Medal Alert: Helen Maroulis (USA) defeats Saori Yoshida (JPN) to win the gold medal in the women's wrestling (-53kg).

Interesting tidbit: I mentioned on the last page that Japan's Kaori Icho won her fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal at -58kg. Icho is the #1 ranked wrestler in the world at -58kg. Maroulis is the #1 ranked wrestler in the world at -55kg... But there isn't a -55kg weight class at the Olympics. So, Maroulis was given the option to go up in weight, and risk having to run into Icho, or go down in weight, and run into Yoshida, who was also going for her fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal!

Man, the Japanese have this sport on lock!

Medal Alert: USA defeats ITA 12-5, to win the gold medal in women's water polo.

USA had many favored women's athletes/teams go down (Serena, soccer, indoor volleyball, Walsh-Jennings/Ross). About time somebody lived up to expectations.

I'm a huge Carmelo Anthony fan after these games. Might be my new favorite active player in the league right now. Blown away with his post game interview. Class act.

Way to go Team USA!

So, when it's all told, it appears as though Brazil has tied for the third-worst showing by a host nation in the history of the modern Olympics, at least, in terms of the Summer Games. One of only four host nations ever to finish outside of the Top 10 in medal count.

Brazil won most gold metals and overall metals in their Olympics history - 19/7. Ending up 13th in these games, they were second in all of western hemisphere behind only USA. All in all impressive performance by the Brazilians, who captured gold in nations two top sports, men's soccer and men's indoor volleyball. With all the ragging leading up to Rio 2016 that they were not ready, they were, that infrastructure was horrible, it wasn't, that everyday choked traffic would cause event delay, it didn't, that Zika mosquito virus would unleash horror, it didn't, that crime and violence would rage, it didn't (despite ugly American Ryan Lochte) and finally no one would watch the anointed miserable failure - yet millions and millions worldwide tuned in, enjoyed thoroughly these summer Olympic games.
