No more rookies vs sophmores - new format

Section 101

All-Star

NBA All-Star 2012 will play host to the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge, which will introduce an exciting new format to a game that has historically featured NBA rookies facing off against sophomores. For the first time, rookies and sophomores will be mixed together on teams. ...

TNT Analysts Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal will serve as the general managers of two opposing teams, each with nine man rosters, consisting of NBA rookies and sophomores drafted from a pool that was previously selected by the NBA’s assistant coaches. ...

The pool of players will be announced on Feb. 8, followed by the live BBVA Rising Stars Challenge Draft on Thursday evening, Feb. 16. Fellow TNT Analysts Mike Fratello and Steve Kerr will be part of the coaching staffs for the teams, with Fratello joining TEAM CHUCK and Kerr joining TEAM SHAQ. The Head Coaches for both teams will be the lead assistant coaches from the 2012 NBA All-Star Game coaching staffs.

I'd say Jimmer is more likely to get in based on this system. Which may give it a little more excitement and fun. Cousins should certainly go number one but guys like Wall are more likely to go first given the up and down nature of the game!

Probably because the format of this exhibition games would suit Jimmer very well, Wide open threes.

+ he wouldn't have to worry about defending anyone.

It appears that it's the league's assistant coaches who are choosing the pool of 18 players (I would guess 9 from each class, but that wasn't specified) and that Barkley and Shaq are only "drafting" from that pool. Who is in the pool is actually an interesting question. Throwing out some guesses:

Sophomores:
Cousins (C)
Wall (PG)
Monroe (C)
George (SG/SF)
Fields (SG/SF)
Hayward (SG/SF)
Turner (SG/SF)
Favors (PF)
Jerebko (SF/PF) (may not be eligible - it's his third season but he missed the entirety of his second

And the last slot could go Wes Johnson/Splitter/Vasquez/Pekovic/Ed Davis/Jordan Crawford...I don't see an easy call there. Griffin of course will be in the big show.

Rookies:
Irving (PG)
Rubio (PG)
Knight (PG)
Walker (PG)
Leonard (SF)
Brooks (SG - if he's back from injury)
Derrick Williams (PF)
Shumpert (PG)

Again, that probably leaves one spot for IT/Jimmer/Parsons/Cole/Klay Thompson, and I suppose it's anybody's guess.

But looking at those lineups, I can see why the NBA changed the format. The balance of those two teams was shaping up to be terribly off.

Edit: Didn't point out that the change in format drastically increases the chances that either Jimmer or IT will make the game. With potentially 5 PGs in front of them, there would be no chance for either to make it as a sixth PG. With the teams being drafted form the pool, each team gets 3-4 PGs and will end up with some 2-PG backcourts at times, but no biggie.

Shouls result in an exhibiton showdown betwen Cousins and Monroe, the two best bigs of the last couple of years, and the two guys we were considering with our pick last year (also apparently one fo the points Petrie and Vevein differed on precipitating the slimy ex-agent's departure).

Actually, it might not, depending on whether the "draft" snakes. Here's my thinking.

TeamA: I take Cousins.
TeamB: I take Irving.
TeamA: I take Monroe. I have all the centers.
TeamB: Crap. I take Rubio.
TeamA: I take Wall.
TeamB: Unfair! You should not be able to get both the centers AND a top PG! I'm going to get slaughtered if I don't take Favors.
TeamA: I take Paul George.
TeamB: I give up.

You take Cousins I take Monroe. Be very simple for me. You take Irving, I take Wall. With only two bigs of note in the game hard to see how each side does not end up with one, especialy with the two tubs of lard doing the picking. Not that any of this matters in the least. Suppose I'll watch the game just for DeMarcus.

Yes, but that's you and I. We're talking about Barkley and Shaq here. Strategy and logic do not necessarily apply.

Yes but both guys LOVE bigmen so chances are they go for one first up especially in what will be a guard heavy pool! If Shaq picks first, he gets Cousins no doubt!

Off topic, but shaq is a horrible analyst, just terrible.

I think he's out there to add more entertainment value than serious basketball analysis. And it's hard to argue that he doesn't bring some comedy and humor, but maybe that's just me.

And gee, isn't that shocking.

They actually have done the thing you are not supposed to do, and after a decade I now no longer watch their halftimes or postgames.

yeah from the times i've seen shaq on tnt or nba tv commenting on kings highlights, he seems to really like cousins. the only thing he wishes cousins did more is play above the rim...which is something i also wish

Now that Blake is in the pool, I am thinking Shaq might go for Blake if he is picking first.

For those like me who are too lazy to look up the list but want to see who's available, I stopped being lazy for a sec:

Sophomores
Blake Griffin
Landry Fields
DeMarcus Cousins
Paul George
Gordon Hayward
Greg Monroe
Tiago Splitter
Evan Turner
John Wall

Rookies
Kyrie Irving
Ricky Rubio
MarShon Brooks
Brandon Knight
Kawhi Leonard
Markieff Morris
Tristan Thompson
Kemba Walker
Derrick Williams

I think Blake will end up getting voted into the big game, so wouldn't that mean he'd be replaced for this game?

The teams:

TEAM SHAQ:
Blake Griffin – Los Angeles Clippers (Sophomore)

Jeremy Lin – New York Knicks (Sophomore)
Ricky Rubio – Minnesota Timberwolves (Rookie)
Greg Monroe – Detroit Pistons (Sophomore)
Markieff Morris – Phoenix Suns (Rookie)
Kemba Walker – Charlotte Bobcats (Rookie)
Landry Fields – New York Knicks (Sophomore)
Norris Cole – Miami Heat (Rookie)
Brandon Knight – Detroit Pistons (Rookie)
Tristan Thompson – Cleveland Cavaliers (Rookie)

TEAM CHUCK
Kyrie Irving – Cleveland Cavaliers (Rookie)
DeMarcus Cousins – Sacramento Kings (Sophomore)
Paul George – Indiana Pacers (Sophomore)
Derrick Williams – Minnesota Timberwolves (Rookie)
MarShon Brooks – New Jersey Nets (Rookie)
John Wall – Washington Wizards (Sophomore)
Gordon Hayward – Utah Jazz (Sophomore)
Tiago Splitter – San Antonio Spurs (Sophomore)
Kawhi Leonard – San Antonio Spurs (Rookie)
Evan Turner – Philadelphia 76ers (Sophomore)

DeMarcus was the 4th overall pick, for those out there keeping score. And yes, they took a shot at him during the process.
