NFL 2023-2024 Thread

Yeah, I agree. I said pretty much the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Top tier defensive coordinators are generally pretty hard to come by and we've lost two of them in the last three years to the NFL head coaching carousel. Not every replacement is going to be a good fit.

But that's also why picking up yet another edge rusher without changing the scheme seems like a waste of time to me. At least if Lynch had gotten another elite CB there's a chance this scheme might have worked better with tighter coverage on the WR's or if he'd filled the hole at LB vacated by Al-Shaair to shore up the middle of the field and eliminate some of the quick check-down throws and almost sacks. Doubling down on what's already not working while allowing the overmatched secondary and O-Line to continue getting pushed around doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. I'll give this a chance though. Maybe with the bye week more guys will get healthy and the team will play with better energy and finish their tackles.
A waste of time is a bit harsh on the trade probably, but yes I would say a 'red herring' to the real problem. I do like the move to get Chase Young, but they failed to make the address the problem. Corner doesn't have to be elite just good/solid - B/B+ vice C-/C - -> like around Ward's level (B+)

Everytime i bring up our lack of O-line on the 49er sites i would always get lectured about how hard it is to address. Well, we are a good team so all our draft picks are late, after all the good o-line guys are gone. Or teams never part with their good o-line guys, cause they are so hard to come by in the first place. Or maybe the 49ers just choose to skimp on that part of the team. The Jaguars just gave up a DAY 3 draft pick for Ezra Cleveland. A DAY 3 PICK. Ezra Cleveland is a beast. He performed well with Minnesota and was only available because Kirk Cousins went down with a season ending injury. The vikings will be looking to rebuild after this season. He would have addressed a huge need for the 49ers. But no, we grab ANOTHER DE. The 49ers just choose to go budget on their offensive line. There is no other explanation.
Yes Offensive line is #2 behind DB....also needed. Like I said teh Boild, it was a good pickup, and don't fault the pickup - they needed to throw more skin in the game for a better CB.....and to think they could've moved up for Surtain in the draft for less.

Chase Young is a good player but he's also a free agent at the end of this season. He may just be a short-term rental for a team which has bigger issues at other positions. If the team bounces back and makes another run at a Super Bowl this year and/or Young excels and gets re-signed to a long term contract than I'm probably wrong in my assessment. Right now though I just see a short-term move that won't be enough to course correct. I'm also factoring into this that Trent Williams is probably the Niners best player and he's in his 13th season. It's not like the Offensive Tackle problem is coming out of nowhere. I don't see how Shanahan and Lynch can say "Purdy is our guy, we go where he goes" and then fail to get him adequate protection.

I demand apologies from everyone telling me how wrong I was about him for the past 4 years.
Never!

A SB and championship game appearance means he did something right. Same team with lesser QBs like Mullens/Beathard/Hoyer and the Niners were like 3-13. Throw in a healthy Jimmy G and they were superbowl contenders. He had his warts but you can't really be cashing in receipts on a guy who went as far as he did in the playoffs.

Him failing under McDaniels was as obvious as it gets. Adams is not the type of receiver that shines with Jimmy G under center. They should have been copying exactly what Shanahan did to make him successful.

Calling the teams that Beathard and Mullens had the same team as the one Jim had is a bit inauthentic. 17/18 was the rebuild from the dark ages, 20 was snake bitten with the injuries. Is Jim better than Beathard and Mullens? Sure, but that’s not a high bar to clear. A healthy full strength team isn’t 3-14 under them.

“A top-3 wide receiver in football isn’t the type of guy for Jim” is just silly.

I refuse to back down from it. They always won in spite of this dude. There’s a reason Shanahan took the ball out of his hands as much as humanly possible in the playoffs.

For Jimmy a solid tight end is much more valuable than an elite deep threat. Dude can't throw long so it's just not a good pair. Even I saw that going into the season. Knew he wasn't going to be able to utilize Adams. He needs YAC threats and possession receivers in order to be successful.

We'll never know for certain but I refuse to believe those 4-12 and 6-10 seasons wouldn't have been playoff seasons if he was healthy and everything else stayed the same. At worst one would have been a .500 season and the other a playoff berth.

Moot point because it's not like they didn't try and replace him anyway. It just took a while before they could find anyone that was better.

No, lol. Jimmy G now is not the same qb he was as a early 49er. He probably shows regression last year too if we were a worse team like the Raiders, but it's silly to say 2019 Jimmy G is the same skill/talent as 2023 Jimmy G
Post-ACL was always the exact same Jimmy. Always terrible, always won in spite of him / because of the talent around him. 2019 Jim on this Raiders is just as terrible.

That was a crazy game. Dem Boys did get some bad calls I thought and the Eagles nearly gave it away with a bunch of penalties at the end but the defensive line came through when it mattered again.

Yeah, the surprising penalties on that last drive almost cost you (I say surprising only because the Eagles defense, historically, has been pretty disciplined).

GOD, I HATE MIKE MCCARTHY

Well, at least we know that the Raiders CAN actually play the game of football. Sunday night against the Jets in a week is gonna be wild. Barring an unfortunate, and unforeseen, circumstances, that will be my first in-person game of the season.

20 year old rookie QB leads Texans over Buccaneers, amazing 39-37 last second victory. CJ Stroud 470 yards, 5 TDs, no INT, 147.8 passer rating.

Since this years NFL season kicked off I've been watching Redzone for the first time more than entire Sunday game action on live TV. My eye test tells me so far the so-called top QBs in the league have mostly been underwhelming. Patrick Mahomes is great but this season having by his standards relatively mediocre stats. Same with Josh Allen, underwhelming so far after 9 games on the schedule. But does not stop there, Justin Herbert mediocre by his standards, Dak Prescott average, Trevor Lawrence average, and of course Aaron Rodgers going down in week one big blow for the all-time great. So who does my eye test say very special this season and surprisingly quite small list. I can brag about only 2 QBs after 9 games: Joe Burrow #1A and #1B CJ Stroud. Honorable mention to Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, Russell Wilson, Jared Goff. Brock Purdy, Derek Carr, not really. But lot of games left so maybe they and some others can move up into truly "special" category.
