No FA action until after Vegas Summer League????

According to Jason Jones interview with GP Saturday morning (see his blog link below) the Kings don't expect to make any FA moves until maybe end of summer league which for them is Sunday July 18th. That's a big AARRRRGGGGHHH! (But then again, maybe not)

I'm fine with this, too. I don't know of any FA who I'm sure would be a cost-effective addition to the team right now.

The team needs more talent to be in the playoff race, but the money being thrown around this summer can come back to haunt many teams due to the uncertainty of the next CBA. It is wiser to not make a big splash when you don't have a chance at the star players and would be screwed over in a couple years by bringing in an overpaid role player that doesn't address many needs. Next FA period, I expect the Kings to be players as having the cap space and the allure of a potential playoff team. Right now, the Kings are still a lottery team with questionable character.

I can't say that I'm surprised by this. I figured most of the 2nd tier players wouldn't be signed til LaBron and company made their decisions. So let the Summer League games begin.

What this most likely means is that Petrie will most likely be looking to sign a young summer league type of player, whether they play on our team or another teams.

spot on ole chap. My thoughts exactly. In fact I'd be willing to bet at least one of the FA signings will be a rookie or someone thats been playing overseas or D-league.

I'm not too worried about waiting. Summer league is a great place to see a lot of undrafted freeagents. I know I plan on going to a lot of games, and not just the Kings games. You also have the D league team playing there. So I agree. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Kings pick up someone from summer league, and not necessarily from our own team.

wonder if there are any quality big guards in europe that can shoot and defend? Preferably with some experience. I'd rather do that than get into this free agency frenzy

I think this is great news. We just need some injury insurance at guard, otherwise we're loaded with guys that may not be the final solutions at their spots but that we have invested heavily in and need PT and evaluation. No sense trying to compete against all the big spenders, whether it is a summer league guy or a vet who got shut out of the spending spree we are better off waiting until all the major dust has settled rather than trying to grab early July headlines.

Wes Matthews was on the Kings Summer League team last summer. The Jazz picked him up and he played pretty well. He is 6 ' 5" 220 or so, plays defense, his steals are 1.5+ and he averaged around .380 on the 3 for the season shooting more than 100 shots. He is a restricted free agent this year and is going to get a nice contract for an undrafted player who was signed off the Summer League roster.

I would like to see the Kings make him an offer. If that does not work out then GP and staff need to find another guard like Wes:)

Or maybe we should look for this years version of Mathews. Might be cheaper...

This continues to be a fantastic off-season as this is the best news I could have heard. Names have been bandied about on this site (Miller, Morrow, Reddick, Bell, ect.), and though I wouldn't be adamantly opposed to signing one of them, I think our best bet is to keep things cheap this off-season. I would have no problems with Petrie targetting young, hungry players he sees in Summer League to shore up the fringe of our roster. I think going in that direction, especially with the new CBA looming makes all the sense in the world.
I do hope that we're able to re-sign Brockman, though I almost hope it will be after Summer League, so that there is less competition for minutes for Whiteside. I know what Cousins is going to be able to do, but I'm really intrigued to see how Hassan will handle himself out there, and want to see him get as many minutes as possible. I only managed to see Marshall play once last year, and that was against Tulsa, so it's going to be fun to watch this new King get some playing time.

I have no problem with this...I still wouldn't mind picking up Raja Bell, hope he's still available after Vegas.

There were rumors of the Lakers getting him but that's not happening anymore now that they signed Blake. Would love to have Raja Bell for 1 year.

I would not. Raja Bell is old and slow. He was in the NBA when Allen Iverson made the finals. He's no better to us than Udoka at this point (who I would like to resign).

I don't want to expose this young team to the business of the NBA yet (signing random guys, not resigning players, trading your guys, signing players that will take minutes away from the core we have now). I think you gotta give them a chance to mesh and grow together.

Raja may be older(34 yrs), but he's still lightyears ahead of Udoka skill-wise...especially shooting, Raja still can shoot the lights out. He has experience and maturity, and a great 3pt shot that would help out this team way more than Ime.

I think this might be GP's trump card as I'm sure he will attend the Worlds in Turkey beginning end of August.

Problem is that you would have to pay them to get them to come over, almost surely with a multiple year guaranteed contract which we've apparently been loathe to hand out even to established NBAers.
