Voisin does say something a bit contradictory in this article -- on the one hand, she says that we will not pursue McCants, but on the other hand she says Petrie will not comment on whether he will pursue Diogu until the official free agent list is released. She reports the McCants portion as fact, not speculation, but Petrie obviously wouldn't comment on McCants if he won't comment on Diogu...

Other than the fact that Diogu and McCants opted out, there is no story here. Just pure speculation on the part of Voisin. Its the beginning of free agency, so I suspose she thought she had to write something. Which she did, and it turned out to be nothing.

This is the idea I've had for some time:

don't extend the 4 mil offer for Diogu. Let him become a UFA, then pursue him with a reasonable offer around 2mil and let him know he will be a key reserve.

I certainly don't.....we still have his Bird rights so let him shop around. If he gets a good deal then good for him but if he is lowballed by everyone maybe we can get him back on the cheap. Right now I believe we have about 46 million dedicated to salaries for next year so we do have some cap space to play with. I think

I think with a lot of free agents out there and not a lot of available cash for them anywhere in the league, the Kings made the right move. They can pursue better players in the same position and if that does not pan out, they can always sign Diogu (or similar player) on the cheap.

I agree, though, why pay $4Mil for Ike when you can probably get away with $2Mil? If someone wants to pay Ike $4Mil, let them.

That doesn't mean Ike's a gonner. As said, it just means they can sign him to a smaller contract, which I predict will be loaded with incentives.

I think they would be the best situation for him as well. You can't start promising minutes in a contract. It opens up a can of worms for the coach and would breed friction amongst the players.

I'd be surprised if anyone gives Diogu 4 million dollars to play for them next year. I'd like to see him re-signed, but not if it means overpaying. You almost always have to overpay to keep proven big men in the league, but hopefully Diogu is still unproven enough that nobody else wants him. I doubt Petrie said anything about McCants, but he doesn't have to. The Tyreke Evans pick speaks for him.

Considering the many swingmen the kings have, I see no point in signing Shard. Garcia can play SG, and Donte & Noc can play the 3/4, and I would rather use whatever minutes that Shard might get on Casspi and Donte instead.

Really? Wow. Charlie is no better IMO, but it doesn't matter since he just signed with the Pistons.

It seems that Diogu would be best utilized with the occasional opponent mismatch games, where he can go off for 20+ points and 10+ rebounds like he did at the end of the season.

McCants's game is commonplace, and while he played well for us in the short time he was here I'm pretty sure that in combination with some of his temper problems may have played a role in this decision. We could afford another SG, but I guess that shows that we really like Evans and are willing to give him many minutes right away. I'm not sure McCants will get much interest beyond a $2-2.5 million deal in the open market though.

As for Diogu, he could be a potential bargain bin player for any team in the league. Again everyone's going to overlook him because he has serious physical deficiencies in height and athleticism, and he hasn't played in enough games either, but if we don't want him some other team might.
