think you have that entirely backward -- having been worshipped for such a large percentage fo their life, I'm willing to bet they feel the jabs every bit as much as we do, perhaps more. Some get jaded, and of course ironically the same fans who made them jaded then pile on them for becoming so, but some do not. And in Webber's case he was clearly hurt.
I think its closer to the truth that fans make up the excuse that players don't feel so they can justify their insensitivity to themselves. "Oh, yeah I'm being an *******, but its ok, he's not human, he's just a player." Fans like being *******s -- sports give them an outlet to let out their inner jerk in a way most hopefully would never do in the rest of their life.
