Upset Alert: Safarova and Strycova (CZE) defeat Venus and Serena Williams in the first round in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. It is the first time the Williams sisters have lost in their Olympic doubles career.
In what would have to be classified as a mild upset, Gabby Douglas (USA) will not get a chance to defend her all-around gold medal. Despite the United States having the top three all-around scores in the qualifying stage, each country is only allowed a maximum of two competitors for the all-around, and Douglas finished third, behind teammates Simone Biles and Aly Raisman.
Douglas will still compete with the rest of the heavily-favored United States team, as they attempt to defend their team gold, as well as individually on the uneven bars, along with event specialist Madison Kocian.
