Offseason Plan

nbrans

All-Star
Draft: best PF/C available (let's say Jianlian)

Keep in mind that the only way to clear salary for free agency this offseason is by trading with teams with cap room.

Trade #1:
Kings outgoing:
Ron Artest
Kings incoming:
Jose Calderon

Clippers outgoing:
Corey Maggette
Clippers incoming:
Ron Artest

Raptors outgoing:
Jose Calderon
Raptors incoming:
Corey Maggette

Kings get their point guard of the future in Calderon, who has had a terrific year, and clear some cap space in the process. The Clippers get Artest. The Raptors give up their backup point guard for the small forward they need to fill out a really tough starting five.

Also, I know the salaries don't match on this trade, but I'm pretty sure it would work because the end result would be both the Kings and Raptors being under the cap, and the Clippers match salaries.

Trade #2:
Kings outgoing:
Mike Bibby
Kings incoming:
Tyronn Lue

Atlanta outgoing:
Tyronn Lue
Atlanta incoming:
Mike Bibby

The Kings clear more cap space with this lopsided trade, and the Hawks finally get a good point guard. The Kings are now about $15 million under the cap.

Free agency #1:
Sign Gerald Wallace starting around $7-8 million a year

Free agency #2:
Sign Justin Williams around $1.5 mil a year

Free agency #3:
Sign Ronnie Price around $1.5 mil a year

Try to go after another big with the remaining money.

Sign draft pick. Also, try and trade Thomas and Miller for expirings. Extend Martin.

New Kings:
PG: Calderon, Price, Douby, Lue
SG: Martin, Douby
SF: Wallace, Salmons, Garcia
PF: Jianlian, Williams, SAR, KT
C: Miller, Williams, SAR

Not all the way there yet, but a Calderon/Martin/Wallace/Jianlian nucleus would be young, athletic and pretty fun to watch.

SAR and Garcia are the only leaders remaining on this team, that core is extremely young and potentially (very) entertaining, but they need either a savage rising star (like Bosh in Toronto) or a coaching genius to give them direction and identity.

That is not to say that Wallace or Jianlin can't develop into championship caliber leaders. Heck, one of them has to have a real mean streak in them. (Homework for everyone who hasn't done so: WATCH TAPE OF JIANLIN, HE'S FREAKING AMAZING!)

Anyway, great lineup, but that team's coach better be highly experienced and us fans better learn to be patient.

I really like Calderon, I don't know if the clips want Artest though. Sterling really wants to keep maggette for some reason so I don't know. If we're going to give up both artest and bibby i'd like another first back. Other than that, good ideas.

I don't like Jianlian much. He is unproven and he got outplayed by Wang Zhizhi IIRC for the Chinese Basketball Championship something like that. Sure he has height but he is extremely skinny and what skills does he have?

Uh..what skills does he have?

What skills does he NOT have is the bigger question.

Skills are not the question with a player like Jianlin. He can shoot, pass, dribble, fly up and down the court. The questions with him are the intensity/physicality/defense type stuff, not skills. Watch the vids of the kid, very much in a Gasol/Dirk/KG type mode of ultra-mobile, and yes, skilled bigs. Doesn't mean he will be as good, but worrying about Jianlin's skills as a big is kid of like worrying about Oden's defense -- its the calling card. The questions lie elsewhere.

My big concern about Jianlian is that if he's really 19. nbadraft.net seems to be convinced he was really born in '84.

He may end up being very good, but many (myself included) will remain skeptical until he gets here. Outplayed by Wang ZhiZhi? Uhhh. Hey, I look like Larry Bird when I play 6th graders. That's all I'm saying.

Last year Raef LaFrentz put up 30 points on Yao Ming and shut him down on the other end. I suppose Yao is garbage because during one game, he got schooled by Raef freaking LaFrentz.

People have bad games. He's shown enough flashes to get a pass for one bad game.

I didn't even see the game, I was sort of reacting. I have seen clips, and my main point was that he's not exactly playing top competition.

I think Yi is more akin to a 3 in a 5's body, so the nearest comparison would be Nowitzki. I thought the dude was a small forward when I first watched him play.

I think we should hire Karl Malone or Clyde the Glide as a big man's coach and let him work with those youngsters:D That needs to be added to the plan, man.

2nd worst trade in Sacramento Kings history.

On its face, yes, but in my scenario it's essentially Mike Bibby for Gerald Wallace and Tyronn Lue (the Bibby for Lue trade to free up cap space), and I don't think that's so bad.

The team we are left with is worse then the Charlotte team Gerald is currently on. Also, what reason would Wallace have to come to the Kings. He was basically released once.

Further, cap space is not important enough to simply throw away talent, IMO.

I don't see why Wallace would have any ill feelings toward the Kings -- they drafted him, giving him his shot, and then essentially gave him the opportunity to go to another team where he could get more playing time.

It's a great idea if you can get the pacers pick from them.

I would play YJL at SF, and spend Gerald's money a bruiser down low, if possible. Or just save the cash until next year. Otherwise, it's not bad. I wouldn't do back flips or anything, run and gun teams aren't my particular flavor, but that's a solid core.

Just FYI, when Chris Bosh was a rookie, he got schooled by Wang Zhizhi in much worse fashion than Yi. I still remember that game, it was like Dirk Nowitzki against a 5th grader.

With that said, Yi is still a big question mark. He has two post moves, no left hand and a decent jump shot. He'll never be a post player, but he could turn into a Channing Frye with slashing skill. How does it translate in the NBA, I'm not quite sure.

Also, I have no idea why Wang ZhiZhi never panned out in the NBA. Teams can't use a 7'0" guy who can shoot the three? Really? Couldn't he have been another Memo Okur? Was it the language thing?

Probably a lack of ability to do anything else.
